  1. Still a bit amazing that David Newman does not make the cover but the conductor does. There are some contractual shenanigans that we don't know about.
  2. One thing I'll add is the main concert piece - or the main theme piece - Obituary is played twice. 1m ad 6m. I compared the two and it seems 6m can be produced by micro-editing 1m. So I find it interesting they recorded that again. They honestly did not need to. They are identical just that 1m has an additional 20-25 seconds in the beginning and some 10 seconds of more material that's it. The score is quite good and adds a lot to the film in terms of mood and setting. It will make most sense in context. But the obituary cues can be enjoyed on their own as a concert piece.
  3. I think it is the complete score. The film is an omnibus - collection of discrete stories. Here is how the film is structured - Section 1 - Prologue (Billy Murray's section) Section 2 - Owen Wilson's story Section 3 - Tilda Swinton's story Section 4 - Frances McDormand's story Section 5 - Jeffrey Wright's story Section 6 - Epilogue (Billy Murray's section again) Section 2 and 4 I am pretty sure are scored entirely with songs and source music. Section 1 and 6 are very short and basically have the main thematic piece - Obituary and its reprise in 3 cues. Meat of the score is Section 3 and 5. Now in section 3, all the cues are sequentially available save - 3m4 and 3m14. These are all shorter cues so these could easily have been dropped from the final film mix or maybe the scenes were cut. So based on my understanding of the film and the naming - each cue is named by movement - describes the scene - has the take number (version 3 or 4) and says Final Mix - so I would say yes indeed, we seem to have the complete final recording sessions of everything Desplat wrote that was used in the movie in the final mix form! This is therefore an exemplary release. It seems they really took the academy's direction to heart. The academy wants the film music as appearing in the film in the chronological order for FYC purposes. And this is exactly that.
  4. I am not immensely familiar with his work either. I don't listen to watch a lot of musical theater but I read about it and just on the basis of that it has to be said this man was a monument, a titan of the musical theater industry. Surely one of the top 5 or top 10 most important people in the entire history of the medium. His contribution is legitimately immense.
  5. https://www.filmtracks.com/titles/eternals.html Chris Clemmensen is a fan!
  6. The promo for this is coming on strong It is a big investment. I think they maybe hoping to make bank or be gunning for oscars. Both are quite possible if the movie is any good and is able to stand outside the shadow of the original.
  7. This is why I want to see this. Speilberg has filmed a part of the famous gym dance sequence in a single long take. https://www.empireonline.com/movies/news/west-side-story-steven-spielberg-on-restaging-an-iconic-sequence-in-a-very-hard-oner-exclusive-image/ ---------------- Also this was released - genuine actual music from the score - not trailers. Do we think it sounds like a small 20 piece Broadway pit orchestra? For what its worth - this sounds like a beautifully played and very energetic recording.
  8. That's a GREAT point. We saw this play out publicly with the Adele interview controversy. All junket interviews are OWNED by the studio and they only share the content with the press AFTER reviewing. So I am sure all difficult questions will be completely scrubbed by whatever interviews Disney chooses to reveal.
  9. Apparently Ansel is going to be part of the press junket for this film. Journalists are wondering how that will play out. I bet Disney is daring them to ask unsavory questions at the threat of permanent blacklisting from Disney properties.
  10. 1. The Last Jedi 2017 2. The Force Awakens 2015 3. Rogue One 2016 4. Solor 2018 5. Rise of Skywalker 2019 The last 2 are unspeakably bad.
  11. Same here. Instant masterpiece. I heard it in the trailer and it was written in my mind in stone forever. Total classic! And absolutely one of his best themes and one of the great themes of cinema.
  12. First of all Chris Columbus will never get that job. And second if we are waiting for the cast to be the right age then JW will be over 100 by then.
  13. I think these days we watch Speilberg films for their exemplary craft rather than anything else. I hope this is another great directorial turn from him.
  14. It is a purely semantic difference to call this movie a remake or a re-adaptation of the broadway musical. The reality is it is impossible to differentiate looking at the final product. I will even say this, rights and IP or musicals are extremely fungible. Famous and successful movies affect subsequent broadway productions of shows. For example, the movies of West Side Story, Sound of Music, Cabaret, My Fair lady all have a huge impact on how the shows are performed today. ALSO I might add, the reason this movie exists is because the 1961 version exists. The reason a second adaptation is made because it seeks to do some things differently from the first adaptation. The reason the casting is more Latino in this film is because it was less Latino in the 1961 film. To even try to theorize that this movie has nothing at all do with the 1961 would be to completely ignore the reality of how movies are made. It would in-fact be FOOLISH for Spielberg and co to not closely study the 1961 version. And I will state this again - West Side Story did not NEED another movie adaptation. I think we could all start with that premise. I don't want to repeat the arguments made above but a movie is not made for me alone or you alone or that person alone. It is made for THE MAJORITY OF THE AUDIENCE. For THE MAJORITY OF THE AUDIENCE, the 1961 version will work perfectly in 99% of the cases. It was commercially successful, critically successful, won great prizes and renown. That it was a artistic and commercial success is without dispute. It might not work for me. Or you. Or that person. But for the majority of the audience it does. As such, the movie does cast a shadow. And it would not at all be wrong to call this movie a remake. It is only a metaphysical distinction.
  15. I think Kathleen is very touchy. She has now fired 8 directors from Star Wars films I think.
  16. I think its a really cool theme. It has several components.
  17. Saw the film. 3 themes occur throughout. I will call them Eternals theme A, Eternals Theme B and maybe Love theme/Sersei's theme. 2 of them (first two) are memorable and after watching movie once you will remember them. You can't say that about a lot of films. I will add more later.
  18. those are the 4 names I would have taken. I will throw in North and Steiner. There is one mark against Williams. Only one. innovation. Williams is the perhaps the most exemplary film composer in the traditional symphonic romantic orchestral realm. But it can be argued he doesn’t have many scores that break the mold. hermman has several. Scores like Psycho and main titles like North by Northwest are some of the most originally things ever done in the movies aurally.
  19. Yes. & He was unhappy. & Yes it makes sense. But will Spielberg still go with a 30 piece orchestra sound in a 100 million dollar modern film - THAT I am skeptical of.
