  1. These are great, man every time I hear that Brachiosaurus theme, it makes me want to cry, it's so touching and magnificent, it's such a beautiful scene and music. Are these extras only on the Trilogy bundle? I've been looking to get the original on bluray, but didn't know I might get extras if get the trilogy. Does anyone know? Thanks!
  2. Wow, great news, one of my favorite scores. Just curious, so being 'engraved', does that mean they just took the handwritten score from elfman/bartek and put it through software to clean it up, so it's legible, like hand written to typed? Does anybody know a place online where I can see a pic of what an 'engraved' sheet looks like. I'm just what you actually get for the 75$. I've seen some 'published scores' before, but they are basically arrangements, and produced so the cues can be performed to an audience. Not really an exact representation of the original. But what a treat for a truly fantastic score, i wish (and still hope) this score gets more attention. There are so many rip offs of it, I can hear it's influence all over the place.
  3. Two source cues stick out, i don't know why, but they just fit the scenes so well. 1. Last crusade: Benny Goodman - You're a sweet little headache: 2. Saving private ryan - which i think is Edith Piaf "Tu es Partout" I would also include When you Wish Upon a Star, but i don't know if that qualifies with your intent, i believe it was heavily John-Williams-ised in Close Encounters.....Great song though. Also, I believe i read one of JW personal favorites.
  4. Great suggestions guys, I still need to give a listen to lots of these. Update, I've been using the batscore tracks recommended by @Score_Fan which have worked really well. Somehow the low brass and drive Zimmer puts into those tracks, works great while lifting! You know i tried Gladiator as an assumption, but actually couldn't find any tracks that really did it for me, but I don't nkow the movie/soundtrack that well. Any specific tracks you can recommend? I had pretty much written off any '80s or montage recommendation as a joke, or at least not for me. But I may have to give NeverEnding Story a try at least as a score on it's own...I never really listened to it, haven't seen the movie in many...many years. Thanks!
  5. Just stumbled upon Tangled around Christmas time. Totally overlooked it while at the theaters. But wow, i was blown away by how good it is. Kind of a mesh between Indiana Jones, Beauty and the Beast and Titanic. It's a great throw back to classic Disney (fairy tale, magic, princesses, etc.), very well done, with lots of modern polish. The songs where good (Menken), and I actually thought they were very well placed, and carefully planned out to lead the story rather than just have a song here or there. The story and pace of the movie were what grabbed me first. The beautiful animation and character development are what drew me to watch it a 2nd, 3rd time. One down side, I thought though, was the score (aside from the musical numbers). Especially during heavy dialogue scenes. It really shows what a master JW or Danny Eflman are when it comes to these subtle dialogue heavy scenes. The Menken score is almost drowned out, very 'background' during these scenes (i'm thinking campfire as one of them), and he didn't seem to weave the themes in to the score very often. I wonder sometimes how the movie would have been with Menken songs, and JW score...or even JW score and songs! ....interesting. Just a thought, please no bashing.
  6. Nice find. I think it's cool. To me it shows that JW has reached this sort of mystical place in the eye of general public...almost like Walt Disney. Where people may not know exactly what he does, but he's somehow associated with every most popular/successful movie that's come out for the last 30-40 years. And he's been nominated 48 times (second only to Disney)
  7. Agreed. The animation was great. I'm a big fan of Tangled, and when I heard the same team was fleshing out those same ideas (classic 2d warmth with 3d cgi technology) i was excited. Too bad the story takes a weird turn in the middle. But i love the look and feel of it, and i hope it spawns a full (well made, good story) movie. I'm not sure how the ending should have gone, but that's why i'm not a writer.
  8. @Score_Fan, tried some bat-tracks at the gym last night, they did work really well actually! Also, stumbled upon another great band/track for the gym. Although technically not film music, the band wrote music with the intent of being used in movie trailers, and sounding like film music (according to the wiki article). E.S. Posthumus - Pompeii
  9. Great suggestions! That track from Lord of the Flies is awesome, I probably never would have thought to look there, but very good. Found another good one: Clash of the Titans - There is a God in you. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0hcXTDaSb4Q
  10. Great ideas guys, thanks! Keep them coming. For the record, I do weightlifting, and I normally do Metallica, Pantera, Rammstein, and the like. I was just experimenting with some good scores too. The montage/rocky type track, doesn't really do it for me as they come across slightly more cheesy, than motivating. The only words I can think to describe the music want would be something like, "Out of my way, I'm going to kick some ass!!". Great! I was looking for More John Powell Tracks. I tried "Test Drive" from How to train your dragon, which is good, but wasn't quiet as 'kick ass' as I wanted. Tron and Conan are great ideas. I was actually thinking of the opening credits of Total Recall (Goldsmith) too, which is very Conan-esque. Great, this is really nice! Thanks, I was thinking that too, any Specific tracks? I wanted to try some of the batscores, but wasn't sure which tracks might be good?
  11. This is an interesting topic. I'm listening to Home Alone a lot these days (holiday season), one of my favorite scores. There are so many variations of the celeste sound in there, and I've always been curious what's synth and what's not. That's a great featurette, I've seen it before, but always enjoy seeing these sorts of things again. (JW on the scoring stage). Also I never noticed, it appears to be Steven Spielberg @11:00 holding the video camera and talking to JW. Funny to think of world class director SS carrying around Sony Handicam, getting these scoring sessions on video.
  12. I've wondered about this too. Especially with the organ. I guess he really had an organ in there with the orchestra? It was '82, so like Alex said, even if there was some very rudimentary synth happening, it wouldn't be the sampled kind, that could replicate real instruments. At least that's my take on it.
  13. Hey guys, just wondering, anybody have suggestions for film music for the gym? This last weekend, I listened to the opening of Slave Children Crusade (with the tail end of Saving Willie, just like it is in the movie) and found it very inspiring as I was lifting weights. I experimented, and found some good ones: "The Crimson Gump" - Forest Gump "Roll Tide" - Crimson Tide Anybody have any other suggestions? I primarily use it for lifting weights, so it only needs to be around 1 minute long while I do 1 set, so it doesn't need to be a whole track, just a particularly awesome section of a track is good too. Open to any ideas, thanks!
  14. Nice! Home Alone 1/2 have been some of my favorite scores from JW, and never actually got the home alone 2 edition, this will be perfect.
  15. I can relate. Try ToD, it's got so many great themes, and tracks. I could pretty much recommend every track on the concord release. Splashy, dark, fun, scary, adventure...it's just awesome.
  16. I know how it is sometimes - you know the main themes, but want to get a taste of the other music, and just frankly don't have time to sit and listen to the whole score. My first recommendation would be to listen to all 4 Indy's scores a coupel times, and chose for yourself, but if time is limited, and you want my opinion: ToD: Slave Children's Crusade Last Cruase: Indy's First Adventure ToD: Nocternal Activities ToD: The Mine Car Chase Raiders: The Miracle of the Ark Raiders: Desert Chase It's tough, they are all so good. But there's some that come to my mind first.
  17. Good list. I'm actually very surprised by no Indy music. Just mentally trying to simplify all the Indy scores to 3 or 4 tracks has taken too long. I would recommend listing to all 4, Personally I would start with Temple of Doom. And if, for some depressing reason, you could only listen to one track, i Might go with temple of doom, end credits, but man, that's a tough call. Go with all 4. For me, they are the pinnacle of JW.
  18. Yeah, those are nice. Well made. I like how they use various effects (split screen, fade in/out) to show the locations, and match them to the shot in the movie. I wish they would do a full blow Raiders of the Lost Ark one. (i think they have snippets, but not a full one like these). Watching the home alone one reminds me again how great that score is.
  19. 1. Temple of Doom 2. Last Crusade 3. Home Alone 4. Jurassic Park 5. Hook 6. Superman 7. Empire Strikes Back 8. E.T. 9. Schindler's List 10. Memoirs of Geisha Yes, big Indy fan - I listen to them all so much that they all seem separate. The last 4 or 5 could easily be swapped around, and replaced at any time.
  20. Is there a way to make another thread or page that is just the lists? Love the lists, the chatter...not so much.
  21. This will be very interesting. Hard to imagine a SW movie without JW score. Would whomever use the themes, come up with completely new music?...weird. I once heard Spielberg say, "This [introducing JW] is why i'll never make a movie without John WIlliams". It will be a weird world when JW passes.
  22. Wondering the same thing. Quotes like these are a dime a dozen on the internet, how are we supposed to know you really talked to him? More details maybe? As news of the disney/lucas deal broke, I was interested in this too. I watched Episode 3 this weekend, and have been listening/reading about episode 2 as well. And, it seems like GL did a much bigger hacking job on the prequels. There's music reused everywhere, from the prequels and the originals. I just really get the sense, (especially when comparing to the Indy series, where it seems Spielberg was much more engaged in the score) that GL was not that engaged, had JW write music, but all the while kept hacking at his movie, and therefore had to keep splicing and hacking up the music too. The prequels music, at least for me, have a very thrown together, hackish feeling. And i think it's the fault of GL.
  23. Just saw this. Wow, that was funny....i think part of the joke was the length...he just keeps singing and singing, while family members look on. Plus it's a fairly complex piece of music, and he says "sing along". ha, pretty funny. Love that piece of music.
  24. This JW one is nice, it has a lot of audio clips, from sound tracks, from interviews with JW and Spielberg. They'll talk, then play some audio of an interview JW did, quoting him on something, then play a piece of the score, etc. It's nicely produced. Some of the movies covered: Black Sunday, To Kill a Mocking Bird, Clone Wars, ET, Indy 4. To anyone interested, here's the complete list of audio sources:
  25. There's a nice JW Special on the IndyCast. Pretty good, with a nice collection of music snippets. http://www.forcecast.net/story/topstory/IndyCast_Special_9_The_Magic_of_John_Williams_148628.asp
