  1. I knew about the High Fells originally being after Rivendell (I guess Edge of the Wild makes that pretty obvious) but for some reason I figured Sauron's big moment would have been a film 2 thing
  2. I agree, which is why I'm kind of trying to make an edit that does that. The problem is that we armchair editors only have the material that got released, which causes big issues with this aim as some things from the 2-movie version (such as an emotionally satisfying end to film 1, which presumably was originally there after the barrel sequence and was sort-of replaced by the dubious additions to Out of the Frying Pan and the Carrock stuff) were jettisoned when the plan changed to three films. (In the version I'm doing, the main storyline in AUJ does finish after the barrel sequence but in order to have a half-decent ending to the film, I've sped up Dol Guldur in order to have Sauron and Gandalf's fight as the final sequence). It's tricky but fun.
  3. For me, ROTK is too great a film with too big an emotional payoff for me to complain about it - unless we're talking about the EE version which has a lot of stupid shit in it. (Skull avalanche, Gandalf losing his staff, making "this army" a repeat, Aragorn beheading the Mouth of Sauron...) OK, Arwen's story and the soap-bubble ghosts are a bit dumb if you think about them but overall I think the TE really works. With the addition of Saruman's death I guess, though I don't miss it too much from the TE.
  4. When TTT CR was released I was 11 and not really bothered about the film scores. By the time I really got into them, I think TTT was already or close to being out of print, though I was in time for FOTR and ROTK. I have mp3 rips of TTT but am hungry for the full package...
  5. That's what's so annoying - you can see that they almost made some (two?) truly excellent films. But they didn't.
  6. Can't agree with you on AUJ film score. Chopped up all over the place, with needless insertions of LOTR music that doesn't even fit thematically, and a complete erasure of some great themes that can be heard on the OST. Although I do agree there are some film cues, notably Eagle Rescue, that sorely need releasing.
  7. I still think we may see CRs, but the reasons for doubting are clear. Yes, the films got the same release formats, but the OSTs were on two discs, not one, greatly reducing the amount of extra material CRs would provide compared with the situation in LOTR (notwithstanding the mess that is the AUJ recordings). Plus, the Hobbit scores have been far less of a popular phenomenon than the LOTR scores. Both of these factors are bound to reduce the market for CRs in comparison with last time around. The format for the LOTR CRs was quite an expensive one to make it seems.
  8. I never post because I never have anything to say but I'm always making edits of LOTR stuff so I thought I could chime in here. I've done a different edit that fulfils a similar purpose for me. I use CR up to the end of Mount Doom but switch to the Rarities (2:44) at that point. Then I let it run all the way to the Destruction of the Ring theme (in fact I edited a few bars out of the choral/cello section because I felt like it went on a bit too long and killed the momentum) but as that climactic moment is fading (i.e. 6:23ish), I actually cut to the CR right around 0:30 of The Crack of Doom, which works surprisingly well, and let it run from there. So we've basically done the same thing in a different order (though admittedly I've lost 30 seconds of The Crack of Doom). Your way sounds interesting too! Might have to try that out. Funny you should ask The thing I'm most pleased with is my amalgamation of Prologue material, which I did partly because I love the feel of the Rarities/OST version but sorely miss the History of the Ring theme. It's been interesting to read the discussion over in the other thread about this piece - I assumed that first bit of the OST from 1:27 that wasn't in Rarites was an alternate to the Gondor stuff (which I don't really think fits personally, but I might have to rethink if we ever get the full take). Not following Jay's advice to prefer the OST to TRA, I did something like: TRA 0:00-0:49 FOTR-CR 0:37-1:25 (slipping in the History of the Ring - a tricky edit but it worked!) TRA 0:57-1:54 FOTR-OST 1:27-2:06 (replacing the Gondor stuff with the bit that wasn't actually an alternate...) FOTR-CR 2:40-2:49 (artificially segueing the OST material into Footsteps of Doom or whatever the drums motif is called) TRA 2:19-4:24 (including the reprisal of the opening section with added cello) FOTR-CR 4:05-End (from the re-appearance of the History theme - works really well as a segue! - and including all the Isildur stuff etc) It ends up 8:37 long and is currently my preferred intro to Middle Earth. I might have to reconsider if/when we get the full take of the Rarities piece... I've done other fun edits where I've included alternates alongside each other. I don't remember what they all are because I'm so used to hearing them that way... Things like inserting bits of the OST version of the Fellowship leaving Lorien into the CR material, or pasting a bit of the Rarities version of the Rohirrim leaving Dunharrow into the CR. The entire choral piece from Emyn Muil, only partly represented on the CR, can sit nicely alongside the majority of the film version. Yeah I tried that, definitely doesn't work for me! Me too As an aside, I couldn't really do a lot of my fun edits without the resources I've found through this website. Might as well take this opportunity to say massive thanks to Faleel, Jim Ware, Jay, Bloodboal, etc. for all the cool stuff here. Oh and Doug too of course if he's around
  9. WaterTower have taken down their video of the song for some reason... But obviously the whole world has it now to upload themselves, eg I quite like the song, but the bluesy flattened fifths aren't terribly Middle-earth...
  10. Awesome thread Faleel, thanks for making this Not sure if you're interested in this level of nitpicking but it's 02G2PAL1 as per my game!
  11. Found a converter that can do the TTT video game, but I can't identify any music files in the Third Age game (PS2)...
  12. ^This. Faleel, how do you rip the music files from these games?
  13. Ah, yep, that's the one! Cheers, that's been bugging me for a while
  14. The High Fells. I always thought that the opening to "The Edge of the Wild" sounds just like something out of one of the JW-scored Harry Potter films. Can't remember when it appears in the films though.
