WilliamsStarShip2282 got a reaction from MikeH in JW is writing a new violin concerto for Anne-Sophie Mutter - "Violin Concerto No. 2"
I'm still amazed the guy is nearly 90, not to mention his own giant body of work, he still remains really fresh.

Every once in a while, deep down, I think there really is nothing new to add to the existing musical literature (classical, pop, whatever). It is just new spins on old material. But then Williams brings me back. He did it six years ago with Rey's theme and now, in terms of contemporary classical, this concerto--particularly the second and third movements. I am warming to the first as a true "prologue" and really like the fourth, but my goodness are those middle two just perfect.

I know this sounds really nerdy.... but i just saw the timing and the concerto is 35 minutes. For those there, was that not the fastest 35 minutes ever? I can't tell if it was the concerto or just seeing him on stage

My sentiments exactly. Thank you.

If this concerto along with the other works he has had with Mutter and the VPO doesn't propel him to Classical Music Status, then we have truly gone nuts.

Is it not for sale or something anymore?
Funny I also hear some Sabrina sounds in the concerto in more than one part actually! I wonder if it was just in the back of his mind from the arrangements.
I loved the concerto, absolutely need more than one listen. It is absolutely amazing to me how one composer can have such a diverse repertoire. Stravinsky and Schonberg are really the only two other composers that come to mind like that. It's interesting that this piece also featured a big harp solo, less so than Highwood, but he's done that a few times in his works. There is a big harp solo in the Viola Concerto as well. This piece has his finger prints on it, but it is very different from Highwood, or the other concerto and Treesong....or any of the other concerti actually.
The orchestra was off tonight though, and I think everyone was a little off, including the audience. Maybe that is just me. 98% of the people inside the shed were over 1000, so it was a little depressing haha but the program was excellent. Tanglewood, although the atmosphere is perfect for for a concert, acoustically is not the best venue for pieces like this that have refined sounds, so we all might hear more in the recording. They also don't have a ton of rehearsal time. Highwood was similar, I think I recall the BSO running the piece once before the recorded concert and that was it. Can't wait to hear more performances of the concerto!

A lovely work!
The cantilena that also closes the piece sounds almost like a contorted version of "Moonlight" (from Sabrina). Makes me wonder if it could have been intentional?
As much as I love his first violin concerto, this is (obviously) the more mature work of the two.
Bravo, Maestro.

The second movement is a love at first sound
It's basically what I am looking for in contemporary classical.

With DG providing a post-live stream for the concert, I wouldn't be surprised if we get an official release by them before long (in 20 different versions and formats). Might be they make a separate studio recordings, but that's expensive, and it also can't be sold on video, so I would imagine there's a good chance they'll release a Blu-ray of the actual premiere concert.

An attractive woman in a tight outfit and my mind naturally gravitates to how good JW looks.

WilliamsStarShip2282 reacted to Tom in Tanglewood 2021 season includes several Williams concerts
It is irritating, but without the big donors, there is probably not a BSO/Pops. My biggest gripe is when the people do not actually use their ticket or, worse yet for a Williams's concert, leave early.

The DG Stage (Deutsche Grammophon's digital stage with paid ticketed events) will be broadcasting the July 24 concert from Tanglewood. From the email I just received:
"In the second half of the month we’re delighted to present the world premiere of John Williams’ Violin Concerto No.2 with Anne-Sophie Mutter from this year’s Tanglewood Festival 2021..."
https://www.dg-premium.com/dg_stage_video/world-premiere-of-john-williams-violin-concerto-no-2-at-tanglewood-2021/
Cost is €9.90 and the ticket is valid until July 27 for repeat viewings.
The event on their calendar is listed as 8 pm central European time on July 25. So, not sure what this means given the concert is July 24 (at 8 pm EDT I believe). Perhaps since that time would be the middle of the night in Germany, they are just holding it to go up for viewing the next day at a featured time. Or maybe since Tanglewood is also selling digital subscriptions, the BSO retained exclusive "live" coverage. I think it will also stream live on WCRB radio.
In any case, it's great there are a few platforms available to see and hear the debut.

I am actually really excited to hear this. I am a fan of the Scherzo, which I think most people here are not. I will note that it is very different from his other works, although so is Conversations....
