  1. This year is more like 2002 than any of his other double nominations, that year we had HPSS and AI, both fantastic scores, but LOTR was going to win either way. Of course, for me anyway, I think The Artist is just winning because it's the gimmick of the year whilst LOTR was a worthy winner. Even though I think Tintin and War Horse are miles ahead of the The Artist I think it's really good an orchestral score will win this year And who knows we've been wrong before... there is still a tiny hope for War Horse.
  2. Well I saw the film last night and I have to say, I was amazed! The film is not perfect. There are many flaws that did annoy me, especially up to the story of the two German boys. But the film was made so well, the shots, the music, the acting, so that even when it was flawed it still had a likeable charm. But in comparison to some less enjoyable scenes, the rest of the film was excellent. There were some scenes that where so powerful, I actually got the weird feeling that I was watching a film that was already known as a classic film from years ago. Like when the soldiers went over the top, or the horse in no man's land. Even the last scene was incredible. The lighting was just stunning, and the music just shone. When the cellos play the friendship theme in that wonderful emotional part of track 15, it couldn't have fitted the scene better. Something I'm suprised less people are talking about is how clever many of the deaths in the film are handled. You never see blood, but there are several deaths that actually benefited from not actually seeing what happened such as , really well done! Overall, a fantastic movie in my opinion, though with flaws, is forgiven for it's general technical and emotinal brilliance throughout, and a few scenes which just make your jaw drop! Not schmaltzy I'd say, but really nice Spielberg sentimentality, with some good Spielberg humour too
  3. What theme does the violin solo play? Oh and btw great job!
  4. I loved the film as a whole, but the opening to 'Inglourious Basterds' is superb! The tension built up within the scene is perfect and of course Christoph Waltz's performance is also wonderful. The way they just talk about the milk the farmer makes, then slowly reveal the sinister side to where things are going is timed really well and gives the conclusion of the scene an extra bite. A great opening which sets up the film with a bang that really stays with you
  5. That last statement was really beautiful. Made me quite sad when he was talking about Spielberg going on longer without him, something I have always tried to avoid thinking about "He said he has begun consulting with a musicologist about "Lincoln," - What could that be about?
  6. http://filmscoremont...re-Friday-1612/ It sounds like I'm going to LOVE this score with the film I love good old fashioned scoring!
  7. Don't know if this has been shared but someone seems to have got unreleased music from the official uk site. Can't listen to it though so don't know if it's legit http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rx79KHHpaE8
  8. Awesome! Didn't think they would enter Tintin for consideration, leaving Warhorse to be the only candidate and not splitting the vote. But to be honest it's probably the best thing to do since the Artist will most likely win, so at least now there's a chance for a double nomination.

Have there been any hints about a prequels complete score release, I mean apart from the 3-D release of the films?
  10. http://www.totalfilm.com/reviews/cinema/war-horse So this is a really good review of the film but they say the main problem with the movie is the score! For those who have seen it, why are so many saying it dosen't work in the film? Is it scored to much or is the music inappropriate?
  11. Well this is a very bad review..... does anyone agree with it completely or any bits of it? http://www.gq.com/entertainment/movies-and-tv/201112/worst-movies-2011
  12. An article about the premiere for 'War Horse'. They are obviously pushing the score; they played it on repeat throughout the entire after-screening dinner Little comment at the end though, about the music guiding people's emotions to much, but they also say it's beautiful. Not sure whether this helps Oscar chances or not http://www.hollywood...pielberg-269462
  13. That is exactly what I thought! Corny can be a really bad thing and some people hate it full stop. But it's Spielberg and it's a great story so I don't care how corny it is I just can't wait I love syruppy Spielberg!! Film looks phenomenal and I love how the music is used so much. You can just imagine the reactions this would get on the forum if it was released before we heard the Friendship Theme it would be crazy!!!
  14. I would have to say act one overall but there are some tracks that I just can't stop listening to in the other acts such as 'pulling the cannon' - the trumpet in this one gives me such chills. Also track track 14 and 'no man's land'. It's all just so fantastic!
  15. "Williams work in the movie was very interesting and modernist especially with his use of polytonality. Polytonality, which refers to the sound of two different keys playing simultaneously, is popular in scores for space films and action/adventure films. It is associated with Igor Stravinsky’s ballets the Rite of Spring and Petrushka and the two chords that characterize polytonality are often referred to as the “Stravinsky” chords. Something known as the Lydian mode can also be used in a polytonal way, because the C Lydian mode uses both C major and D major triads. Williams combines polytonality and the Lydian mode for the score of “E.T.” (1982) to express a mystic, dreamlike and heroic quality."- Found this on Wiki too, if it helps explain it for some people
  16. Does bitonality mean the same thing as polytonality? If so I can't give any examples but I know John Williams does it a lot. - In the comments of this video of 'Over The Moon' from E.T a guy says, "For the theory people out there; something that illustrates John Williams genious with the E.T. score is his use of polytonality, which refers to music played in two keys simultaneously. The human mind is not normally accustomed to following music with two tonic centers, which can often give the polytonal technique an otherworldly or just outright bizarre feeling. Of course, this works perfectly for E.T.; a story centering on a lost creature from another planet"- So If he's right then E.T is a very good example What do you mean by 'pitch centers' instead of traditional keys? Is it a diffrent way of composing? My theory can be very vague
  17. I'm going to write music for a film soon as well, the time is very limited for scoring once the film is shot so I have written the main thematic idea already. I think you can get a theme for a film before seeing it but really for the music to work its best it should be scored with the composer having seen it. The film can often inspire things that you woud not have thought of
  18. I love the samples for tracks 5, 7 and 15 the most so far. It almost feels like some of the music from this album, especially the stuff that's obviously for representing the happy times and the actual landscape, is what John Williams LOTR Shire music would sound like Some of the action music has a bit of a LOTR vibe as well. Obviously with Williams orchestration which is just wonderful! Someone else in the room was watching a shark attack video while I was listening to the samples and it used the cracken music from 'Pirates of the Caribbean'. Such a huge contrast
  19. Yes I was suprised how much action music their was. The constant snare drum seems to be a recurring feature in the action music and its a great touch.
  20. I'm a new person here and I really need to know how to do this so I don't ruin anything for anyone in my ignorance!
  21. Its intresting that there is piano in the track 'POST EDITED' because it could mean that "FilmComposer518" could have got it slightly wrong and the piano is at the end of the film, but just not in the credits. Love the sound of 'Plowing' though sounds like part of the trailer music which is just phenomenal! Getting very good vibes for this score Out of respect to the people who are trying to avoid spoilers, please refer to the samples of tracks 12, 14, and 15 by their track number rather than their track title. Thank you.
