Well I've only listened to "Battle of the Heroes" once (yes I'm bad I know, but I still haven't seen ROTS just yet and I'm saving the music until after). And it wasn't very striking. Hopefully it will improve with time. On the otherhand I adore the Chamber of Secrets theme, a truly wicked, delicious and slightly sinister piece. CYPHER - who should be posting a bit more here than he has of late in just a few more days... 8O

I heard a few tracks of Shore's score on the radio a while back. While it was appetising enough, I confess I was no where near as thrilled by it as you evidently were, Lotman. What I heard had a rather monotonous, droning and depressing sound, which whilst appropriate for those passages of the film, did not result in the most satisfying of listening experiences. Furthermore I'm afraid that I can in no way comment on the technical aspects of the score that you raise. Apologies. CYPHER

I heart Doctor Who. I've been watching the repeats practically every night for one a half years. The storyline they just had on ("The Invasion of Tim"?) was pretty high quality. CYPHER

The Lost World: Jurassic Park would be my pick. As a sequel score it's already got the cards stacked against it, but I very rarely hear this one mentioned, especially with praise. But I love it. I won't gush too much because I've been planning a proper post on this album since I first listened to it about a year ago so I'll save it all for then, if it ever happens. But suffice to say, I think it's a thrilling, invigorating, complex score with some brilliant barnstorming moments and some of Williams' most frightening music as well! CYPHER

I actually think John's "Cello Concerto" is one of his best pieces of music, so no, I don't have much of a problem with it. A piano concerto would be lovely, but basically I'd settle for any other concert music he might like to compose as well - I'm easy! As for creating a symphony of sorts out of existing William's film score cues... An interesting idea, but I don't think it would work too well using excerpts from lots of different films, as in your example, because the styles and instruments used are often so different. Plus I would find it very difficult to divorce the films from each other. I think MSM's approach would yield a better result, however this would probably more correctly be referred to as a 'suite', rather than a 'symphony'. CYPHER

I would recommend the following scores (most on the basis of having heard them in the film, rather than owning the score CD): - Halloween - John Carpenter - Cabin Fever - Angelo Badalamenti and Whatshisface (Nick Barr?) - Hellbound: Hellraiser II - Christopher Young - Jaws - John Williams - The Lost World: Jurassic Park - not strictly a horror movie of course but a few of these cues scare the crap out of me! - Signs - James Newton Howard - Psycho - Bernard Herrmann - Suspiria - Goblyn CYPHER

I'm thinking it has to do with the mild paedophilia (both Harry and young Indy are barely legal in those shots), but hey, leave that up to the mod to decide! CYPHER

Hee hee - this is a great thread. I've been giggling away to myself just now, whilst reading it for the first time. All of my immediate family are familiar with John Williams, but none are particularly interested in him. My Dad listens to a lot of classical music but is generally unwilling to give John Williams' concert material a go. Obviously it's an identity thing just as much as a taste thing and one of these days I'll get him to listen to something like the "Cello concerto" or "Heartwood," but I still don't think he'll like it... My brother thinks he's crap, but he says that just to piss me off - however it's not his cup of tea, which is fine. Some of my friends know I listen to JW, and a lot of them don't, but those who do aren't very judgemental or interested for that matter, which suits me just fine. It's my interest after all, not their's. CYPHER PS - I love all the stuff about the cats not liking JW! Just goes to confirm what I think about cats...
