Same here. Fun stuff - although I'm struck by how the more character-based storytelling in S1 resonates more with me now than it used to, and by how the increasing focus on the Island's mysteries in the later seasons resonates less with me now than it used to. Yeah, I noticed that on my recent rewatch. I honestly think part of that has to do with some of the reveals not ultimately living up to the mysteries that preceded them. But I still think the show was most often at its best when the two halves of the story, the characters and the mythology, were intertwined. One of the major reasons why S5 is my favorite is that it melded the two sides by having the characters actually experience the island's history in real time as opposed to having disconnected info dumps ala "Across the Sea".

Raiders is number one. It is perfect entertainment and the apex of the adventure genre.

Guardians of the Galaxy. The most fun I've had in the theater in years. This was an abnormally good year for summer blockbusters. There were several really good ones.

RIP. His Dr. Hammond from Jurassic Park was such a great character.

A.I. Artificial Intelligence, no question. A true masterpiece with few parallels. -
Your favorite John Williams score of the 90's? CONCLUDED
Red replied to #SnowyVernalSpringsEternal's topic in JOHN WILLIAMS
Hook is probably my favorite JW score of all time, so that one. Angela's Ashes, The Phantom Menace, and Schindler's List would be close behind. Really though the 90's was a great decade. Probably Williams' most varied decade in terms of the litany of smaller scores alongside the big ones. -
The same reason Williams works almost exclusively with Spielberg now, because he's older and that's what he wants to do. It's not a matter of poor reputation or forgotten legacy; you might not be into him but Uematsu is still widely considered to be one of the best in game music, if not the best ever. Maybe he got burned out on the Final Fantasy series or the other big franchises he's done.

I liked it a lot more when I saw it as a kid. There are good elements to it but I don't think it's held up particularly well.

This is absolutely terrible. He was beloved in my household as well as countless others and to have him go in this way is heartbreaking.

Probably Empire Strikes Back. But it's hard to settle on just one given how incredible this decade was. Just looking at that list is crazy. -

I actually quite like it. Though it isn't the most re-listenable score. -

Saving Private Ryan I'd say this is Williams at his most minimalist, in my experience at least. It's almost a collection of horn and string solos/underscore for most of it. Only "Hymn to the Fallen" goes big aurally and occurs more than once and that piece feels more like a bookend than apart of the score proper. -

What Is The Last Score You Listened To? (older scores)
Red replied to Ollie's topic in General Discussion
Yeah, I've been listening to it lately and there's a lot of similarities to A.I. there. It's something of a precursor to that score and some of the choral stuff reminds me of Hook as well. It seems like a transitional score for Williams (as the film was for Spielberg), leaning into the kind of sound he would go for much later and away from the thematically-laden bombast. Having gone through the album a few times now I can only pick out only a couple recurring themes and tonally it ranges from eerie dissonance to heavenly beauty, at times within the same track. -

Skyrim and Journey are totally different animals. The former is, as you said, a completely immersive experience that has almost no equivalent. But Journey is about, well, the journey. It is the experience of going from point a to point b in not necessarily narrative terms but in a very spare, florid audio/visual painting. Almost like a musical without lyrics or any dialogue of any kind and the barest semblance of a plot.

It's a lot more literary in its scope and execution. The Stephen King similarities, particularly with The Stand, were apparent from the get-go with the big ensemble of archetypal characters.

A Guide To Hans Zimmer's "The Dark Knight Rises"
Red replied to Dixon Hill's topic in General Discussion
Really good and thorough analysis. There are several motifs and general textures that are reused from the other films but it is impressive to me how much of the thematic material is new. You never once hear Harvey Dent's theme from Knight for instance and the dedicated themes attached to Bane and Catwoman give the score a uniqueness among the trilogy (not to mention more synth usage). Catwoman's material especially sounds very distinct from everything else in the trilogy's scores, fitting the character.
