(Here we go again) Your favorite Star Wars score to date
ocelot replied to Chris ChrusherComix's topic in General Discussion
1. TPM 2. TESB 3. ANH 4. AOTC 5. ROTJ Although there are great parts in all of them! -
Does anyone know how the scoring is going? Has Williams done his 40 minutes and themes? Was there a deadline for his work?

So seriously, what's up with all the Jaded folks here?
ocelot replied to Beowulf's topic in General Discussion
Wait a minute... Are we talking about films or John Williams? I'm 34, as for the films, the original trillogy is much better. As for the music, I think John Williams is exceding himself at the moment. TPM happens to be my favorite score of the 5 so far, so I don't know where that puts me? (I'll have no comments from you know who!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) I don't think I'm a pompous ass or anything, but I do have my views on things + like some of the others I am a composer and I work in the industry, so I can be a little bias sometimes because of that... If I appeared an arogant .... I am sorry. (But I still say the last 2 films were pathetic at best sometimes and mediocre at others) And Ren, you have never been anything but intelligent! You always have something good to say wether it is a critisizm or an encouragement. Thank you! -
OK, I love both scores, although I prefer the music in ET. However, it is the 2 note motif that is the most effective and so my vote to Jaws. Now, Morn, you say that the 2 note motif is the shark?! No no no no, it is your heart beating faster and faster as the shark approaches. It is so clever and a lot of people just link it to the shark, yet it is a lot more psychological. Think about it...

I saw it last night and there was some scary stuff in there! I mean the whole thing of going out somewhere by yourself, not knowing who is or isn't there, pretending to be brave yet you are about to wet your pants... That stuff is more scary because it happens in real life... It's basic human fright, fight, flight hormone at work!

Who is the greatest conductor in your opinion?
ocelot replied to Beowulf's topic in General Discussion
FIrst of all I agree with the fact that Williams shouldn't really be on this list. He really only conducts his own stuff, plus, as much as I love the guy for his compositions, he really isn't in the realm of these other guys when it comes to conducting. He is very good, don;t get me wrong, but conducting hundreds of different styles of works by hundreds of different composers takes a lot more than just being a good conductor. My vote went to Solti. They are all amazing for various reasons, but there is something about some of Solti's CDs that just grab me. As for classical music verses film music.... John Williams wound NOT be the composer he is if it weren't for classical music. Out of all the composers out there doing film, the reason we like Williams so much is because he can draw from all these classical styles and give us incredible orchestrations, themes, and a tons other things the other "film" composers cannot... So let's not go knocking classical music... It's the basis of what John does! -
Rumors of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix release
ocelot replied to JoeinAR's topic in General Discussion
Who is the younger boy who is all over Harry? You know, the one that worships him like a hero? I think it's him, or what makes a lot of sense... Dumbledore, as much as I hate it to be him -

First off, these books are incredible. Unless you have read them, don't form an opinion. Now as for the next book, I talked to some people in the "know" and they said that the reason she is behind with this book is that she didn't expect theme to get so popular that now she is slightly intimidated with making sure the next one is as good. She's a little scared and because of that, it's not flowing out of her organically like it once was..... read into it what you will... Oh, and I think Hermione and Ron will get together, not Hermione and Harry... It makes a lot more sense. There already a great tension between the firt two, which to me implies that they bicker with each other because they really like each other but won't admit it yet... -
Why should men of any age not wear an earing, a nose ring, a bellybutton ring, or whatever else they feel like wearing. I personally don't find it attractive but to each his own. There's nothing wrong with it at all. Now, if Indy was wearing a cock ring, can I say that here? Sometimes I feel like I'm sesame street with some of the guys here, well anyway I said it. So if that was the case and we were going to see it, then no thank you, but otherwise, an earing is fine.

"Signs" blows AOFT and Minority Report AWAY!

He is a good composer. I was going to say something else, but I thought I'd get slammed by some people -
On the whole it was an incredible spectacle. Both Acting and Directing was fantastic. Baz was completely snubbed out of the oscars. How can you nominate that film for best picture without nominating the director. The whole thing was his vision, the two awards were so linked for that film! The singing was great. Please, there are hundreds of claimed pop singers who couldn't hold a tune next to them. They don;t even claim to be singers and they did a fine job! I loved it, one of the best films of that year.... Incidently, who saw Amelie? French film, very funny, great cinematography and acting

There's no piano in the Princess Leia theme, it's a harp. I have the written score to prove it. Unless it is a piano piece, it is harp doing it. banghead -
I am so so sorry!!!!!!!!!!! We have two of each and anytime anything goes wrong I freak out. It's hard to see a pet suffer, they become part of the family and they are so helpless without us in times of need. My thoughts are with you. Take care and all my best!

yes yes yes it's an arpeggio but am I the only one here that knows it is a harp doing it? -
I'm listening right now, it is a little anemic and thin (I should get the Pops version) I like track 4....

I own Jane Eyre, had it for years, but have never listened to it... Is it really that good?

Don't you mean Harp? It's used by tons of classical composers and film composers of old. I do it all the time. It's mostly done on the harp. The only time it is done on the piano is when it's a piano piece. He does it a lot in Schindler's List too, but again, it's harp. It's 90% done with slow pieces. I do it all the time. -
I actually like Horner, but Titanic????? I thought it was an awful score. I was so looking forward to it and the day it came out I rushed and got it, listened to it, listened to it again, and again... and just shook my head. Really! The song is very nice and all, but the score is embarrasing. Here's my list, in no particular order. Aliens, Apollo 13, Braveheart, Legends of the Fall, Willow I also think George Fenton is a better composer than Horner. He can compose circles around him (notes too)

What exactally makes a particular score complex?
ocelot replied to Johnnyecks's topic in General Discussion
Oh I did. It was very old school, but why not. It's the type of film that he can let go and be dramatic and, to use a word, shmaltzy... I had absolutely no problem with it at all. -
Ricard, I knew you were addressing Morn's comment but I was just making sure because you included a quote from me. I do see why Morn doesn't like it though, a lot of my friends hate that score. I was pleasantly surprised by it. I thought it was going to be awful. As I said, two different approaches to superhero scoring... Yet again, it comes down to taste...

It's more believable than Denise Richards as a rocket scientist...... Besides, a good actor should be able to play any part put in front of him. Why have we gotten to the stage when we see a character in a film solely based on looks. In the olden days people judged by the acting, not if the person looks the part. I mean with all the prosthetics and makeup and special effects, all that is covered. His acting is impecable and he could easily tackle the part. Pretty much everything Jude Law has tackled he has done with grace, charm and expertise so judge him on that. I'm sorry, but acting should only be based on your craft, not on your looks. It's a sad day when we just cast people because they look the part. Uuummmmm, I'm not really ranting am I?
