Quintus got a reaction from Brando in John Williams to score Spielberg's next?
Unlike some film music fans, who plan their lives around the availability scores.

I figured someone here would have something to say about Death Becomes Her. I guess not

Quintus reacted to Thor in John Williams to score Spielberg's next?
Arnold died last year, aged 103(!). Amazing genes, all around. Poor John Williams sr. is the odd one out among the four parents, as he only reached 79.

Quintus reacted to bruce marshall in John Williams has never worked with Martin Scorsese or Francis Ford Coppola.
I think FAR AND AWAY was enough Irish for him.

R. Newman or Silvestri would be great.

Spielberg grew up in the Fifties, guys.
He's not exactly Huckleberry Finn.

Really? I'm not being glib, but in what way?
At this stage of JW's career I imagine a mix between Warhorse and BFG, without the horse and the giant.

I say that about superhero movies.

Quintus got a reaction from Bespin in Has Hans Zimmer aged well?
I remember saying years ago in one or two threads that Zimmer's music will age horribly. Like Jean-Michel Jarre.
In some ways, even Vangelis will prove to be more "timeless" than Zimmer's state of the art sound - meaning at the time it was written.

Quintus got a reaction from KK in Which epic sci-fi/fantasy score do you consider the best to listen straight through?
ET is at once personal and enormously epic. That's one part its frickin genius.
Shore's Lord of the Rings is the soundtrack to an entire history of another world.

For me it's a toss up between ET and LotR. More than likely the latter, because the middle of the former is pretty boring (yes LotR has its own king's banquet of languid parts, but come on), but then again ET makes up for it with the greatest final act in the history of film scoring. So it isn't clear cut. But overall, LotR is the greater emotional rollercoaster of the two. For me it's the musical equivalent of a spring morning funeral, a wedding in the afternoon and then a full body Thai massage in the evening, with a happy ending.

My reading up on the subject comes from Laurence Rees' superb book, and its follow up, highly recommended to anyone with an enduring fascination with those dark but still strangely relative times:

Quintus reacted to bruce marshall in Borrowing folk tunes vs borrowing classical compositions
Starting in the 19th century
there began a movement , among classical composers to explore the folk music of their native land. This was inspired by indepedence movements and nationalist sentiment.
It was also musically inspired.
The list of composers is long and extended into the 20th century.
Liszt....Dvorak...Bartok...Vaughan Williams ...Copland..
So, is this practice of ' borrowing' folk melodies fundamentally different from film composers borrowing from the classics; especially ones in public domain?

If you haven't seen it, and can find it, watch the HBO movie Conspiracy with Kenneth Branagh, about the 1942 Wannsee Conference, where Nazi leaders met to debate the various methods of acheiving the "Final Solution". Chilling. Who would have know Stanley Tucci would make such a good Nazi.
And second to both of the books you recommended.

He witnessed a whole of one such execution, fainted on the spot and spent the whole of the next day reeling from it. I believeh used the term "barbaric" to describe it.
I find those sorts of responses - which were inordinately common - fascinating because they show the true tormented nature of the people who do these sorts of things. That there is a glimmer of humanity in them, protesting against their own actions. Fascinating.
