Quintus got a reaction from Ren in What Is The Last Film You Watched? (Older Films)
You missed out Fraggle Rock, I also love Fraggle Rock. And Labyrinth. Basically anything with muppetry really. Are you completely blind in your aloof ambitions? This is the dedicated forum for the most mainstream movie composer and movies in existence. Regardless, that's moving away from the original point, but never mind. Not interested in mud slinging.

Quintus got a reaction from KK in The Hobbit Film Trilogy Thread
The most annoying and frustrating thing about the movie is that it's easily fixable, by a grizzled and disciplined editor. The scenes which make it up are often really good and well done, there's tons to like about the main meat of the work. It just all falls apart at the seams, which feel stitched together in haste, bereft of care and refinement. A really good adventure movie with heart is buried away in there somewhere, by a director too in love with his own indecisive version of the story.
Jackson effectively suffocated his own movie, and the original Tolkien core.

Quintus reacted to Omen II in BBC Proms 2013
The 2013 season of the BBC Proms was announced today and, as ever, there are some great looking concerts to look forward to. The link is here:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/proms
For fim music fans, three concerts in particular stand out. Early in the season there will be another Doctor Who Prom to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the programme's first airing (http://www.bbc.co.uk/proms/whats-on/2013/july-13/14610).
One of the highlights of the season will surely be the Hollywood Rhapsody Prom with the John Wilson Orchestra, with classics from the golden age of Hollywood (http://www.bbc.co.uk/proms/whats-on/2013/august-26/14686). The John Wilson Orchestra proms in the last few years have focused on musicals, but this will be a special treat for anyone who loves those Gerhardt albums of Steiner, Korngold, Waxman and the like. For my money there is no better conductor of golden age film music around today and no better orchestra to play it.
There will also be another Film Music Prom with Keith Lockhart and the BBC Concert Orchestra - I suspect that the chance to hear Valentina Lisitsa playing Addinsell's Warsaw Concerto and Lawrence Power playing Richard Rodney Bennett's Lady Caroline Lamb (perhaps my favourite piece of film music for the viola) will be worth the price of admission alone. The second half will include a couple of selections from our man JW to boot! http://www.bbc.co.uk/proms/whats-on/2013/august-31/14828
It looks as though all three of these will be shown on TV as well, great news for anyone unable to make the concerts in person.

Quintus reacted to BLUMENKOHL in Man Of Steel (2013 Superman reboot directed by Zack Snyder)
Alexcremers,
I don't think anyone wants hyper-saturated and hyper-vibrant Alice in Wonderland colors. It's just the bronze, washed out, over-processed look is just getting tired. As fast as blue-orange is getting tiring. As fast as instagram is getting annoying.

I think we're all well aware this is supposed to be a viral video. But that's a poor one, that's the thing.

I take back what I said about the brunette chic. Thank you for not spoiling it for me.

Quintus got a reaction from Ollie in What Is The Last Score You Listened To? (older scores)
I'm a track man, always have been. I play cues which I have for some reason recently recalled from memory, or because I'm in a particular mood. Sometimes I'll play the same track a number of times in succession, entirely or just parts of it, over and over again, until I've had my fill, both emotionally and analytically. Sometimes a single five minute cue can take me thirty minutes to get through.
On that basis I listen to about three tracks a week.
Driving to and from work is definitely good for extra listening time. The Boston Pops Spiel/Will Collab CE3K concert arrangement is currently the track of the week in that regard.

Quintus reacted to Marcus in Man Of Steel (2013 Superman reboot directed by Zack Snyder)
I think Zimmer has the right idea here. He really isn't a "symphonic" composer, and would be ill equipped to follow in the vein of Williams' scores. But the difference between Zimmer and most other current Hollywood composers, is that Zimmer actually realizes this!
I am all for a non-symphonic MOS score, as long as it is interesting and has integrity in of its own. Actually, pedal-steel guitars and drums could yield a wonderful soundscape. Zimmer is a pop/rock composer that shows a refreshing humility in accepting what his music isn't, which subsequently enables him to pursue goals he can achieve convincingly.
I prefer a real pop score to a fake symphonic one.

Quintus reacted to Uni in Steven Spielberg at the Recording of the Music for Saving Private Ryan
This is just speculation (of course), but I'm guessing this is a place where JW brought the music to a full stop with a slight pause to change gears and head in a different direction—in an entirely different key. His intention in doing so might've been to accentuate the transition. Spielberg then says he wants to connect the two parts, paint straight through the pause so there's no break at all. It makes sense to him and his limited ear; he probably doesn't realize the nature of what he's asking. John likely just did a bit of transposing to connect the two parts and pushed the modulation back a few bars. Nothing too big . . . except you have to wonder if composers in this situation feel any regret about what they're losing. I'm sure by this time Williams is able to shrug it off pretty easily. (Other composers who have a harder time letting go learn what it means to have a score rejected. . . .)

Quintus reacted to Incanus in Analysis - Theme from Jurassic Park
Yet again very interesting and thorough examination of one of the most beloved themes by the Maestro.
And the first appearance of the Dinosaurs theme is indeed one of the major moments in the film itself where the images and the music are a perfect marriage (I could say that about the whole Journey to the Island). The religioso reverence that is depicted by the hymn styled theme not only catches the on screen action, the movement and pacing so well in its majestic slow progression but also Williams does what he often does best, illustrates in an exultant manner the sheer wonder and amazement , which seems to have almost spiritual dimension here. It is also yet again shows the pains and work on Williams' part that he makes it feel so inevitable, like the music is the natural second half of that moment that couldn't exist without it.

I think you read it wrong. Honestly, I think Williams wants to end Steven's life here.

Never seen it before. I think those ones are worth enough to open a new thread. I didn't want to put those in the youtube clips thread, because this is Williams' related and not general discussion. Hope you don't mind.

Quintus reacted to Incanus in Jurassic Park Blu-Rays - John Williams interviews
If you hadn't noticed JW is just a teeny-tiny bit diplomatic in his interviews as is just about everybody else who has a modicum of sense while being interviewed for a documentary like this.
It is quite true that JW's score was tampered surprisingly heavily but I think the film composers have developed a tougher skin and certain acceptance for such things over the years as it is inevitable, the changes, although the amount may vary from film to film. TLW would be just a small harbinger of the SW:TPM and the Prequels in terms of musical butchery.
I remember that one of the orchestrators, Conrad Pope I think, mentioned that Williams was quite sad that e.g. The Hunt was completely replaced in the film. This was reported by composer/conductor/orchestrator and a friend of Pope's William Stromberg on his Facebook page.
I too wish JP scores would receive more in-depth documentaries.

What a sad dickhead with no meaning in his life. With every new account, he slides further down into the pit of lonely despair. I almost feel sorry for him.
