This is probably the pre-eminent place for discussion of Shore's Middle-earth music online,* and yet its frequently inhabited by about what, 20 posters max? I know there's a wider fanbase but even so it's still quite niche, much more so for the Hobbit scores. Even on TORN there were many commenting that Shore's music for The Hobbit wasn't as good as LOTR, and relatively few vehemently defending it, while awareness of the themes and such was often lacking. Maybe there's other music forums where Shore's Hobbit scores are held in such high regard, I don't know. But I can't help but feel you're being a tad melodramatic here. The general consensus is positive, which I think is fair, as we've agreed - but I'm not sure if anyone suggested earth-shattering. You're just trying to be different and edgy again aren't you?

    * To my knowledge. If there's a better place please point me in that direction, as I hate you all and would happily move to greener pastures

The Hobbit scores are easily among the best film scores of the 2010s.

The LOTR scores are the best of all time so everything falls short against it.

I will defend Finn's song until the grave - Shore would have only ruined it had he been involved.

I notice you've become much more antagonistic since you've got that Sword of Doom pic in your signature. I suggest you go back to the Bushido code book and learn the true ways of the Samurai. You can have mine if you wish.

Obviously erect. Shore's music excites them.

I had custom covers commissioned from Alan Lee. Unfortunately I don't have any form of camera so you'll never see them, and so will just have to take my word for it.

So we should direct our flaming torches and pitchforks at Warner's doors again?

Both books are essentially done. On Impossible Silence, we wrapped up editing last spring and completed music example engraving this summer. We are now finalizing end notes (which is no small task as there are easily a thousand). Layout will go quickly as this book is primarily text.

Hobbit is written and assembled in a temp layout (and has been for some time), but won't go to final proofing/layout until the studio gives the go-ahead.

Well you don't have to love every single moment of a film. And that's what, about 5 seconds? Can't say it ever bothered me.

Well it's not just that. How many well known, older actors, especially those we've been discussing, would be willing to spend a couple years in NZ, plus pick ups, doing this? And as you said, they would not be as easily corralled as unknown actors, and would be making demands about the number of lines they got, etc. Not to mention their salary would be much higher.

These are just fantasy lists, and would never have had any realistic chance of happening, even if Jackson wanted to go that route. At best you get an Ian McShane as Thorin and maybe one or two other name actors.

So Conrad and his cronies will be in attendance, and Shore gets his long-sought revenge by blowing them to bits. Should be a wonderful end to a magnificent evening.

When it all boils down to it I don't think people have the right to overrule the film maker and release a "supposedly" superior version.

You are taking the work of another director, changing it and then taking credit for something you were no part off.

Now if its for personal viewing, thats fine. Not unlike making your own version of a CD. Changing the order, ommiting a song or two you don't care for.

But to then actually release it points to an arrogance I cannot relate too.

I'm sorry, but if you move hell just to insert a piece of music that wasn't intended there, to replace music that is a development of the music you edit in there, and make noticeable edits ... no. You're just plain stupid.

And if you don't like Sons Of Durin, there is no helping you anyway.

I just don't get fan edits. I mean, sure, I can see why someone would make one but I can't see why anybody would want to watch a fan edit done by a random stranger.

I actually rewatched the EE of Unexpected Journey last night and it was lots of fun even if it has a few (I would consider minor) problems. I'll take the worst of PJs Middle-earth over Captian America 25 or Thor 7 any day.

I'm still convinced the idiotic Strider mention stunk of studio insistence, just incase they feel like exploring spin-off territory within the next few years.

PJ had an impossible job. He had to retrofit a (arguably weaker) story on to a trio of well made, well loved films.
Against all that, he had to create a sort of continuity through which he could dovetail the new films into the older films. Some of his choices were not good, but I think that that was to do with studio pressures, and not down to his misjudgement.
That the second trilogy (or is that the first?) is as entertaining as it is, is almost miraculous, given the monumental scrutiny he was under.
THE HOBBIT may not be THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK, but it certainly ain't INDIANA FUCKING JONES AND THE FUCKING KINGDOM OF THE BOLLOCKING CRYSTAL ARSEING SKULL, neither!

I think we're just going to have to accept that these are gone and never coming back.

I feel for those who don't have them, but tough shit. I cuddle up next to mine every night. They're more important to me than family now.
