  1. Well I've only listened to "Battle of the Heroes" once (yes I'm bad I know, but I still haven't seen ROTS just yet and I'm saving the music until after). And it wasn't very striking. Hopefully it will improve with time. On the otherhand I adore the Chamber of Secrets theme, a truly wicked, delicious and slightly sinister piece.

CYPHER - who should be posting a bit more here than he has of late in just a few more days... 8O

  2. I heard a few tracks of Shore's score on the radio a while back. While it was appetising enough, I confess I was no where near as thrilled by it as you evidently were, Lotman. What I heard had a rather monotonous, droning and depressing sound, which whilst appropriate for those passages of the film, did not result in the most satisfying of listening experiences. Furthermore I'm afraid that I can in no way comment on the technical aspects of the score that you raise. Apologies.

  3. I couldn't agree more. The Blue Fairy Theme is one my my favorite John Williams of all time, and the score for A.I. is one of Williams' most accomplished scores to date I feel. Some other underrated score: Far and Away, as Ray has already mentioned. Another one of my favorite Williams scores that is never mentioned is Presumed Innocent. That main theme is absolutely haunting - it gets under my skin in every way. I just love when Williams composes really dark music, but it's rarely discussed here on this Board. The Fury, for instance, is another wonderfully dark score that is shear orchestral power. The LSO re-recording is outstanding. Some other underrated scores are The Lost World, which has already been mentioned, JFK and Sabrina, which I will forever stand by diskolubus on. The main theme is good, but the beauty of that score, as is often the case with Williams scores, is in the secondary themes.

    Ted! :)

Some quality discussion in this thread - its nice to see everyone throwing in their two cents. It's fun to see the commonalities in taste, as well as the discrepancies, plus no one's arguing with each other's choices (yet). :ola:

  4. And yes, "Profondo Rosso" is "Deep Red"...the film isn't that great, but the main theme is a lot famous. The beginning is similar to "The Exorcist" main theme, with the scary music-box music.

I really want to watch some more Argento movies now. I've been hanging out to see Suspiria for, like, forever!

  5. Well I was wondering if Arthur C. clarke was alive period. I totally forgot that he lived in Sri Lanka.

CYPHER - who has just finished reading his first Clarke novel, Childhood's End which contains a very eerie sequence in which an earthquake deep in the heart of the ocean floor triggers a series of events that results in a.... tsunami hitting an inhabited island. Coincidence or clairvoyance? You decide.

  6. Sorry James, I have no answer to your inquiry (I guess it doesn't help that I've never even heard The Accidental Tourist before, huh?) buuuuuuut I just noticed your awesome avatar! I love Michael Nyman too - we even have a Nyman thread here too. It's called, amazingly enough "Michael Nyman". Why don't you check it out? I'd love to hear your thoughts. :nono:

  7. The Lost World: Jurassic Park would be my pick. As a sequel score it's already got the cards stacked against it, but I very rarely hear this one mentioned, especially with praise. But I love it. I won't gush too much because I've been planning a proper post on this album since I first listened to it about a year ago so I'll save it all for then, if it ever happens. But suffice to say, I think it's a thrilling, invigorating, complex score with some brilliant barnstorming moments and some of Williams' most frightening music as well!

  8. I actually think John's "Cello Concerto" is one of his best pieces of music, so no, I don't have much of a problem with it. :) A piano concerto would be lovely, but basically I'd settle for any other concert music he might like to compose as well - I'm easy!

As for creating a symphony of sorts out of existing William's film score cues... An interesting idea, but I don't think it would work too well using excerpts from lots of different films, as in your example, because the styles and instruments used are often so different. Plus I would find it very difficult to divorce the films from each other. I think MSM's approach would yield a better result, however this would probably more correctly be referred to as a 'suite', rather than a 'symphony'.

  9. LOL This is great! Well done, Romao! :)

I'm intrigued - how can there be an 'official' Spielberg lego figure? Not that it's not a great idea, but there must be a pretty limited market for that, I would've thought? Or are these all fan creations, just like your John Williams??? And if that's not Ren in a bikini or a custom job, I can't believe they made a lego figure of Leia in that ensemble - it does not translate well to a chunky waist and tree trunk legs... :D

  10. It's an Italian band...check out Profondo Rosso, it's their greatest success. I think is pretty famous. It's a Dario Argento film like Suspiria and many other.

Is that Deep Red, Tommy? I've seen that but wasn't very impressed. I've also watched a couple of other Argento movies though, and I like his first couple of slasher flicks. Silly me recommending an Italian filmscore to an Italian! ;)

  11. Hmmm, horror movies. A favourite topic of mine! I would recommend the following scores (most on the basis of having heard them in the film, rather than owning the score CD):

    - Halloween - John Carpenter

    - Cabin Fever - Angelo Badalamenti and Whatshisface (Nick Barr?)

    - Hellbound: Hellraiser II - Christopher Young

    - Jaws - John Williams

    - The Lost World: Jurassic Park - not strictly a horror movie of course but a few of these cues scare the crap out of me!

    - Signs - James Newton Howard

    - Psycho - Bernard Herrmann

    - Suspiria - Goblyn

  12. Hee hee - this is a great thread. I've been giggling away to myself just now, whilst reading it for the first time. :sigh:

All of my immediate family are familiar with John Williams, but none are particularly interested in him. My Dad listens to a lot of classical music but is generally unwilling to give John Williams' concert material a go. Obviously it's an identity thing just as much as a taste thing and one of these days I'll get him to listen to something like the "Cello concerto" or "Heartwood," but I still don't think he'll like it... My brother thinks he's crap, but he says that just to piss me off - however it's not his cup of tea, which is fine.

Some of my friends know I listen to JW, and a lot of them don't, but those who do aren't very judgemental or interested for that matter, which suits me just fine. It's my interest after all, not their's.

PS - I love all the stuff about the cats not liking JW! Just goes to confirm what I think about cats... :)

  13. None. They all involve females.

Ha ha, good call HP. (And Marc, your gif clip's a riot too - there's something a bit homo B&D about TOD LOL).

Nice poll by the way, MaestroJW. Even though I find Marion the most attractive in a tom-boyish, rough and ravishing kind of way, I picked Willie Scott 'cause she's a total crackup and one of the best things about the whole trilogy. :sigh:

  14. I wish I was able to audition; my friends and family all said I look like Malfoy. One of my friends even said I acted like him before she knew me...

You coulda been a contender! I believe you, MM! :sigh:

From what people have said about Tom Cruise in this thread, my opinion of him has grown more positive considerably. For years, I always thought he was a superficial jerk.

Just 'cause a guy likes (or claims to like) soundtracks, doesn't mean he's not still a tool. Listen to Alex on this one - I think he's got Mr. Cruise down to a T.
