I would like this to be an ongoing compendium to quote and assemble the best the year has to offer. It might be a chance to mention some scores which are not broadly discussed and get theme recommendations. While referring to themes it would be better to give exact timings. I'll start with a few which stuck out for me so far. Joy's Theme (0:00-2:42) Ilya's Theme (0:00-2:53) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HI5MOvh9GhI Solo's Theme (1:03-2:18) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TKsz2e44plw Kingsman Theme (0:38-1:03) New Avengers Theme (1:16-3:12) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=93aCwnlTvJY Athena's Theme (2:26-4:40) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k9Hcp3WBfxI Mad Max Theme (3:38-4:32) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=liPiHSVtloQ

I can list literally just one. The Lion King That's it.

I've seen the film now. And the main theme does stick. Like every occurrence of it was obvious and lovey. And I think it is Joy's theme. It played at crucial moments for her.

I like the main theme (only have heard a couple of times). I wonder if it will stick. Like in a few days will I get up in the morning and doodle it on the piano. Slightly off topic, but with 4 scores, it would be a proper tragedy if MG still fails to land an academy award nomination this year. It has eluded him since his win and much lesser composers have racked up nom after nom. I think this score is the most likely to get him back into some awards conversation.

I absolutely love this score. One of Williams' best themes for sure. Its loveliest rendition comes at 2:05 in this below track. This is just an all round fantastic score.

The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014) by Alexandre Desplat
TheUlyssesian replied to TheUlyssesian's topic in General Discussion
Desplat always gets nominated for boring shit like Argo and what not. This would be a not unwarranted nomination. But more importantly, I hope this film breaks through and gets nominated across the board. Its about time a Wes Anderson film hit big at the Oscars and I think this could be it. -
The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014) by Alexandre Desplat
TheUlyssesian replied to TheUlyssesian's topic in General Discussion
His movies are very quirky and kinda drolly esoteric but you can't look past how skillfully made they are. Budapest is a wondrous feat of film direction. -
The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014) by Alexandre Desplat
TheUlyssesian replied to TheUlyssesian's topic in General Discussion
Its incorporated well in the movie. That entire cue is passing off a theme form section to section of the orchestra as the characters escape various situations. It is very interesting that when they enter a church, the entire church joins in on the chorus of the background score! I think that was interesting. The film itself is Wes Anderson's masterpiece. -

Oh yes Wes Anderson! I'll edit the main post. -
Desplat's third consecutive work with Wes Anderson. And it might again get him an Oscar nomination yet again. It works great in the film and contains Desplat's most attractive main idea in sometime, it is a very wistful and sentimental little riff for the Zero Mustafa character. You can listen to it on the album. Can't find it on youtube. The movie is basically a caper and has lots of chase music and scherzo type stuff, and it is all rather fun in a kind of pastiche manner. But the main idea is a keeper. Anybody else like it?

I am not familiar with his music at all. Any recommendations?

Almost all the music composed in Bollywood is for songs but sometimes they do have some nice lyric-less music composed. Below I have embedded two of the best themes to come out of Bollywood, both helpfully presented in concert suit formats to showcase their themes. Have a listen and share what do you think. From the movie Bombay by A.R. Rahman From the movie Kal Ho Na Ho (Tomorrow May Never Come) by Shankar, Ehsaan, Loy What are some of the good ones that you have heard? I am trying to look up some other nice suggestions.

The Book Thief (2013) - New Williams film score!

A truly beautiful piano rendition of the Finale that I chanced across. It really is quite lovely. -
Who Really Created the 'Inception' BRAAAM?
TheUlyssesian replied to TownerFan's topic in General Discussion
What he says is such hokum, what he says his music is and what it actually is are such different things. He basically talks out of his *** most of the time. Can his """muscic""" really be played at a concert or anything? No, because if you wanted to listen to metal utensils banging, you would go to a factory and not a concert. Frankly what he writes is not even music to me in the traditional sense, it falls more in the realm of sound design. -
The Book Thief (2013) - New Williams film score!
TheUlyssesian replied to scissorhands's topic in JOHN WILLIAMS
The piano solo that begins at 54 seconds in the Finale and lasts through the end is one of the loveliest things Williams has written in some years. It is so gorgeous and so aching. It is the work of a very mature artist, the kind of music you really don't hear in movies these days. I would say it is probably my second favorite score of the year after The Wind Rises which I think is a masterpiece level score by Hisashi. -
The Book Thief (2013) - New Williams film score!
TheUlyssesian replied to scissorhands's topic in JOHN WILLIAMS
As far as my experience is what Desplat, it is that he usually writes mono-thematic scores. Or maybe with 2 themes at best. And I found his skill as a crafter of melodies middling at best. So in that regard Book Thief is far from a Desplat score, the themes are many and many are strong. The main theme has grown on me. It is quite distinct. -
Anyone else like the main theme? I rather liked it!

Reads like a very cursory surface level review. -
The Book Thief (2013) - New Williams film score!
TheUlyssesian replied to scissorhands's topic in JOHN WILLIAMS
It was of course trying to be like a Golden Age score and in that regard it was successful, atleast the love theme. But here's the real deal, the love theme from Steiner's The Big Sleep which I think might have inspired the above theme. It starts around 50 seconds in. -

I'd say he has composed an even better one afterwards I think its the love theme beginning at 53 seconds in. I think that's quite good. I remember the love theme has a very memorable and epic rendition during the finale in the film. -
The Book Thief (2013) - New Williams film score!

I think Newman wrote some very good stuff for Wall-E. Nooooo! The trouble with this sentence is that a typical Desplat score leaves no impression at all. -
The Book Thief (2013) - New Williams film score!

Its both. He is that much better and the composers today are that much worse than the length of the universe separates them in talent and accomplishments.
