Disney will probably save the more psychologically-involved, headier premises for future spinoffs, rather than actual saga episodes. Even with R1, we got to explore the shadier "gray" area, in between the usual black and white of good and evil that is common in Star Wars. We haven't even gotten to the third Disney-era Star Wars film yet; give them time to settle a firm, familiar foundation with the fanbase that they will eventually build off of, in terms of newer storylines for future films.

Pieter Boelen got a reaction from 1977 in Michael Giacchino's Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016) - 2022 Expanded Edition now available
Bizarre how no real "haters" and few real "lovers" can lead to such nasty sounding discussions as occur around Giacchino's name.
Seriously, I get the impression I am more positive on him than most here, but really he's not in my top ten composers either.

But all these heated discussions on him... To say it is painful to read would be an understatement!
It really gives me zero pleasure (and a lot of the opposite) whenever I see it crop up yet again.
It's really over the top and I wished people here could find something more positive and interesting to talk about instead.
    Pretty please...?

Asking Giacchino haters not to hate on Giacchino scores is like asking the sun not to burn.

I was not thrilled with GALAVANT. No score on it. Album too long. But several of the songs were OK.

Anyways, I hope -- like I've always hoped -- that Menken will break out of the Disney/musical theatre mold and compose something for, say, an action movie or thriller or straightforward live action drama at some point. Not just the same old, or reworkings of his old material, as much as I adore it.

Pieter Boelen reacted to Max in Michael Giacchino's SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING (2017)
I really enjoyed Iron Man's theme--my favorite of the three (?) Iron Man themes so far, honestly. I thought it sounded heroic, sort of how Peter would think of Mr. Stark, and I really like its appearances the "Ferry Dust Up" and "A Stark Contrast" tracks. I think it has a lot of potential, and I'd love to hear Giacchino get to use it again in the future.

There's a great interview here about Giacchino's work on this and War for the Planet of the Apes, and he confirms that his Spider-Man theme is supposed to be young and clumsy like the character, which is why I think I like it more than the other Spider-Man themes (though, admittedly, I'm not 100% sure what part of Elfman's main titles is his main theme, even after several listens).

What I like about Giacchino's Marvel scores (that other people might not like so much) is that his themes aren't just heroic fanfares. Spider-Man's theme is clumsy and Doctor Strange's theme is kind of sad, but I think both themes reflect their characters well (and I still think that both themes receive pretty heroic renditions in their respective scores). Iron Man's theme sounds the most heroic to me, but that's also how Peter imagines Iron Man, so it's still fitting to the character in a way. And I think the other themes in both scores fit their films just fine. The Ancient One's theme is very mystic and is probably my favorite from Doctor Strange, and while both films' love themes appear only briefly in the films/scores themselves, I really like their longer renditions in the end credits. I think Vulture's theme and the music in his scenes (such as "Fly-By-Night Operation") do a good job capturing the "assembled" nature of the character--combinations of different weapons and machines from different previous villains--and I like the dark choral writing for Kaecilius. It might not be the most distinctive theme in that score, but Kaecilius also isn't the most distinctive villain, so I can forgive Giacchino for that... But overall, I like that Giacchino's themes reflect the nature of their characters, even if that doesn't lend itself to the most heroic music ever written.

So anyway, to summarize: A Giacchino fan is happy with Giacchino.

It makes sense though, and works well enough, showing that the case is not done as simply as you'd wish. It's series three that falls short by (rightfully) introducing a wholly new case but still keeping all the old characters and plot strains around. Still entertaining enough, though nowhere near the first (and second).

Pieter Boelen reacted to ocelot in Alan Silvestri replaces John Williams for READY PLAYER ONE
With Williams doing the Stars Wars movies, it makes sense that he wants a change of pace for his other composing duties in between. Ready Player One might take too much out of him being in the same genre as SW. I'm happy with the replacement. Silvestri really hasn't been getting enough lately. As for Williams handing sketches to Silvestri? Why? It's not as if Silvestri is a bad composer who cannot come up with his own music and frankly, it would be a slap in the face. If Silvestri asks for them, then fine, but otherwise, give the man the respect to compose his own score. We aren't talking about some Hans Zimmer hack here. This guy has the chops!

Man, its hard to read through these threads and the IQ 200 level of sarcasm here.

my humble thought, can't wait!, great for Silvestri! he's been out for long time and needs a major comeback. Couldn't be any better.
