  1. That really is a fantastic analysis. I love this score dearly and some of the information, particullary about how the film came to be, was new to me and was very enlightening. The Blue Fairy theme, for me, is what made this score extra special. I just thought it was so fresh, in melodic terms, when I first heard it, and I still do. So beautiful. I wish that the theme was used more, just so I could hear more variations of it with different orchestrations. However I do believe it was used just the right amount for the film, that's just the John Williams fan in me talking
  2. With such a big budget, I'm hoping they're spending more money on real sets and animatronics rather than the whole film being CGI, as most movies are these days
  3. Oh my goodness.... so we could have another incredible battle sequence on our hands? Exciting I'm also intrested to hear from Jackson and the writing team about the whole 'tomb' thing, it's very strange.
  4. Does anyone know what 'extra bits' could have been added to the film? I've read a lot about the the White Council being in it, but will they just talk, or is it possible we see them in battle? Obviously I know no one's seen the film, but I take it the filmakers have added to the film thing's that Tolkien wrote outsde the hobbit story. So what does Gandalf actually do when he leaves Bilbo?

The only time I've ever heard a piece of classical music that has shoked me in similarity to John Williams is at 1.14 of this video; Even then I don't care because it totally fits with the rest of the track and it's awsome. The fact is the score that gets the most heat for 'plagiarism' is star wars and we all know that Lucas was pretty set on having something extremely close to the temp tracks. Like the Home Alone example, clearly meant to have a similarity. Most of the rest of the time it's just simmiliar orchestrations which in my opinion, only shows how incredible John Williams is. All the other 'rip-offs' in the video I posted above sound much worse than the original whilst John Williams sounds at the same level or, dare I say, sometimes better

  9. I may be going mad, but I genuinly think this video is crazy! I mean the guy seems pretty convinced, but I just don't hear it at all. What do you guys think lol?
  10. John Williams wasn't ousted. He would have scored Goblet of Fire, but he was far too busy. Keep in mind that it was 2005 at the time. He had Memoirs of a Geisha, Munich, War of the Worlds and Revenge of the Sith...there was no way he could have handled the Potter film on top of that, so he decided to drop the project. Since then, his schedules never really opened up to cooperate for the followinf films... I don't think that could have been the only reason, I mean the next film was 2007, what was John doing then? Just concert writing I suppose. And the next was 2009, he only had Tintin then. Of course War Horse got in the way for the last one but I'm sure if they really cared about getting him back they would have got him. Didin't I read somewhere that David Yates wouldn't show John a rough cut of the film for a really silly reason? Something like pride or whatever. I completely agree. It would have been a wonderful moment. And I wish they kept on one of Voldemort's themes. I think the more subtle one, rather than the 7 note repeated theme, would have worked so well in the 'darker' later films. The theme that's played in the brass at 1.25 in 'The Face Of Voldemort'. And who knows, John Williams would have probably developed one of themes into something simmiliar but more fitting for the other films. And yes I want them re-scored. It should happen.
  11. No there are other clips where you see him recording the present cue and it is a small ensemble. You it very clearly at 3.53. Also the 'The Adventures of Tintin' does not include any string instruments, apart from a double bass performing the 'walking bass'. In the clips with the full orchestra you can see the cellos playing on one side and you can see in the reflection on the grand piano that the violins are playing as well. We can't see woodwind or brass, they are out of sight but we can presume they will be playing since they wouldn't set the orchestra up like that if they didin't. As I said it can't be the present cue because the cellos, violins etc do not play in it. That's why it's so exciting, who knows what other kind of thing John Williams could have written ? There are strings in "The Adventures of Tintin". I've studied the score. The cello section accompanies the "walking bass line" when the orchestration gets more dense further on. And the violins and violas play very briefly about halfway through. The version he did with the small jazz band was probably an earlier version of the final, more fully orchestrated cue. The sheet is marked as "Tinker-Tin" REVISED. The instrumentation is 6 Saxophones (3 alto, 3 baritone) 1 Clarinet 2 Bass Clarinets 3 Horns 1 Trumpet (con sordino) 2 trombones tuba Percussion (drum kit/chimes) Accordion Synthesizer Piano Harpsichord 1st and 2nd Violins Violas Celli and 1 solo bass. Mods, if this is sensitive information, feel free to delete my post. I stand completely corrected- silly me. I've always been quite good at picking out instruments that are playing in pieces, but I suppose John usually does use a very big ensemble. I really can't hear the strings at all, not violin or cello. And I never noticed a tuba either. Well then it is most likely just the recording of the present cue.....

  13. It's a shame you can't see more of what the orchestra is doing in the small clips we get. What interests me is, what is more likely to leak? Recording session footage in which you can hear the alternate cues being performed or full recording sessions? I have no idea about the likelihood of either of these things.
  14. WOW. I've just realised, at 3.43 in the video you see John Williams conducting a full orchestra, with the Tintin opening sequence playing on the big scoring screen!! You see it again at 3.56, could this be John conducting the alternate Tintin heroic adventure cue ??
  15. I haven't finished my list but having just seen the Tintin featurette- I'd love a complete recording sessions release with those alternate cues. Not that there's much of a chance...
  16. Do you think John Williams recorded the alternate opening cues or just played them through with the orchestra? If they were recorded someone needs to get them released, I would just love to hear them so much!!! Great featurette though

  18. Even if you believe that the finale of 'i could have done more' is over dramatic, which is understandable, it is such a wonderful moment musically. The rest of the strings play the theme and you have the gorgeous solo violin playing over, I'm a violin player myself and one day I would love to play this, whether being the soloist or in the main section of the orchestra. One of my favourite moments from the score. And I personally think the music works fantastically in the film as well

I haven't seen the film but a friend of mine has and said it was only OK because it was trying to be a Spielberg film like E.T but it was missing something that made a film like E.T so good. What, in your opinion, is missing? Conviction. And by the looks of it, an editor. Haha could you elaborate on that?

  21. I too wish he could have done a disney classic animation, it could have been wonderful! I'm also bitterly dissapointed that he did not score Harry Potter 4-8, I always find myself listening to pieces of his music and thinking 'this kind of thing would have been great for that bit' like I've always thought he could have written some kind of 'summon the heroes' thing for the goblet of fire or something more serious like 'sean's theme' for when stuff got more dark. It may be a flawed series of films but it always had such a variety of emotions and set pieces that could have been wonderful music.
  22. That list is incomplete. It shows only some highlights of their discography. There is a list of all recordings from the LSO online, the latest is from 2009 but I think it is very interesting. http://images.cch.kc...iv/pubs/LSO.pdf Prisoner of Azkaban is definately not performed by the LSO, not only shown on the LSO discography. If you hear the style of the LSO you will notice that it does not sound like the LSO; it is only a hollywood orchestra. Thanks for that info. Could you elaborate on what you mean by 'it does not sound like the LSO'? Is it something like the tone of the instruments?
