  1. I don't think Yoda works as a standalone movie. I don't need to see his younger, more rambunctious days. He works as the wise old sage archetype. Han Solo and Boba Fett have potential, however. Although with Solo there is the danger of going into story constructs that we already know about, which was one of the pitfalls of the prequels.
  2. I'm surprised it's going to Abrams since he has Star Trek, but all things considered he is one of the better choices they could have gone with. He's an obvious fan of Star Wars and brought a lot of that to Star Trek (which is probably why it was so accessible). I'm confident he'll do a good job and if Williams doesn't do it I'll be glad to have Giacchino because he was my first choice anyway.
  3. I really enjoyed this movie, but the thing that bothered me the most about it was how the Bond girl (or at least the closest thing to one the movie had) was unceremoniously discarded. I wasn't even sure she had died and kept thinking she would show up again somehow because of how she was being set-up as a character and then abruptly cast aside. Also strange was Bond's reaction, or rather, lack of one. I understand that he is supposed to be a hardened veteran of espionage in the film but to have his only reaction be a quip was tonally inconsistent with the rest of the scene, which was very tense.
  4. It's not the type of movie to usually get nominations, but I figured it would get some technical attention. And it would be deserved. I also think Nolan is long overdue for a Best Director nomination but if he keeps working the way he has been he's bound to get one. Unless the Academy just has something against him.
  5. Unfortunately predictable nominations. The only big surprise to me is to see Amour in the Best Picture category, as it is a foreign art-house film. Looper and The Master were snubbed big time for Original Screenplay and Best Cinematography, respectively. Also sad that The Dark Knight Rises didn't get anything.
  6. No. I actually like a lot of his work, including Dark Knight Rises which I felt used the callbacks to the previous scores appropriately because stylistically the film was meant to be a combination of elements from those movies.
  7. Other than Zimmer, who I think is wrong for Superman, the only thing holding this back for me is Snyder. If it wasn't for him I'd be head over heels with this movie.
  8. Merry Belated Christmas to all. And have a happy new year as well.
  9. There were a few scenes that I thought could have been shorter. A couple of individual shots seemed to drag for me, like the establishing shot of Rivendell that felt to me like it lingered a bit too long. Perhaps this is just splitting hairs, but I do think the movie didn't really need to be as long as it was.
  10. Surprisingly good trailer. The best thing I can say about it is that it doesn't looks very much like a Zach Snyder movie. There are shades of Nolan and even Terrence Malick in there. I remain cautious about the whole thing but this trailer has given me more faith in it.
  11. Notice that Shyamalan's name is nowhere to be found in that trailer.
  12. It's not the content I take issue with. It's the way it's edited.
  13. If the film ends up being too long I won't be surprised. I've felt that way about a lot of Jackson's work, especially King Kong. He got away with it in LOTR because those books were so dense and large in scale that they each required a 3+ hour film. But even there I thought it stretched it unnecessarily in a few places, most notably the ending (or endings) of Return of the King.

Old fashioned 2D and 24fps. I'm not a big fan of 3D. I might see the 48fps version just for curiosity's sake but I'm not really looking forward to it.
  15. I seriously doubt the crossover is happening. Nolan's universe and the Justice League universe are not compatible, that's just the way it is. To bridge them would be undoing what Nolan created with his trilogy.
  16. I was impressed by the samples. You can tell the tone is lighter overall than Lord of the Rings which isn't a surprise. There seem to be more songs which, again, is no surprise. I could only pick out a few recurring themes that weren't originally from Rings.
  17. Yup. It's not exactly love, but enough to see it six times on big screen (including twice in IMAX). It's flawed, but even more unlike a typical blockbuster than TDK. Karol Multiple viewings definitely helps the film, at least for me. It does have a few issues that I would change but there's so much to like about it that it mostly overshadows all of them. I'm not sure that it's more of a subversive blockbuster than Knight was, that movie used some tropes in really unique ways. I can't think of another movie of that nature that has the love interest die and hero essentially lose. However, Rises does provide a concrete ending and that hasn't been attempted before in a superhero saga. Usually these things just go on until they are no longer economically viable. It's very rare for a director to come in and tell a self-contained story based on a character and then walk away. And it's better than Snyder's Watchmen in every conceivable way.
  18. He's absolutely capable of subtlety. There are elements of his performance as Daniel Plainview that are quiet. If he's ever giving a loud performance it's only because it's written that way.
  19. The good thing is that Lucas is no longer in charge and more talented writers and directors can now take a crack at the franchise. Time will have to tell if the new movies are good or not. It can easily go either way. Does Disney have to own everything?
  20. What's the rule on changing your list? Can you do it? How many times?
  21. 1) Hook 2) Empire Strikes Back 3) A.I.: Artificial Intelligence 4) Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade 5) Angela's Ashes 6) Return of the Jedi 7) E.T. 8) Jaws 9) Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind 10) Born on the Fourth of July That was hard. I'm not a big fan of lists like this, honestly. But I did it anyway so there ya go. EDIT: Revised my list a little bit.
  22. As far as time travel goes LOST utilized it in a way that included less plot holes than usually come up because
  23. It's certainly the best scene in the movie. If anything I think it will be remembered as the standout scene in a movie that otherwise didn't live up to its potential at all.
