I like the original LSO version most, but when the love theme kicks in I much prefer the superbly brassier rendition as heard on the credits of one of the dvd docs.
TGE - Who's thinking of editing it in later tonight. Anyone tried this themselves?

...as being the greatest working composer alive today? And where does Williams figure? I know there can be a certain snobbery towards him, but surely even amongst the elitists there must be at least some appreciation for his orchestral composition skills?

I wish Alan Menkin would would score more movies, especially live action ones. He has a real gift for catchy melodys and his orchestration is always interesting.

Indians in Superman?
You don't remember the Indian chief Lois interviews?
Neil
I've had to search the depths of my Superman memories for that one. Yeah, I remember it. Did it have deeper significance or something?

You know, people might whistle a tune of Williams, or perhaps they might mention how they liked the music of a particular film.
I've had instances like these many times and I nearly always try to carefully educate them as to just who is responsible for writing all the film music they don't realise they actually know. Its normally met with a sentence that basically means 'Meh'.
But sometimes, just sometimes, a person will question it, show signs of understanding, even appreciation (usually after I've given them the popular score roll out).
My closest friends and family ALL know the name John Williams, purely because I've persistently drilled it into their heads. But the thing is, nearly all of my friends are now avid fans of the man, once realising the effect he had on their individual love of film and even musical tastes.

I wish they had used an updated version of that classic sound effect when the letters transform.
Damn right

There was also more stuff involving the Indians.

The Indians. Yes... I remember them

For the money men, hype cannot come soon enough.

I like these big daft summer movies. Take'em for what they are intend to be - popcorn rollercoaster rides, nothing more.
I'll go see this.

Hans Zimmer.
Before that it was James Horner.
And many years before that it was John Williams.
Really, I must say I'm suprised by this. Are you talking annual gross or up front fee?
-
Surely he must be. I'm talking flat fee here. Royalties are a mere sweet bonus.

come on he is easilly around 5-10 million no problem. he probably clears 1 mil on concert appearances alone a year. 500,000 easy on residuals from tv another 300 from albumbs plus his salary. he is going to donate plenty of his money on his death.
To the City of Prague Philarmonic.
So at last they will have a reason to play things are they were meant to be.
Hmm, I wonder what Williams could do with that orchestra. Could he bring them into line, or are they beyond repair?
We've all heard about how scary he is when he doesn't like the performance. Methinks Johnny should get over there and release any pent up anger he may have. But then again, whats he got to be angry about - he's the greatest, most successful film composer in the world.
Therefore the Prague orchestra will always be shite.

Nothing in a Batman or Spiderman movie will ever be as effective as that.

What I want to know is why are all female Japanese musicians always so fit? Not at all like some of the grocks I had in my music classes.

I've always considered "Fawkes the Phoenix" a waltz. Even though it doesn't have "waltz" in the title, that's my favorite.
I was actually thinking of that too, and it's actually my favorite piece that Williams has ever written.
Fawkes The Phoenix sounds quite generic to me, even 'meh'. I guess this somewhat explains my whole meh attitude towards the Williams Potter scores - they're adequate, but certainly no Empire Strikes Back in terms of sheer melody per-moment, apart from Hedwigs theme, perfect as it is.
I never thought I'd say that about Williams, but I did with Harry Potter.

A whhhaaaaat?
A tiger shark!
You should've known that KM

Probably the Barrel Chase for me too. The music is unbelievably good it this scene. Hmm, was it ever re-recorded with a bigger orchestra?
-
The part in the movie where it plays as Neary is led by the aliens towards the spaceship is one of Williams' most beautiful moments actually and its also one of his own personal favourites.
-
The second part of the the Raiders love theme is a waltz.

Never really listened to it tbh. I've heard its a very good score, but the main theme never really did it for me. Having said that, it suited the movie perfectly, which is what matters most.
