The Hal Leonard suite is not John Williams's original.  It was edited and altered from the original.  The wind trills at the start are in Hal Leonard but not the score nor film for example.

Wait, do you mean the trills from bar 6 to 9? I definitely hear those in the recordings...

I was just thinking that in these modern days making an appointment doesn't necessarily mean to show up in person. It could be a telephone talk or mail exchange where you tell what you're after, and then the library can make the necessary copies for you for a given fee. And it might be easier if you make contact through another library where you're already a user.

This is how a lot of research is done in the university archives I work for. A patron will submit a request through email or phone, we pull the material and scan it if it's not done already, then send it to the patron electronically. The problem with Williams's collection is the vast amount of material that will be included. It'll take time (years?) to process, arrange, and catalog before patrons can gain access. Ditization will likely be even further down the road as it's not a high priority for many archives since it can be quite costly.

Regarding copyright, we had a patron recently request a copy of a commencement video produced by the university in 1992. The university still holds the copyright, so we could only give them a copy with the agreement that they would only use it for private, not commercial, use. I'm guessing any copyright claims on Williams's scores might be handled in a similar way by Julliard until the copyright lapses. But then agian film studios might also exercise much tighter control over access to their copyrighted property than my university.

Another bit of difference in the new recording that I was surprised to notice only recently (I didn't when TFA came out) is the two bars at roughly 0:43 - In the LSO recordings (especially the prequels one) the most prominent thing by far is the same-note "dum dadadadaah" in the trombones, where in the new one, this is barely audible, while instead a short repeated-chord-triplet horn figure is very in-your-face here... would be interesting to know if this is just due to different mikeing setup, Dudamels interpretation, or a deliberate changed detail by Williams...

The same can be said about the Empire version. The horns are even more prominent in that one.

Besides, the fact that there are multiple microedits (0:02, 0:16, 0:31) suggest to me that there is something fishy going on here. Particularly the edit at 0:31, you can hear a flute in the high register, but it sounds kinda weird, almost as if we are hearing the very end of a missing woodwind run. Again, this could just be the people behind the trailer editing a piece of stock orchestral sampled music, not necessarily Williams' score for TLJ...if so then it's a very well-programmed piece of stock orchestral sampled music!

I noticed the edit here too, and to me it sounds like the suspended cymbal changes channels during that run, like the editor used a synth cymbal to mask the edit (a common technique). They could have used other samples too to "enhance" the music, like what was done in the first teaser for TFA, when the Main Title plays with an obvious synth bass boost.

I'm still convinced it's Williams/TLJ music that has been tampered with. I'm not eating my hat just yet!

  5. I started off with a pretty pessimistic attitude toward Giacchino's Rogue One, but it grew on me.  Honestly, I've hardly stopped listening since December, although I only listen to about half of the tracks on the album nowadays.  It took me an embarrassingly long time to realize the choral first half of "Hope" is Vader's theme. I really like the new Imperial theme (which probably should've been called Krennic's Theme to separate it from the Imperial March); Jyn's theme is short and sweet but too repetitive and the suite version is not great (ugh, those blaring trumpets...); the Guardian of the Whills suite is one of my favorites.  I'm particularly looking forward to the film's bluray release next week to listen to the full end credits again, although I seem to remember the original Williams material sounding less than decent.  Overall, I quite like it now.

  6. Could the "misstep" with the new Imperial/Krennic theme be that it's in too "peppy" of a key? I don't know much about keys and moods, but what if it were in a different key?  Also, I was listening to the OST again and my brain kept connecting Jyn's Theme with the Imperial/Krennic theme, even though that's obviously not what the music was doing. It was like the Imperial statement could have finished off the statement of Jyn's theme. They both have similar jumps between notes in the first few bars (and so does the Hope Theme for that matter), which is what made me think of the Imperial/Krennic theme being perhaps too sprightly. Or I'm just making connections that aren't actually there...

  7. I've listened to it through once (not having seen the film yet).  It's okay, nothing that great and nothing really disappointing.  I did get bored halfway through though, and didn't get back into it until "The Master Switch." The best bits for me were the reappearances of old themes.  I've had the new Imperial theme stuck in my head since that one "highlights" clip released last week, but the full version is a bit meh.  The other themes aren't bad. I liked Jyn's theme but I can't remember it now...  The "Across the Stars"-like theme I didn't even notice until it's concert suite rendition at the end of the OST.

Maybe I will like it more after I see the film, but I think it'll go the way of Jurassic World (my last Gia score), which I listened to for about a week after seeing that film, but it has been collecting virtual dust in my iTunes library ever since.

In the end, Rogue One for me is  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Not if you don't pay for Prime.

I have Prime but alas, I haven't received notification of its shipment; in fact, the estimated delivery date is the 22nd or 23rd!  I'm crossing my fingers hoping it'll go out tomorrow and just ship really fast...

EDIT: Just noticed in the fine print of their release date delivery policy that they don't offer that for PO Box addresses.  Can't remember what happened with the TFA release, but UPS by default drops our Amazon packages at the PO despite the shipping address being our street address. I've never been able to figure it out (they've only been doing it for a few years now).  Anyway, that may have something to do with it.  Ah well, I'll be content with the Jurassic Park release for the time being.

  9. Apparently Disney has put up the "full"(?) score to the movie here.

The format isn't ideal - you have to manually click thru each track from the beginning to get to where you want from what I can tell - but it's a start. I haven't listened to the entire thing, but there is definitely material here that is not on the OST and vice versa (the Main Title and concert suites are missing, for example). I've only seen the film once, so I have no idea if everything heard in the film is here.

  10. The maximum pleasure in this film is achieved if you have some sort of connection to the original films, but the references to the story between RETURN and AWAKENS isn't really explored much. So yes, I think it can be enjoyed as a stand-alone experience for younger generations -- even if it has a couple of ol' geezers running around.

Good to hear. My date hasn't seen any of the films (*sigh*), so I'm worried he won't get the "full" experience.

  11. The official announcement of the event from StarWars.com suggest it'll be old stuff.

"... Pentatonix will perform the legendary composition with a full symphony orchestra." How can something that hasn't been released yet be legendary?

It might be a cool performance, but don't get your hopes up for anything from TFA. It sounds like nothing more than a "celebration" "honoring" the music of Star Wars.

  12. I'm still planning it out. The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra is having a "Music of Star Wars" concert on Dec. 17th, concluding with enough time to get out of downtown Pittsburgh and to the IMAX theater for the midnight premiere. I'll probably do that, or I'm also interested in that one cinema that's running all six films prior to TFA's premiere. If I go that route, I'm only interested in seeing IV-VI since I've never had the "big screen experience" with them.
