I've always been a big fan of his second piano concerto after I saw the CSO play it back when I was 19.

Check out the second movement that starts at 9:40!

Once again must applaud LLL for their efforts at putting definitive presentations of scores out there.  As an enthusiast of this later era Williams they've been especially generous to me.  There is so much material in film music that deserves to be heard but sits in a drawer.  Glad they're making it happen.

Last night's Seoul concert was great. The Lion King suite had so much positive energy, and the band and Hans seemed to be love every single minute on stage. Hans spoke quite a lot between pieces sprinkling anecdotes - one being that he first met the woman who sang "Now We Are Free" when she was 4. Don't recall her name, sorry. It wasn't Lisa Gerrard, the singer on the OST.

The set list was almost identical to the 2017 Prague concert that was released on CD and DVD. The differences were I think Wonder Woman theme "Is She With You" from Superman Vs Batman followed The Man of Steel piece. Also, the short piano introduction of Rain Main segued to Thelma and Louise. I'd love a recording of that version. It featured a guitar solo that is missing if memory serves from the version on the On Wings of Film live CD.

The musicians were just a treat to watch: guitarist Guthrie Govan is perhaps the most technically proficient rock guitarist in the world and while it wasn't his show, he had his moments in the spotlight. And Tina Guo attacked her electric cello all night. Surprised it didn't break in half. Lebo M still has all the vocal chops he displayed decades ago in the original Lion King and The Power of One.

The concert certainly revitalized my interest in his music. I'm not all that familiar with a lot of his more recent scores.I feel motivated to get to know those better. Super Vs Batman and Spiderman 2, and the Blade Runner sequel being some of those. And I just read Dune and its first two sequels for the first time, so I'm quite looking forward to the score.

Troy by Gabriel Yared: While this might sound somewhat old fashioned and classical in tone, it actually is such a terrific full-blooded epic score but it sadly never officially saw the light of day and alas probably won't any time soon. I would love a specialty label release of all the recorded music.

I don't think it's that simple.  Lynch has been quite open about the fact that he follows instinct and subconscious whether or not it serves a particular narrative.  That's his prerogative of course as it's mine to ultimately feel like that's masturbation.

The Asteroid Field is great but the Coruscant chase is totally ace.  I definitely prefer it to most of his earlier action sequences.  There's an overwhelming sense that the music is just pouring out of him and it is groovy as fuck.

I think I know what you mean and I agree.  This is probably just the price of working for Hollywood.  Even a craftsman from beginning to end like Williams has to deliver "the product" in that kind of environment.  And forget about countless others who all share a handful of the same orchestrators which leads to an incredible homogeneity and polished shine on so much of what comes out of this town.  Now contrast this with outsiders like Goldenthal, Shore, Morricone yada yada yada...from them you'll hear something which to me anyway seems far less assembly line produced.

My problem with Lynch, I've discovered after The Return and listening to him speak, is that he violates Hemingway's iceberg theory.  He constructs labyrinthine weirdness, but there's not necessarily anything below the surface holding it together.  I can enjoy weirdness for its own sake to a point but the extent to which he relies on it has become surprisingly offputting for me.

How old are you?  Are you from America?  All due respect but perhaps if you're a younger person who was geographically removed from it it's hard to understand.  I'm pretty far from a flag waving God bless the USA type who will get indignant at the suggestion that it's not a "big deal" but I was blocks away from what was happening in Manhattan, I knew people who died, and you'll have to forgive me if it continues to loom in my life as a "big deal."  Fuck's sake.
