This movie is looking surprisingly good. Almost beyond belief considering what it is.

That scene is the best thing I've seen on TV since Breaking Bad ended. That show is something special; it just sinks its teeth into you.

Man, that sucks. He was a great actor with an equally great body of work. Unexpected and sad.
-
It also accompanies the best section of the movie
I love the music when Peter enters the nursery and sees the mural with the pirates. It's just so absolutely evocative. In that moment, that fantasy world feels infiniteThere's a subdued wistfulness that is unique to the early music. There's a healthy amount of foreshadowing, not least of which the moment you mentioned, but it also captures the gentle tone of the England scenes. Hook is in every way emblematic of childhood and that material invokes a kind of dreaminess that's a tad bittersweet.

Really surprised All Is Lost was not nominated.

It's one of my most listened to scores in recent memory. I was floored that it was as good as it was when I first heard it. I had a cursory knowledge and appreciation of Daft Punk beforehand but they weren't really my thing. After hearing Legacy I have a completely new found admiration for them. I really hope they do another score soon.

Right, but he probably didn't feel that way. Its a matter of perspective. Jackson was blind, and in his blindness, the bloat returned.
What I'm trying to say here is that I hardly think money was what drove PJ to make this a trilogy.
Jackson has always had that issue as a director, though. King Kong showed that by being three hours long. It worked with Lord of the Rings because the material he was working with was already incredibly long, to the point that they had to cut things out of the screenplay. Jackson definitely ought to learn the value of brevity in making movies.

Does anyone think del Toro was smart to distance himself from these films?
I sometimes think they would have turned out better had he made them. They would have at least felt more cohesive and he would not have stretched the material too thin over three long films.

Merry Christmas everyone.

Good question. Both have different feels that have their own strengths. The children's chorus is more traditional and innocent but there is a, well, maturity to the adult chorus that captures another side of the Christmas season, more melancholic. I definitely prefer the adult chorus with "Star of Bethlehem", which is the piece I prefer honestly. I actually like "Christmas Star" more as well, also a more somber piece.

Gravity? Best score?

Loved the film but laughable that the score is considered anything other than serviceable.
I liked it. Haven't heard it on its own though.

All six films... my word that is a lot of hours.

I thought the trailer music sounded distinctive.

The latest episode was very good but it felt like it should have been the season three finale. Like the writers had this plot line that was left dangling and they got it out of the way to move on to other things.

He took his "mystery box" philosophy too far. It's worked in other things but not here.
-
It was really quite good. Brutal though.

Deep fried turkey is like candy. It's awesome.
I can attest to this. But this year I didn't get to have any.

Crap titles, all of them.

Jeremy Soule's score for Skyrim is probably my go-to music for this time of year. Wintery associations are owed partly to the fact that it was released around, and played relentlessly by me during, winter. But there is also something inherently chilly about this music, brilliantly crafted to fit the environment of the game. The whole score is highly recommendable, but as it reaches nearly four hours in length, here are a few specifics.
As soon as I read the thread title Skyrim was the first thing to pop into mind. A great, immersing score. You can see the tundras without ever having played the game.

Looks like a typical, Hollywood epic version of the story. That's not necessarily a bad thing but there were elements in the trailer that were obtrusively cliche. The cinematography was very impressive in the footage, though.
