Eggers delivers a feverish nightmare that once again explores characters crippled by isolation and madness, this time eschewing New Hampshire for a distinct coastal flavour. But of course, everything is dialled up to the max. Drawing on The VVitch thematically, but heightening everything stylistically, Eggers masterfully lets the chaos unfold on screen. And it looks quite beautiful too. And while I think it's all too self-aware to have the real self-existential dread and terror of Aster's films, its impeccable craftsmanship is perhaps more impressive. Eggers is clearly less interested in the genre he has to sell, and more in the story he's trying to tell.

I’m very happy that Chandos is realeasing a third volume of George Antheil recorded by John Storgards and the BBC Philharmonic.  The first two really made me a big Antheil fan!

I think that there's a solid hour of brilliance in there on a level that Williams had never achieved with the other ones and hasn't matched since. From around the point where Anakin turns to the dark side, it's nonstop operatic drama, epic testosterone-fueled masculinity and tragedy in musical form. It's also married perfectly to the movie itself in a way none of the other scores are since the original, which wasn't nearly as dense. They all have bits that were chopped out or ditched because they were unnecessary/poorly spotted or tracked music but Sith has literally everything in that hour intact. Every moment is scored immaculately, from the Imperial March when Anakin becomes a bad boy, the Force Theme as Obi-Wan and Yoda are kicking the shit out of the clone troopers, the epic chorus for the Emperor, somber strings as Padmé is departing, that badass booming Mustafarian rampage stuff and just...everything. It's better than everything.

I wish to inform you kindly that you are trying to teach hardcore John Williams / film music nerds, many with multi-decade experience, some being musical professionals, trivial, discussed to death observations about obvious inspirations behind some of the most popular moments in his music. Calling Williams a plagiarist or accusing him of low morals or professionalism is a good way to make yourself look foolish around here.

That Reddit must have some policy against new posters or something because my response to that idiocy from this morning is still only visible to me when logged into the account I specifically made to post it.  Guess they're fine with that kind of amateurish dilettante crap but god forbid they don't filter out posts from new accounts.  Anyway it looks like a few of you cleaned up nicely there anyway.  Also Blake Robinson is a stand up guy but trailer music is what it is.

Not worth it.  If I told him that Williams literally writes the short scores out by hand, it wouldn't mean anything to him.  These are the people who, when they find out that *gasp* someone else expands the short scores out into engraved scores/parts, their takeaway is that those people are ghostwriters.

Prisoners. I'd heard very strong word of mouth about this movie, so I expected something very good. It was a well crafted and engrossing abduction thriller, and the gloomy setting and the way the town was filmed was really effective at tapping into the "every parent's worst nightmare" sense of bleak helplessness, at least in the first couple of acts. Unfortunately I thought the resolution and the big reveal brought it down a fair few pegs, as corny Hollywood tropes intruded into proceedings as per the norm, harming the experience a notable amount for my liking. I'd been hoping for something a little nastier as the story climaxed, but little Carrie Anne proved once again that little lost girls don't step into the light that often in Hollywood. 4 out of 5 good not great.

My take on it is that composers know that regardless of how the music is mixed or buried, they still want to put detail in it because a) it's their job, and b) there's a good chance the music will be heard standalone by people who won't have seen the film. An album is the composer's chance to show their stuff.

Kind of sad, that is.

I used to have fun skipping chapters and using my mouse and pointer on my slow 4× DVD-ROM drive on my 1998 Compaq Presario 5260 PC.

Last thing I listened to was a rough read through this morning of a large scale piece I'm working on for alto flute, harp, viola, and bass.  After listening to some students talk at length about their own very innovative works in progress I was feeling like quite a square to be doing something so academic by comparison.  Much to my surprise they found my music engaging and "trippy" so perhaps I've still got it.
 
 

Return of the Jedi is good. A rousing finale with some of the trilogy's most memorable scenes and exchanges. The teddies don't ruin the whole thing for me like they do for others. I'm just not emotionally attached enough to the whole thing to really be bothered.

The Asteroid Field is great but the Coruscant chase is totally ace.  I definitely prefer it to most of his earlier action sequences.  There's an overwhelming sense that the music is just pouring out of him and it is groovy as fuck.
