I had an interview with Maestro eight years ago. Extremely nice man. During the interview, I asked, among other things, whether he was tempted to write something for a film himself, since his music was used by great directors, such as Kubrick, Scorsese or Wajda.

"I don't want to waste time," he replied. "Besides, it would be a transition to the 'other side', which I don't want to do.

    "Other side?" I asked.

"Look at John Williams. He composes very good music, various symphonies and concertos, he is comprehensively educated, he conducts, but everybody knows him only as a film composer. Similarly Ennio Morricone - even when he writes a mass, it's not as good and known as his film music. I think I'll stay on this side!"

Gnome in Plaid reacted to Edmilson in Howard Shore's King Kong
I guess I understand what Jackson tried to do with his Kong movie. If on LOTR he was informed by the classic epic war movies of both his era and previous ages of cinema, on Kong he was inspired by the classic epic/tragic love stories of the past.

My theory is that with Kong he tried to do a Gone with the Wind, Doctor Zhivago or Titanic type of romance, but between a lady and a giant ape (!), and mixing it with its own sense of pulpy adventure.

The movie is too silly to be a Titanic-like love story, and too serious to be a fun adventure on which peple escape from dinosaurs and a giant gorilla battles three T-Rexes. I guess that explains why the movie is so controversial until this day, and why its box office was less than any of the Middle Earth movies. Kong Skull Island isn't a great movie by any means, but at least it stayed truth to its purpose of just being silly and goofy, instead of trying to win 11 Oscars again.

That said, I myself like AUJ more than Kong. However, I prefer the giant monkey over DOS and BOTFA any day.

Howard Shore's music is as close to a musical expression of my own person as I've ever heard.

    2005 was ridiculous:

    Revenge of the Sith
    Memoirs of a Geisha
    Munich
    War of the Worlds
    Sahara
    Doom
    A History of Violence
    Kingdom of Heaven
The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe
    The Roost
    The Chumscrubber
    King Kong
    Syriana
    Hostage
    The Exorcism of Emily Rose
    Wolf Creek

I'm probably even leaving something out.

I saw The Song of Names a couple days ago and... it's pretty much perfect.  It's going to be really hard for anything (even The Rise of Skywalker) to supplant it as the best score of 2019.

I’m so ready for people to leave this style behind honestly. I get that it’s supposed to sound epic, but it’s just so tired at this point. Orchestral music the way Williams writes is timeless, and this stuff will sound so dated in less than a decade.

This would also sound very bad with an actual orchestra. It’s not really written idiomatically for instruments at all. It’s a pop/rock arrangement of JW’s themes, using virtual orchestral instruments. But that’s the standard sound of this hybrid sort of style.

I wonder if Anne-Sophie was ever a middle school teacher. Sounds like something they'd do. "Put your phone away or I'm making the whole class stay an extra 30 minutes!"

Aren't millenials those people that were born on the early 1990s that today just spent their days arguing about Game of Thrones, MCU movies and Netflix series on Twitter, complaining about adulthood, buying Funkos and remembering their Harry Potter-tinged childhoods?

I was born in 1993, but I sometimes feel very embarassed with my generation's behaviour.

Holy hell this is one fantastic score that I only like more and more as time goes on.  From the old dialogue/score/songs OST to the "Academy Promo" to the Recording Session Leak to this, the score keeps getting longer and better sounding and I've liked every improvement along the way.  This is by far the best sounding version and I just love the narrative flow it has.  It was an interesting choice Mike made to take the electronic cues out of the main program and lump them together at the end. The main program works fine without them, though Marilyn's Nightmare would have not felt out of place had it been in there.  It's easy enough to just have a custom playlist that puts them back in anyway.

This is a game franchise that would have been unknown for me, if it wasn't for the fact that Austin Wintory is the composer.

His scores for the franchise are quite bold and unusual for a Kickstarter-funded tactical role-playing game that takes place in a fictional world inspired by the Norse mithology. They are performed by an orchestra with no string section, just brass, thunderous percussion and woodwinds, besides multiple soloists and vocals.

The music is very engaging and intelectually stimulating. Some of the action music is like Horner's Aliens, Williams' Jurassic Park and The Lost World, and, of course, Goldenthal. And, on the third score, there's a few action tracks that are very War of the Worlds-esque. But, as I said, with no strings, which makes the whole thing very brutal.

It's not easy listening, that's for sure, but it is well composed and well crafted. But avoid the songs, they are very boring.

Like always with Junkie's scores, you get the feeling someone's just learning the rudimentary ropes of music-making along the way. Unsuccessfully.
