Look, Elfman might be right in saying that in the movies, his is the only real Batman Theme, but he shouldn't ignore what Zimmer and others have written in this Universe. Zimmer did write something for Superman at least and that should have been used. This is it's own particular universe and should be respected as such, regardless of whether me or you like the music or not. Other's seem to love and respond to it and that's what they want in these bunch of movies.

The day Hans Zimmer turned John Williams into ‘Christmas sounds’…
ocelot replied to Sandor's topic in JOHN WILLIAMS
from what I understand, wasn't it only the first part of trumpet solo from William's Superman theme that is used, not the actual theme itself? I could be wrong, but that's what I was told. Also, it's not just the change it tone of the music that was a problem, but DC changed the whole tone of the DC universe to match Marvel's. Batman became more jokey, the banter was more light, the EMOne of the whole franchise taken away. Bringing in Joss Whedon was to change Snyder's tone and so much was reshot. So maybe it's a reaction to all of it. Now having said that, Elfman could have kept all the existing themes and layered in the old ones. As much as I absolutely love Williams Superman Theme I can't even imagine it in this universe. It's just too hokey for this. Even I, who does not like this particular DC film music sound, would say, no, don't use that theme, it just won't fit, it'll be laughable in context. -
I did, but then again, what did I not mention, lol

OMG Pride and Prejudice! lol,I love that mini Series As for my thoughts on the Post score..... I can't wait for TLJ!!!!

Yes but the genius of Williams is what he does around that pedal point, right? Like classical composers before him. It's great to have the bass instruments plugging away on one note while the rest of the orchestra goes in and out of harmony with that, but in an orchestral interesting way that challenges the listener and players alike. Pedal Notes are an awesome tool, but not when there's nothing else to juxtapose against it. That's the difference that I see here. Anyway for info on some of the score, a friend of mine, Roberto Sorentino, was one of the Cellists on the recording (he's 4th chair in the RPO). He used some insane amount of cell and Basses to record the samples of the repeated notes. I want to say 26/27 or so of each, but I will check. They had scoring sessions with them to record the samples and then they used the samples in the studio to do the score. I do love what that other composer on the CD did with Elgar's "Nimrod" from his Enigma Variations. Very effective there. As for me being a dick, I didn't mean to be, just giving my opinion. Maybe it's hard to judge how someone is saying something when it's typed out. But I'll accept the dick comment. I mean, I love dicks anyway, lol The drums are sampled library loops, there are extensive libraries out there with a shit ton of loops you can use and add on to. The strings were samples that were specifically recorded for the film and which they can then use for other projects of course. Shouldn't we all....

Hey like it or not, samples is the way forward these days. Studios don't want to pay for full orchestra unless it's the bigger movies and even then it's struggle to get them to pay. I am not judging him on using samples. But write something while you use the samples. Write around it. Write something simple but interesting. Not one note... I have Zimmer Soundtracks (lets be honest though, who knows who wrote what in them, lol) But I own them. I like some of his factory's work. As for the person who said I am self important and plugging myself or something and that I don't have a studio at home because I am a big shot or whatever. Lets take it the other way. I don't have a studio at home because I have no room for a studio in my house. It's not because I am some big shot. It's because at home I just have my piano, and even that is in my living/dining room and until this TV project I have never had need of a studio, all my writing is pencil to paper and then I orchestrate into Finale. I like doing everything myself. Plugging myself, well, lets see. This is my job, I'm a small fry in Hollywood but I am proud of everything I do. If I didn't plug myself who will? Isn't that the point though? To learn to be proud enough of your work to share it? No matter who is going to say what about it? There are those people who will hate me and those who will like me. Same with what I write. But I'm OK with that.

Wait because you think the studio I go to write the tv show is in my house? lol. I have a piano, pencil and paper here as most of my commissions are for full orchestra

I think it's better for Williams to do Star Wars 8 and 9 and go somewhere really different musically between which is The Papers. Personally and musically I would prefer RPO, but at his age (and hopefully there are tons more scores from him) I'd rather he concentrate his adventure scoring on Star Wars so he has his legacy of 1 through 9. Here's to hoping. And bring on Silvestri into the Star Wars fold on the stand alones.
-
I'm hoping that his decision to leave RPO is so that he can do these last two Star Wars. The Papers is such a different mindset compositionally that it's fine to go between SW 8 and 9. He's done with scoring 8, so now to The Papers and then hopefully 9.

Let me ask you this. What do you not believe? That these are samples that require one finger? We just used them on the first episode of Netflix's upcoming Medinah, same loop and string figures. Hey, I'll take that as a compliment because if you were trying to insult what I do for a living, it's never gonna work I love what I do and I know what I can do. But thank you. You are right in that I have influences just like any other composer. And thanks for promoting my piece. Very nice of you, heh.
-
Because the simple truth is I can back up my words by my actual work. You don't want to hear it, then that's your call, but that is how I am backing up what I am saying, lol. How do you not understand that? I am a working composer. Do you not think that I am backing up what I am saying by saying, go listen to my work? Don't you think that that tells your ears all you need to know? You don't want to then fine, don't. But the proof is in the pudding.
-
Yes you are. I am composing daily, on a tv show, I'm telling you, you can like this if you like, but it's lazy scoring to the upmost degree. I am telling you that these are just samples, nothing else and there's nothing happening around the samples. It's one note. You think I am going to stop working 11/16 hour days to come up with music for you to listen to you have another thing coming. I have another 6 episodes to compose, as long as I am not fired off the project. Now if you want to hear, what I can do, you can do so on YouTube or Soundcloud. If not, no biggy. I can actually compose orchestral music. I can come up with themes, I can do chase scenes. If you think it's old fashioned to actually be able to compose for an orchestra, then that's your right. Music is subjective. But I am not about to go to the studio and come up with a silly 10 minute nonsensical piece for you or anyone else. Ask anyone who can compose if there is anything more than samples and one note in this. See what you get. Again, go online, youtube, put in Wael Binali. You want a simple piece, go for Let The Games Begin, you want a more orchestral piece go for Earth. Knock yourself out!
-
I just did a whole episode of a tv show dude, I don't need to show you anything. You can look up my stuff online, just type in my name, are you serious with this shit? you act as if I am some idiot person who has never composed a thing. Just go on YouTube, type in my name, you can see videos of orchestras playing my shit LOL
-
You are obviously talking about me here. So what you are telling me is that 1. I cannot write music which I can guarantee you is a pile of crap on your part and 2. I am ignoring reality? I have those samples. It's one note. It IS extremely lazy scoring. Interesting. You went for a run. So because I don't like it I sit on my couch and I'm a lazy fat git. So 5 days a week in the gym, 4 days jumping my horse and 3 days of bootcamp in each week is laziness. Hope you had a nice run, lol WTF Agreed, it might work well in the movie.
-
It's not about liking or not liking this crap. Music is subjective and you can like and listen to whatever you want to. I have crap I listen to. But every single person in this forum can do this track. One finger down on the keyboard for the drum loop, and it is a drum loop because I have it and I have used it. One finger down on the repeating note. You put your finger down and it repeats at the exact tempo you are in. You have to do nothing, and one finger down for the other sounds that you are bending. IE: LAZY LAZY LAZY!!! It's fine to use samples and loops, but you still should write music around it, through it, on top of it, even if you are keeping it simple. This can be done by anyone, without any knowledge of music. You don't need to know one instrument or be able to read music. This track literally takes 10 minutes of your time at best to do. That's it.

What the hell is this crap? Are we just putting one finger down on the keyboard and people are calling this intense and amazing? This is pure SHITE!!!!!

Alan Silvestri replaces John Williams for READY PLAYER ONE
ocelot replied to Jay's topic in JOHN WILLIAMS
Don't we all.... However, on a separate CD Yes and if I had to choose, I would prefer he step down from RPO than Star Wars 9! Also, TLJ scoring sessions are completely done. The last one was 2 weeks ago. You know speaking of Silvestri taking over from Williams on RPO. Why did they not get him for the Star Wars stand alone? Perfect choice! -
Alan Silvestri replaces John Williams for READY PLAYER ONE
ocelot replied to Jay's topic in JOHN WILLIAMS
With Williams doing the Stars Wars movies, it makes sense that he wants a change of pace for his other composing duties in between. Ready Player One might take too much out of him being in the same genre as SW. I'm happy with the replacement. Silvestri really hasn't been getting enough lately. As for Williams handing sketches to Silvestri? Why? It's not as if Silvestri is a bad composer who cannot come up with his own music and frankly, it would be a slap in the face. If Silvestri asks for them, then fine, but otherwise, give the man the respect to compose his own score. We aren't talking about some Hans Zimmer hack here. This guy has the chops! -
If she's human....

Another Last Jedi scoring session: Mark Hamill and Laura Dern visit
ocelot replied to mrbellamy's topic in JOHN WILLIAMS
poo on you! See I'm more than OK listening to the score first because whether I go into the film having listened to it or not, I still just focus on the music. I have to watch a film at least twice to know what the plot was..... I'm always analyzing what a composer is doing the first time I go in. If I listen to the score fist, I still do that, however, because I know the music I can hopefully get what is happening on screen as well.... lol -
Another Last Jedi scoring session: Mark Hamill and Laura Dern visit
ocelot replied to mrbellamy's topic in JOHN WILLIAMS
Please no guitar a la chase through coruscant. Totally ruins that cue to this day. As for Laura Dern and Mark Hamill at the scoring sessions. That's lovely but doesn't help me hear anything !!! lol -
I think it's because that section really doesn't go into the next in a way that makes sense orchestrally for a concert work.
