See, that's really fascinating to me, because I find his music to be extremely painful at times, to the point where I actually have to be careful about listening to it. What did he and Muhly say? I can imagine.... -

Unfortunate that my band days were a bit too early for any of his stuff to be on the repertoire. It's funny, we've discussed this before - October is maybe the one piece of his I just can't get fully invested in for whatever reason. I agree Sleep is better as a choral piece but the "What dreams may come..." part starting at 3:11 through to the climax is wonderful here too. -

Very colorful one, that. Great aleatoric textures, and the "storm" is hair-raising live. My favorite I think will always be Sleep, which is the last music I'd ever want to hear if I could control something like that. -

Oh yeah, definitely in the same vein as the wonderful Compass And Guns. Also Any Other Name. -

Same rising harmonies, I, bIII, IV, that Newman uses often. -

Bit too saccharine for many, I've learned, but there's a very special place in my heart for him. Here's one of his more challenging pieces. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sLa8pN7GHhg -

Ha, how do you like that? Everyone's a critic, should have known. I like him too now! Doesn't he have a piece called something like These Premises Are Alarmed? That one is real fun. -

This is really interesting. I've not heard much of Ades' work, for an admittedly unfair reason. He seems to be the go-to example of a "real" composer for people criticizing other, equally talented contemporaries. Must not let that cloud my judgement anymore, as it has nothing to do with the man himself or his work. -

You should. As Romao points out, the film itself is a tad ehhhh, but we all know that doesn't prevent great music from happening. -

Looking forward to it. I first discovered him through his guided tour video of his Journey score. Whitacre shared it on Facebook and I was totally enthralled. -

He's a great composer. Would like to see him get more film opportunities. -
I was reading an old thread on John's skills as a conductor, and figured I'd make a more general one rather than resurrecting it. Living or dead, though it may be more interesting to try and limit answers to those who are still with us. For me, it's Bernstein, von Karajan, Stokowski, Previn, Tilson Thomas, Rattle, and Salonen. Especially Salonen; I think he's my current favorite. His 2008 recording of the complete Firebird with the LA Philharmonic is a revelation, with the most exhilarating reading of the finale I've ever heard. http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLC9F704C53C295917
