  1. I see what you mean, and I do it all the time. Lately I've been so busy that if I see a movie at all, it's on in the background and I'm not paying attention. The other day, I sat down and really watched Gladiator and forgot how great of a movie it was. It's hard to explain and easy to forget what makes some of our favorite movies so special. After a while, we just accept that some movies are our "favorites" without ever watching them. Then, when you do finally give all your attention to them, it's an experience, definitely.
  2. Freeman has a nice, friendly twang to it, but there's no doubt that James Earl Jones is THE voice of cinema. Topped everything that came before it, and will top all that follows. But I do find Freeman to have a near "perfect" voice. Lends credibility to almost anything, I think.
  3. Wow, I've never even heard of Bachelor Flat, is it any good? I do like How to Steal a Million, but can only afford to dish out any cash for the biggest of big. By the way, I thought these were supposed to be released on the 16th? What's the story on that release, then?
  4. I just wish that maybe they meshed the cues together on both releases. I never understood why they do this. Gettysburg had the same situation. Also, Disc 2 seems to be Disc 1 all over again, just with different titles. I seriously doubt there is 50 minutes of good unreleased music. I've seen the film MANY times, and as a music score buff, never noticed anything significant missing from the release. I haven't done the math, but I'm betting Disc 2 contains all the music from Disc 1 plus unreleased. I can't recall how long the OST was so I could be wrong. But those track titles really make it seem like they're not just unreleased.
  5. I bashed the score pretty hard when it first came out, but it's grown on me in a shallow, dumb entertainment sort of way. It has a bit of atmosphere. But the problem was it was too long as it was. Reducing it to...I don't know....four tracks would suffice. But a $50 dollar two-disc set? What could possibly be unreleased other than a few tones?
  6. The Russian theme was great, I wish it was there for more than 5 seconds in the score. Same problem with the Star Wars Prequels. With the Trade Federation March Williams had the new Imperial March on his hands. And instead, he almost completely drops it except for one glorious statement in AOTC and the three scores lack any musical continuity.
  7. E.T. has absolutely fantastic music, but as a whole, there seems to be a lot of "dead space." Whereas ToD is pretty exciting all the way through, so my vote goes for ToD.
  8. How to Steal a Million is pretty much the only early Williams' score I like. As for the 16th releases, I'd be really happy with Star Trek V or Back to the Future. I can't really think of anything else that could be released that I would be interested in.
  9. I never understood the bashing of Star Trek V. I used to make fun of it a lot, but I saw it recently and overall, it's exactly what we like in a Star Trek movie. The character interplay was amazing, lots of good one-liners, a sense of humor. The premise was a little out there, but this IS a show about exploring the unknown and such. Not the best of the series, but it wasn't bad. And I heard rumors they were going to let Shatner do a Director's Cut which is supposedly a much better film, but when Nemesis bombed they decided not to, which is sad. it's always interesting to see Director's Cuts, and sometimes they can completely change a film.
  10. Goldsmith has some great stuff, but he's nowhere near the caliber of John Williams. I have spoken, and thusly the facts are finalized.
  11. Isn't it a little early to make such assumptions? You must believe in change, brother! It'd be easier if this promise of "change" were something new, but we've been here and seen this all before.
  12. I'm in the same boat. I think when you listen to a certain kind of music long enough, even if you're not "trained" you get a feel for how things are structured and can come up with really good stuff on your own. But like some of you, I can't read or write music (I used to be able to read it, but it's one of those skills that fell by the wayside) and I don't know how to use any of those programs. I did experiment once for a while with Sibelius but couldn't get anything to sound the way it did in my head.
  13. He's also approved Star Trek: TPM, Spock's Brain, and Star Trek V. I think some of you are reading a little too much into him being in this. All it proves is that SPOCK is treated well in his mind, regardless of the quality of the movie.
  14. Anyone see the Youtube video of Shatner's reaction to the trailer? It's pretty funny.
  15. Guys, guys, it's clearly John Williams the guitarist.
  16. We should self-regulate here. It won't become an AICN talkback because we discuss music and "refined" things here. We're generally not a bunch of horny 11 year olds with no self control.
  17. Yeah, but for once it's not the main characters that do it.
  18. You know, aside from the whole racial thing, why would Foxx ever be considered for this role? He's not a good actor and he has no presence.
  19. I thought this was some sort of Nazi thread for a minute.
  20. Isn't it a little early to make such assumptions?
  21. That's the only way. No one should believe them when they say this isn't a reboot. A franchise film is not made unless there is an intention to create sequels. If this wasn't a reboot, those sequels would have to fit into continuity and not challenge the TOS. Each sequel would go farther and farther from "canon." Therefore, this IS a reboot, no matter what they say.
  22. Are you sure? When 30 composers write one minute of music it can be difficult to straighten out who gets what note.
