Maybe because sets built out of mostly blocks are an easy construction job, lol.

The one movie where they could do all of the scenery in CGI and it would be literally fine... and they build physical sets. Genius.

If that's how Morn felt about Eccleston, he must've LOVED Tennant and Smith  .

I think this was the first time I ever looked at the beginnings of this thread! WOW!

    Hee hee hee.

Anyway, I came here to make everyone feel old in a DIFFERENT way.

At this point the only Doctors I had seen other than Tom Baker were in magazines and The Five Doctors. Here in the States we hadn't even seen the costume yet. I was just taking my first steps into the ridiculousness that is fandom.

I think this is probably right around the fortieth anniversary of my first convention as well! (Yup. April 20–22, 1984!)

    Latest trailer -

Yeah, it looks like a blast ... but my enthusiasm is tempered by how I found the specials to be, and the fact that the first episode is called 'Space Babies' (and seems to feature the Tardis becoming full of talking infants) seems to suggest a continuation of the 'feel' of the Xmas Special. On the other hand, one of the only 2 episodes (out of 8) not written by RTD has been written by Moffat (as we've previously discussed), and that at least gives me hope.

Re the ice-skating ... I'm just glad they'd the good sense to avoid Bond and Bibi banging (although interestingly, Carole Bouquet is only a year older than Lynn-Holly Johnson).

Have never seen that ... surprised that I didn't rent it on VHS back in the day. Even more surprised to hear King Solomon's Mines described as superior ... sure I enjoyed it at the time, but a last-few-years rewatch revealed it to be a shonky Cannon cheapo. Particular 'highlights' were the crane/framework/whatever (that the tribe who hang upside down from trees were ACTUALLY hanging from) being clearly visible in shot and probably the worst giant spider I've ever seen in a film.

This Bond movie surprised me, its kind of a hidden gem, cause it's actually very good, escpecially the action sequences and the tense final castle break-in, despite never being mentioned among the superior entries of the Moore era.

For Your Eyes Only - 007 firmly back on Earth after Moonraker, and we get a superior Moore Bond as a result. Good action sequences, the 'cheesy' humour is kept under control for the most part, silkily urbane villainy from Julian Glover, a great ally in Topol, a beautiful AND believable leading lady in Carole Bouquet and a truly Cold War 'McGuffin' (and speaking of which, the 'That's detente, comrade ... ' ending here is just about perfect).

Drop Dead Gorgeous - blackly funny Nineties mockumentary centred on a small-town teen beauty pageant in Minnesota. Starring Kirstie Alley, Kirsten Dunst, Denise Richards, Amy Adams, Ellen Barkin and Allison Janney.

Life Of Brian - annual Easter rewatch of the Pythons' peerless religious satire. He's not the Messiah ...

Beer isn’t required for this thread but it sure helps. Those are both solid choices.  The 3D presentation of Piranha is a hoot.

Back on the first Saturday night in December I double-billed Hammer's bizarre martial-arts/bloodsuckers mash-up Legend Of The Seven Golden Vampires and the 2010 remake of Piranha, accompanied by beer.

It was the same night as my work Xmas bash, and I maintain that I had a better time at home ... gore, chop-socky, laughs and plenty of tits. What's not to love?

For me it doesn't hit Skyfall's heights, but neither does it drop the ball anywhere near as badly as NTTD ends up doing.

SPECTRE - 'Brofeld', Sam Smith's dirge and the odd piece of illogical plotting aside (Madeline being left to wander off alone after her and 007 get back to London following the destruction of Blofeld's base, for example), fairly solid middle-tier Bond.

Meteor's original SFX director got fired and his work up to then was unusable, so others were brought in to reshoot the sequences with whatever was left in the budget. They were also fired, and again others were brought in to finish the effects with the (now presumably diminished even further) remaining budget cash and with 2 months to go to the release date.

The 'visionaries' line is a nice callback to Connery's 'World domination, same old dream. Our asylums are full of people who think they're Napoleon ... or God' from Dr No.

Bond and a meteor? They already did that, and it apparently didn't turn out too well.

That reminds me, one of the ideas that was mooted for Zorin's eeeevil scheme in AVTAK was him manipulating the course of Halley's Comet.
