  1. Most of my favorite Williams scores are for imaginative, whimsical movies that are not especially grounded in reality. I have to wonder whether I would even listen to a Williams score for a documentary. It might be interesting as a curiosity, but beyond that...

I do want a documentary ABOUT him, though! I like Tom's idea. Then we'd get a Williams-written John Williams Theme!

  2. Fommes, is the "alternate" version of A New Beginning that you're referring to the piano version?

For my edit, I chose to use the OST version of Man in the Window, and edit the extra material onto the beginning and end. In spite of the different-sounding percussion between the two sources, I was happy enough with how it turned out. That long percussive ending is a pretty unique moment in the score.

  3. Empire Strikes Back

    Star Wars

    Return of the Jedi

    Phantom Menace

    Attack of the Clones

    Revenge of the Sith

I enjoy the first four on this list almost equally. The first two had IMO the very best new themes, and I rank Empire highest because it has such a huge number of memorable individual cues and scene-specific motifs. Phantom Menace was also really good for that... but it's been a strength of all the Star Wars scores, really.

  4. I think there's a good chance we'll get the original versions on blu ray in the next few years, but I bet they leave "A New Hope" in there.

I wouldn't be surprised if they also kept or redid some of the cleanup work from the SE, to garbage mattes and things like that. I don't really mind this or "A New Hope" to be honest, though it would be fascinating to see the original original originals.

And I will always love the entire original trilogy - if there's a new release sans SE material I'll be sharing filmmusic's excitement! (Y)

  5. Hmmm, well there's the shot of the remaining orcs riding away, and it does seem to imply we'll see them again. So it makes sense they would need the Weathertop scene to wrap things up.

Jason, you could very well be right but I don't think it's clear whether Thorin was originally reacting to Azog. Ori has a strong reaction, though, like he's saying "No!" It seems like he wouldn't be that surprised to see Yazneg.

  6. Blegh! It'll probably go something like that. Although the second film seems to have so many elves in it, his dislike for them will have to be addressed and maybe he'll warm up to them at the end of this one instead of the third one.

I REALLY don't want Azog to be the one to kill (mortally wound) Thorin, but it seems likely, doesn't it...

    :(

  7. I enjoyed reading this - your explanation of how the love theme melody relates to the main theme was very insightful. While it's clear just from listening that the love theme works really well alongside the main theme, the specific reason for that was something I had never put my finger on before.

  8. I'm sure PJ made Thorin into a flawed character in the first film so he could have more of a character arc by the end of the trilogy. Although he already sort of had one just within the first film itself, when he learned to appreciate Bilbo at the end.

Yes, but that trust and appreciation will be broken when Bilbo betrays him and takes the Arkenstone, so that arc is still going.

    Good point!
