It doesn't sound like he approached this one with much enthusiasm. But I can't help but think that his involvement here was to help Melumad get (and keep) the gig.

These Giacchino/Melumad collaborations remind me a great deal of how Lorne Balfe's career kicked off with team Zimmer.

Franglen hasn't impressed me with a single thing so far. It's all been rather anonymous, soulless stuff. But hey -- perhaps this will be it. But JNH would have been the composer casting choice of the millennium. All of academic interest now.

Meh, I was hoping for a big name composer, like Alan Silvestri or JNH.

Actually, Silvestri would be ideal since he collaborated with Cameron. Of all the composers who wrote music for his movies, Silvestri is the only one still alive and working in the industry.

The new trailer doesn't inspire much confidence in this film. Everything looks way too serious and dour for my liking. Everyone standing around delivering dreary, monotonous lines about how serious everything is.

Remember when Bond movies were fun ?

The OST album will be released by Disney Records digitally on Friday, of course

If you mean a physical edition, most new scores of the 2020s won't get physical editions.  If Disney Records was giving this a physical CD, it would have been up for pre-order by now; The only hope of one therefore lies in Intrada wanting to and being allowed to do it.  For vinyl, there's always a chance Disney Records themselves or Mondo could release it down the road, but that might depend on how successful the movie is.

Drawgoon got a reaction from Manakin Skywalker in James Newton Howard - Raya and the Last Dragon (2021)
If there is one thing that seemingly hasn't changed about the composer, it's got to be his fascination for "swimming". I can't recall a single score of his where some Swimming cue was included and it wasn't amongst the highlights.

Quite surprising to learn there is orchestra in there at all. I thought it was going to be plain synthesizers with a few ethnic instruments here and there. Most of the post-production seemingly took place during the pandemic. No way the protocols allowed enough people gathering under the same roof to get that traditional sound going - particularly not the brass and choir folks. Maybe that's what the synthesizers you mentioned are there for.

Doesn't change the vote for me, but THE LAST SAMURAI is an excellent score. One of his best in the new millennium.

If GLADIATOR were to get any proper 'competition' here, you'd have to throw in scores like THE ROCK, CRIMSON TIDE, THE LION KING, INTERSTELLAR, INCEPTION, BEYOND RANGOON, THE THIN RED LINE etc. But then you obviously wouldn't get the 'ancient epic times' aspect covered. You could add PRINCE OF EGYPT, though -- another great one -- but it still wouldn't beat GLADIATOR. It completely rules this particular aspect of Zimmer's sound, and is very high on his list in general.

A KINGDOM OF HEAVEN vs. GLADIATOR duel would have been more tricky. KOH is HGW's shining hour; a masterpiece. Would probably still go to GLADIATOR in the end, but an even match.

Gladiator is fine, and King Arthur has an awesome theme.

But I had to go with The Last Samurai, my favorite Zimmer score and one of the scores that made me a film music fan. It's his masterpiece in my opinion, and should've been nominated for the Oscar in 2003 (replacing Yared's Cold Mountain, of course).

If it appeals to me on both an aesthetic and spiritual level, it's good. If it does that to a degree that makes me return to it very often, it's great.
It's exceptional and sublime if it makes me prattle on in unbearably pretentious and grandiose form on here.

MG is the equivalent of J. J. Abrams: a fan referencing what he loves but without any spark of genius it would need to create something exceptional.
I get that people WANT to like JOHN CARTER (massive Sci-Fi-Comic spectacle) and i give Giacchino that he does some pretty things along the way (the little no-gravity waltz, for example) but the writing spreads thin pretty fast, simple ostinato stuff covered by huge (read: loud) orchestration, simple harmonization covered by huge (read: loud) orchestration and so on. You don't need to be a genius to write this stuff but nowadays, just because film music by and large is even worse, people love that it sounds like a Williams/Goldsmith/Horner/Silvestri score if you hide it behind the movie. On cd it's an entirely different matter.
