I would take more The Incredibles sequels.. Toy Story? I think it should have ended at 3.

    Best Picture nominees ranked:

    The greats:
    1. Anatomy of a Fall: fantastic performance and script that keeps you guessing until the end. Courtroom drama done well.
    2. Poor Things: creative and full of memorable moments. Could have ended 20 minutes sooner, but the highs are very high, specially the main trio.
    3. Holdovers: missed this kind of film. Shed a tear or two.
    4. Oppenheimer: also lost steam for me in the last act (which was the last hour). Everything in the movie regarding the actual bomb is the bomb! But every time that Downey Jr character was on the screen, the movie lost me (not because of his performance, which is great, but that plotline was done much better in Amadeus. The movie would have benefited with the whole thing droped and a bigger focus on the bomb and the guilt that followed).
    5. American Fiction: I looove Jeffrey Wright in this film! The satire thinks its smarter than it actually is, and you can kind of see that the director still has room to grow, but the familiar drama is great.
    6. Zone of Interest: I still want to give a rewatch as I watched during TIFF, along with many others, so didn't cause the impact that I see from other people, even tho some scenes stuck with me. Also, it marks the one instance where a Mica Levi actually works in the film!

    The good:
    7. Barbie: fun while in Barbieland, and bad when in the real world. Would have worked had stayed in Barbieland, with the only "real world" moment be with the Barbie maker in the end (kind like Lego the Movie). Speaking of which, that was a much better toy commercial that didn't even get a best animated nomination! How did this one get so much love? The dance scenes are so poorly directed (the opening of Ted 2 gives it a run for its money), and c'mon! Who though that Will Ferrel had any business being in here? Still, that production design!
    8. Maestro: the conducting scenes are great, but the main plot was a little muddled and boring actually. Also, what went over Cooper's head to film the main conflict between the couple in a very distant shot where you can barely see the actor's face and expressions? Love Carey Mulligan in it tho!

    The "didn't work for me"
    9. Past Lives: barely registered for me when I watched back in the summer. I remember liking the husband character.
    10. Killers of the Flower Moon: now THIS really didn't work for me. The original idea was that the film was going to focus on the FBI, and that sounds much better than what we got. Focusing on the greed of men (that we saw plenty of time, and Scorsese did better in the past) may be the baffling choice. DiCaprio overacts and rightfully was snubbed, DeNiro plays DeNiro, and Gladstone is great with what she is given. It's funny that the movie seems to skip scenes where the interesting stuff is about to happen (like Mollie's journey to get investigators).

What should have been nominated instead of these last 4:
    1. Dungeon & Dragons: really, best adventure film IN YEARS! This movie is going to be LOVED in a few years!
    2. Air: made me feel inspired to go back to work! Sad to see ignored in the Oscar, probably for being released in the begging of the year.
    3. Godzilla Minus One: masterpiece where the drama scenes are even better than the Godzilla ones.
    4. Guardians of the Galaxy 3: the best Bradley Cooper performance of the year. And the proper end chapter of MCU for me.

    Anatomy Of A Fall

    Wooooooow!
I love courtroom dramas and this is truly one of the best I've seen. This film truly puts the audience in a place of complete confusion. Because we also don't get to see what happens, the whole film through you're left guessing. Just like it would be in real life.

The best thing about this film is the script. Written by Justine Triet (who also directs) and Arthur Harari. This is one of those scripts I would love to read. It's one of the most real scripts, and therefor films, out there. What I mean by that is that there is no added drama. It all plays out like it would in real life. In the courtroom scenes for example. Every single word spoken in those scenes in not only written, but also performed in a real and honest way. People are stuttering, are searching to find the right words. You can feel there is a lot of tension there, but that's all done by the script, acting and camera placement.

Sandra Müller is fantastic in the lead role. She is able to convey so much, with very little. There were a few scenes where I was completely in awe of her performance, mostly because what she was doing is not easy.
The other standout is definitely Milo Machado Graner. What a performance for such a young person. He blew me away! Oh, and a shoutout to the dog!

This is one of those films of which I find it difficult to write down my thoughts. It moves me deeply and really makes my head spin with thoughts.
All I can say is that I thought it was brilliant and that it deserves all the nominations it's getting.

It is undeniable that he is technically very talented, has a great eye for casting (maybe his best attribute) and knows how to set up stuff. The first act of his both Star Trek, Super 8, Force Awakens, MI3, Lost, all had fantastic set up. I still believe that TFA was the perfect movie to restart the franchise. The small details mentioned here (Max Von Sydow, C-3PO red arm) were irrelevant to the plot and do not detriment the film if never explained.

Just watched Next goal wins yesterday at TIFF. The score is, as you described, almost non existent. There is a cue in the middle of the film that contains some nice exotic choir (a little bit like Soul Surfer), but lasts around 1 minute. The final game has a fine inspirational sport scoring, also with a bit of vocals. In total, the score doesn’t amount to more than 15 min. A suite should be enough.

The movie by the way is TERRIBLE. I can’t believe it made it to the festival.

Yeah I'm not entirely sure what the intent was there but the reading presented by these new canon pieces of media seems like it misses the point entirely and is a quick and easy justification to have current Jedi (like TLJ Luke) do some wild shit

Actually, nevermind, with the Yoda example I disagree. In Attack of the Clones Anakin talks about how the Jedi are forbidden to love yet points out the hypocrisy of saying that they should show compassion which he sees as unconditional love. I think with that as context that scene is definitely critiquing Yoda's approach there, especially given that it does not give Anakin comfort or peace.

Although...Anakin is definitely not meant to be in the right, so maybe it could be that the Jedi represent Zen Buddhism but Anakin represents an antithetical materialist viewpoint that is the reason he falls. You may actually be onto something there. However that's incongruent with Luke succeeding in ROTJ because of his attachment to his father, in spite of the wishes of the Jedi to detachedly kill him.

One of the weirdest thing in Star Wars is, if you know, that someone is on a certain planet, you more or less already found him or her. When you go there, you are landing in the exact same place.
This weird thing started, when in episode 1 Qui-Gon decided, he and Kenobi should get on separate droid ships and meet on the planet. And I thought, what if the other ship lands on the other side of the planet? Have a nice travel to find eachother. So, this shrinking of planets to actually just one little place/city shrinks the galaxy as well. The next level of stupidity in shrinking the galaxy was in episode 7, where the destruction 5 (FIVE!!!) different major planets by Star Killer base was visible from the forecourt of Maz's bar on Takodana.
In such a shrinked galaxy there is actually no place to hide anymore. So, if I really want to hide someone, it must be in another galaxy.

That may be a very strong Powell characteristic, and while Giacchino has done some of this in the past (The Incredibles, Ratatouille, Tomorrowland, Star Trek 3), it is not something that most composers do it anyways. Even some great action cues from the SW sequel trilogy are themeless.

Just saw it and was very disappointed.

I was looking forward to it as a fun, interesting, smart action film. It was quite bad all round.

The direction was utterly terrible and baffling. For some reason, every shot of an actor seemed to be an extreme close-up. And at least 50% of the film was in dutch angle!

The action was okay. Nothing revolutionary or mindblowing. John Wick 4 and even Fast X had more inventive and interesting action set-pieces. And the big cliff jump that has been overhyped to oblivion looked CGI because they had to replace the giant ramp with a giant CG cliff...

The plot was over the top and dramatically cringe-worthy. It would have been more at home in a Fast and Furious film. In fact the plot of Fast X is actually more believable and less unintentionally funny.

The performances are bad. And I mean really bad. E.V.E.R.Y.O.N.E is overacting like mad. Every line seems to be delivered like a soap opera. So so so dramatic. I don't recall a single line delivered like a normal human being.

This is part of the problem for me. One thing is have a complete film that can work by itself have a cliffhanger that will continue in the next film (Infinity war, Lord of the Rings and Dune pt1) however, when basic things like villain motivation don’t get explained and no plot gets its own ending is very frustrating.
take infinity war for example.. the movie clearly needs Endgame to fill complete, however, Thor has his arc that gets completed, Thanos has a good resolution. Nothing close happens here. The film just ends (after again, a very long almost 3 hour runtime).

I’ve watched yesterday and was surprisingly disappointed. First, all the conversation scenes were filmed so closed to the actors face that started getting really distracting. The humor didn’t work, there was one unnecessary murder scene that rubbed be off the wrong way and by the last hour (this movie is LONG) I stopped caring. Oh.. also, it follows the tradition of Fast X, Spiderverse where nothing gets resolved.

I think the mando verse is going to end in a retelling of the thrawn trilogy by timothy zahn, thrawn if going to return to the galaxy and go to mount tantiss to get the cloning technology and build his army. Instead of joruss cbaoth, the jedi clone probably is going to be snoke, and that is how the new republic will know about him. Maybe luke skywalker hand with anakin saber will make an appearance to make the luke clone… and thats how the saber will end in maz kanatas hands… i think the protagonista will be  mando, ahsoka, ezra, sabine… instead of the OT cast though.

    wishfull thinking…

definately omega + grogu will be the key to clone palpatine.
