It's a difficult issue to tackle, modern orchestral music has come to a point that anything crazy and 'new' is welcome regardless of its musical value. People can't write anything with a coherent rhythm, harmony or melody as they will be branded 'old fashion'. Who can blame the aspired new composers for writing to what effectively is the only way for them to be accepted in the modern orchestral society? On the other hand they are some wonderful modern composers who even though their work is hard to grasp , they write through a deep thinking process and if you are determined to search through the tones of contemporary stuff you will find that there are some great pieces out there. I also think that some of the great pieces in the history of music were written for ballets and stage productions. Weren't these pieces the soundtrack music of those days? Even symphonies were written to accommodate people's emotions that's why I think some of them have such passion. Today's ballets and stage productions have shifted to the big screen. OK not all composers are great but those who were and are have produced amazing music. It's a shame that the modern orchestral world cannot accept this, they probably feel they are too 'advanced' to pay attention. But discarding melody, rhythm and harmony in the name of musical progress can only lead modern orchestral music to get it self to a dead end in my view.
