  1. So let me get this straight, John Williams contacted this guy through his myspace page??? What makes these rubes think that JW has any time to waste on something as pointless as Myspace?
  2. Do you also want to mention Independence Day, Wild, Wild West, Men In Black, and Men In Black: II on that list? Or do only hate a select few Will Smith movies? I actually liked I, Robot quite a bit. But yeah, most of Will Smith's other movies are very forgettable. What are you trying to imply by your statement Wojo? That in the age of Obama, is it somehow racist not to like Will Smith movies?
  3. I like it. This should be a charter that is posted outside all Classical music-related concerts (including film scores) and audiences should be made explicitly aware of them.
  4. Good to hear he only has a limited role. But you have to admit, the man does a damn good job at what he does (even despite his attitude/treatment of scores). I'd love to hear anything from or even about this score at the moment. Seriously anticipating this one.
  5. That's true. Franz Liszt concerts were known for being "boisterous" - a kind way of putting it. I heard that women went crazy at Liszt concerts and proceeded to throw their pantaloons at him after performances (or was it gloves? Pantaloons sounds much more fun).
  6. Not half as bad as this one: http://br.youtube.com/watch?v=Pd1_kVz4S7U Does any of them care about the music at all? Sheesh, I know someone posting at a website devoted to JW shouldn't really be talking, but: NERDS!!!
  7. People are strange beasts mate - I guess there is no where else better to observe this than at large gatherings like concerts. But you would think the type of people going to these concerts would know better. It also irks me when audiences start clapping before the piece is actually finished. I've noticed this happens a lot with the E.T. Finale especially.
  8. Reminds me of audiences that went to see Frank Sinatra in-concert in his twilight years. Every time an old favorite came up, the crowd would hoot and holler. I wonder what the maestro makes of it?
  9. Just did. The guy has talent, that's for sure.
  10. The Yoda segment was especially humorous!
  11. "If you tell a joke in the forest, but nobody laughs, was it a joke?" - Steven Wright That being said, I could look at your avatar until the end of time.
  12. That was one of the greatest things I have ever seen Wow lol They totally rip off Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit about 6:00 into the clip.
  13. Something tells me that Hitch, like all true artists, was not interested in winning any "award" as a means of validating his art. Besides, we all know the illustrious track-record of the Oscars not awarding the right accolades onto the right people/movies (LOTTR: TROTK winning 'best picture' being the only true exception in recent times).
  14. Honor to Us All has to be one of the most catchiest tunes I've ever heard. The last time I had to actually sit through Mulan while watching it with my neice, I had the song stuck in my head for days afterwards. It's one of those songs that is just well-written, orchestrated, and performed. It is ridiculously catchy. Goldsmith wrote some good stuff, too, of course, but "Honor to Us All" always sticks out in my mind when I think about this film/score. I agree - I guess it follows through with what I mention earlier up in this thread about Chinese music in general. There must be something strangely hypnotic about using the pentatonic scale, and I actually remember reading something about Claude Debussy and how upon hearing Balinese Gamelan music for the first time, he was struck by the sheer simplicity in form and effect of using that scale, since he himself was trained in the Western tradition. He was so impressed that he even started using such conventions in his own music, if I recall correctly. But then again, I'm no musicologist so what do I know!

  16. I've got the Adrian Boult box collection of symphonies and other symphonic works. It's fairly comprehensive and serves the purpose of having the music, but I'm interested in investing in a more crisp and clear collection (performance and recording-wise). RVW is definitely an underrated composer IMO, especially his symphonies.
  17. 4.5 from me - wish there was more material. I must say that I love listening to scores in the Chinese style and idiom, especially when "Western" composers put their take on it. I guess this is evident in that one of my favorite themes/cues used in any film is Short Rounds theme, whereby JW tries his hand at a simple Chinese-inspired melody that is used brilliantly throughout the score and film.
  18. For anything from the Russian repertoire , I prefer Gergiev to be at the helm (preferrably with a Russian Orchestra). This is especially true of pieces from Prokofiev, Shostakovich and Tchaikovsky.
  19. I still watch "Family Guy" and think it is at its best when doing absurd pop culture references and musical numbers. However, it started to lose its shine with me when it [and its creator Seth McFarlane] began to frequently shill for the Democratic Party. In Mr. McFarlane's World, one gets the impression that persons from the American North East Coast represent the ultimate evolution of human beings thus far. Anyone else in the world (especially persons from "Red States") are imbecilic buffoons who can barely regulate their own central nervous system without uttering a cogent thought. Sorry, cheap populism doesn't entertain me.
  20. Instant five. If you disagree with me you can take a long walk off a short shuttle bay.
  21. Excellent video - there has to be a collection of all the PBS recordings JW did with the Boston Pops somewhere? I remember even enjoying the classical repertoire they occasionally had. hi, check my youtube channel ! do a search on the member : martyprod ! lot of Boston pops performance videos that i taped in the 90's. Excellent, just what I asked for! I've now subscribed to your videos
  22. Boldog Újévet! Here's hoping we survive another year on this precarious rock we call home!
