Well, Williams doesn't just hit upon a theme. He usually goes through several melodies with the director (and, in this case, with Powell), so that's probably where the plural came from. I do believe they probably hit upon one of these and that became the actual Han Solo theme which is featured in the film.

Ah, then yeah, it could be different versions and they decided on one, or that there are a few themes, can be either. We'll have to wait and see. Either way, I really hope this is a killer score!

Well, JW only wrote the set of new themes and orchestrated them, didn't he?

No, he was supposed to only write some themes but then stepped in and wrote everything you hear on it that is new. Ross only adapted existing material from the first potter movie. All concert arrangements and new underscore was Williams.

Back to Solo (which should be the ONLY topic discussed on this thread), the Powell thread mentions this piece is probably only around 2 minutes.  I wonder if Williams will work up a longer piece for concerts/Hal Leonard.

Btw, "only" means "one," as in "solo," so settle down.

If it is only the 2 minute theme without development he will definitely do a longer version for concerts and then Hal Leonard as well. Can't see him conducting a 2 minute piece at a concert.

I really hope it's a good theme for Han....

    Like Symphonia Of London?

Similar but not the same. Sinfonia of London is contracted by someone else. Isobel Griffiths draws from the LSO first, and then other huge orchestras.

Just saw Avengers IW again. I absolutely love the score. Wish there were more woodwinds but that is my only critique. He played the drama beautifully throughout! Now I can't wait to hear John Powell's score to Solo. Another fantastic orchestral composer. Maybe there's a comeback about to happen!

Not below him, I just find it unlikely that he'd use another composer's theme for a character in one of his Star Wars scores.

Why not, If it fits the scene, use it. I always bash on composers when they take over a Williams franchise and don't use the appropriate themes, it has to go both ways!

Yeah, Powell has a thing for holst. Perhaps you have heard this cue, but yeah, i just share it anyway:

hahaha, total Jupiter inspiration to the max :) There's also Walton in there for sure!

  5. I'm so happy Powell is doing this score. Love the clip and was executed from the get go with him doing it. Can't wait to hear the whole score! Just the way his music comes out of Williams seamlessly is fantastic! Also loved Silvestri in Infinity War!

The NERVE of them! I mean, who do they think they are?

To post here, once must renounce ALL other Hollywood composers, for they are talentless, popmusik dilettantes, who aren't beholden to a staid, antiquated, formalist idea of the perfect musikkomposition!

    Heil Williams!

Touché! Didn't quite come out how I meant to say it but I LOVE your post, almost spat out my tea so I am definitely not changing mine LOL

Exactly. He's not like some other"unnamed" hack jobs who can't orchestrate or how to actually write for an orchestra or how to write orchestrally to start with. How a base line related to the melody, how a counter melody is placed. How to change chords orchestrally and not in a banal pop way that makes no sense musically at all. I am saddened that people think some other composers are geniuses. It's like how some people think Britney and Kanye are geniuses, lol. WHATEVER!

Williams is one of the only composers left in film who actually knows the orchestra and writes for the orchestra. Or I should say, one of the few BIG composers that are known. I'm sure there are others out there, they just are not known and Hollywood right now does not want that sound or that finesse in scoring.

  8. Powell is a good ORCHESTRAL composer, so I believe he will hopefully not only deliver a good score but do justice to any existing material he uses.

Did he challenge Don Davis to a sword duel after JP3?

Ha! That was actually one instance where he was extremely upset.....

Though for all we know, "Han Solo Theme by John Williams" could just mean he scribbled something on a scrap of toilet paper and tossed it at Powell then called it a day.

Highly doubt that considering he is such a control freak when it comes to his music and his orchestrations and them development not to mention chord progressions. He's had it out with other composers who have messed up with his themes in certain franchises like Jurassic Park and Harry Potter....

Does that mean the LSO are the orchestra?

No it's Isobel Griffith who got the players together for this. It's not the LSO. Mind you I'm not sure if they are an orchestra on to themselves or if it's all freelance and therefor there could be people from many orchestras including the LSO in there.

  11. You guys are crazy, but you know, we all love different things and that's cool of course :) To me the music when they go into dream land is just stunning. The main theme has a little Tchaikovsky feel to it and To Giant Country and Frollick are so much fun. He was on a completely different trip writing this and it was nice to hear. The movie itself is charming. The only thing I would have done different is had more of an actual fight with the giants at the end. seemed too easy. Other than that, Mark Rylance has to be one of the best actors working today. And we get the brilliant Penelope Wilton in there too.

I hope this access to the scores will finally debunk the idea that ‘Williams doesn’t really write his music all by himself’ which I still often hear in the academic music world.

LOL, that is laughably not true heh
