I used to play in a brass orchestra and besides Prussian and German marches we did arrangements of ABBA songs. Compared to that, the Flashdance piece is neat, indeed.

back in Berlin. Four closing thoughts:

    1. despite the historical scale of the event I can‘t let go of the thought that I feel like it was a missed opportunity to perform more unknown pieces like War Horse (which, besides CE3K, was my personal highlight). It’s obviously not my part to tell JW which of his music to perform, but the set list does not reflect his whole oeuvre at all. Then again, that’s also a more general concern I’m addressing here: The JW signature editions are great concert music but I wished there would be more actual score material as performed and recorded for the film. The last 20 minutes of TESB would make a marvelous concert experience IMHO.

    2. I witnessed one of the most hilarious scenes on Sunday after the concert at the stage entrance where about 50 people were waiting for JW and ASM. One of the usher came out for a smoke, standing in front of the door, just 1 meter apart from the waiting crowd, lighting his cigarette, standing there and looking like Daniel Craig‘s Bond, not giving a damn at all. Hard to describe, but I’ve had a blast.

    3. As great as the concert experience was, I have to say that watching 1917 in a cinema yesterday night had an even more emotional impact on me...

We were watching 1917 on Saturday at the Burg Kino right after the concert, and I have to admit, with it being a war film and all, it was quite a relaxation compared to that emotional thrill ride at the Musikverein.

I agree with the wish that JW would program more actual film cues rather than only the concert suites. But that'll never happen, alas

lemoncurd reacted to Marian Schedenig in JWFan Vienna meeting (Saturday, 18.01.2020)
Apparently, Austrian ex-president Heinz Fischer was spotted by (by some of "our" people, not by the ushers) recording part of Saturday's concert on his phone.

Some fact snippets I gathered from people who talked to people (in the orchestra etc.):

    - The Philharmoniker were big fans of Williams as a conductor and specifically pointed out his sensible and no-nonsense style as opposed to exaggerated theatrics by many of their regular famous big name conductors. They also supposedly said that such an enormous audience reaction and general atmosphere is unprecedented, even considering the New Year's Concerts.

    - Originally, three encores (i.e. a "usual" number) were planned: The Duel, Remembrances, and Raiders' March. It was the Philharmoniker who had their go between ask Williams if they couldn't do the Imperial March as well. When he heard the request, Williams was worried that it would be too hard on the horns after such a long and difficult concert - until they told him that it was in fact the special wish of the horn section. My own guess is that ASM requested to also add Nice to Be Around, based on her often citing it as one of her favourites in interviews.

    - I spotted Austrian ex-president Heinz Fischer and his wife, as well as ex-chancellor Wolfgang Schüssel, at the Saturday concert. Fischer left before the final encore (Imperial March).

    - The Imperial March was a fitting encore, give that Williams was staying at the Hotel Imperial (right next to the Musikverein).

For me one of the highlights was the WarHorse, that flute player was amazing and that brass choir in the end was just too much, cried like a baby!!!
