  1. My guess is that this version will be one of the tracks, with the string version as the other. Both pieces are titles "With Malice Toward None" in the Hal Leonard Signature Edition published suite.
  2. Aside from Flight to Neverland, the remaining pieces are not publicly available. I would say the best way to try and obtain the scores for the other pieces would be to contact Williams' agency. Not sure what the likelihood of success is but it is certainly worth a shot.
  3. Hey everyone, Not sure how many of you might have previously heard of this, but I just came across a Keith Lockhart-conducted Boston Pops performance of both "Men of Yorktown" from Midway and "Night Journeys" from Dracula. The Midway selection is particularly nice in my opinion, and is extended and revised from a previously known incarnation. The performances were the opening pieces from a recorded concert on WGBH which featured Broadway star Sutton Foster. Probably slipped under our radar since the concert was not intended to highlight John Williams. Even more intriguing is that the concert narrator mentioned that both pieces are being recorded for a future release celebrating John Williams' legacy, so certainly something to look forward to. Link to the channel is below (expand all of the concert links and click on the "Sutton Foster" one). Enjoy! http://www.wgbh.org/programs/The-Boston-Symphony-Orchestra-in-Concert-1641
  4. I've seen the YMF Orchestra perform live once. They are based out of LA and comprised mainly of high school and college music students. The time I saw them, John Williams led them in three pieces, including the world concert premieres of Dartmoor 1912 from War Horse and The Duel from The Adventures of Tintin, so I am inclined to believe that this performance was actually him conducting.
  5. It reminded me a little of War Horse too, and also a little bit of the concert arrangement of Irina's Theme from KOTCS. I like the extended flute cadenza at the end but I miss the extended brass interlude from the Boston Pops recording.
  6. Apologies if this has already been mentioned, but I just stumbled upon this revised version of "The Face of Pan" from Hook and I was wondering if anyone had heard of this new version. According to the description, the performance is from 2013 conducted by Williams himself. I'm personally still trying to wrap my brain around the new orchestration, given that I'm so accustomed to the Boston Pops records version, but I'm giving it several more listens to try and better appreciate it. Interested to hear others' opinions.
  7. I've seen Star Trek, Star Trek Into Darkness, and E.T., all with the San Diego Symphony.
  8. The abbreviation stands for "with woodwinds." If you look at the very first measure of the piece, it identifies the line for the glockenspiel. The instrument hasn't changed - you can tell because the specific instrument is in normal font in the very first measure and the instruction is in italics - it's just that the score is simply indicating that the glockenspiel is supporting the woodwinds at that particular measure. If you look at measure 20, you'll see the exact same "w/Wws" indication for the piano line, so it's clearly not an abbreviation for a specific instrument. The "oaky" woodblock-like sound you think you are hearing is not percussion, but the accented plucking of pizzicato strings.
  9. I've always enjoyed his use of traditional Irish percussion instruments in Far and Away, particularly in The Fighting Donnellys cue. And the percussion section is quite fleshed out in concert version of The Knight Bus from PoA, more so in my opinion than on the OST.
  10. I got to attend a VIP screening of this film last night in Hollywood and I have to say it was thoroughly enjoyable (that's me on the right on the red carpet with a friend of mine). There were many interviews with various film composers and film music experts. No new interview footage with Williams, but they did use a lot of pre-existing interview footage with him talking about his composing process, and a decent segment of the film was centered around his work. There was a also a nice anecdote from James Cameron in the end credits done in memory of the late, great James Horner. The filmmakers did say that the film will be getting its official premiere in the film festival circuit later this year, and hopefully much wider distribution thereafter. It was hard not to disrupt the audience and hum the many musical themes heard throughout the film!
  11. Found this interesting little gem the other day. I wonder if he will make any other arrangements.

  13. He conducted the theme song from "Ted" (Walter Murphy/Seth Macfarlane) at the Hollywood Bowl in 2014, but I doubt that would have ever happened if Seth Macfarlane wasn't the guest performer.
  14. Found a live recording of The Jedi Steps concert version:

  18. Hal Leonard Corporation has posted the movements in the Force Awakens Suite: March of the Resistance Rey's Theme Scherzo for X-Wings The Jedi Steps and Finale It appears there are two performance options for The Jedi Steps, I'm speculating akin to the two different performance options for With Malice Toward None from Lincoln. http://www.halleonard.com/product/viewproduct.action?itemid=4491705&lid=149&keywords=John%20williams%20signature&subsiteid=1&

  20. Got this email from Boston Pops Orchestra today... "Dear Patron, John Williams regretfully has had to cancel his upcoming appearances with the Boston Pops, May 22 and 23, due to a back ailment that requires him to rest and limit travel over the next few weeks. Please note, the program will remain the same. Richard Kaufman will conduct these performances. Among his many accomplishments, Richard Kaufman is the Principal Pops Conductor of the Pacific Symphony, the Pops Conductor Laureate of the Dallas Symphony, and is celebrating his tenth season at the helm of the Chicago Symphony Orchestras film concert series CSO at the Movies. As a friend and colleague of John Williams, Mr. Kaufman has appeared as a violinist on many of Mr. Williamss film sound tracks over the years. Please contact SymphonyCharge at 888-266-1200 with any questions."
