  1. Wonder Woman 1984 had some great moments - Themyscira and 1984 are quite infectious, but the score is a typical RCP/Zimmer product through and through so much so that it all felt predictable. I think a lot of the praise for it is because Zimmer uses an orchestral palette as more of a gimmick - but the score steps in and out of that mode intermittently and without much sense of continuity like a sleepy driver going in and out of sleep:
  2. How is the MCU going to reconcile the X-Men into their universe when one has a completely different tone and centers around the plight of an oppressed people? The two worlds are non-overlapping and to do so would be to cheapen the struggles and identities of the X-Men. I once said that the comical tone of the MCU is a double edged sword - it offers some great levity in bringing these characters to the screen and makes them light entertainment. Yet at the same time, they all feel like cardboard cutouts of their characters, reduced to basic self parody in many cases. WandaVision, aside from the sitcom guise is really hollow. It's nothing beyond its setting, there's nothing beneath the surface - and any serious moments betray the levity of the rest of the MCU.
  3. That wasn't the point - it was to trust in your superiors, and not act the hero when you don't get your way. Poe's actions cost several ships and many lives and put the remnants of the fleet in greater jeopardy. The whole opening was a way to show how cocky Poe was, a great pilot, but cocky nonetheless. I feel the same way about the ST, they dip in both quality and excitement as they go along. The Force Awakens was such a great treat after a decade of little-to-no Star Wars action. The Last Jedi attempted something new, but in doing so made for a disappointing enterprise. The Rise of Skywalker had nowhere else to go after The Last Jedi, both written into a corner and having to wrap up a trilogy pretty much scuppered any real plans for something bigger. Yet, the trilogy isn't without its merits and there are some truly great moments here and there - and of course the scores! I just wish there was one singular vision to this trilogy and it's left me wondering why they wanted three different directors and writers to work on three parts of a trilogy. Clearly there wasn't a great deal of synthesis and coordination. The retaliation against The Last Jedi is unfair with this in mind, Johnson was just doing his thing...
  4. Not every composer has a personal Steven Spielberg to call on them.
  5. I love both, but TLW was a revelatory experience for me as I'd never been much of a fan of that score before. Now, it gets more plays than most scores.
  6. I think Gold had said there wasn't enough new music to justify a release - however around that time, right after series 10 - he had a baby so that slowed any chances of a release to nothing and it's been that way for years now. From Twitter last year: I've loved Gold's scores for the series, and it's clear the more time and access he had to an orchestra, the more he could accomplish. I agree with some of the complaints of it being loud and annoying at times, but I think mostly that comes down to the music as it was edited and mixed into the episodes, with the editors overlaying several tracks to create a nightmare at times. Some of the best work all the revived series is still unreleased, with each episode warranting a one to two disc album with the sheer volume of music there is. I've yet to see another television series with such a devotion to creating a catalog of themes and motifs and in an orchestral/symphonic tradition.
  7. Kraemer's comments are refreshing to hear in what is such a hush industry, and reflective of the state of the entertainment industry at large. Crunch, deadlines and streaming culture have made the business of filmmaking, music making, game making more hurried than usual. I remember when film productions were years long and there was time to make things on a creative impulse and not to meet schedules (granted technology has streamlined things).
  8. No chance in hell will Williams write for Book of Boba - The Rise of Skywalker was a perfect bookend to his Star Wars career. I hope that series is given to some new faces.
  9. These are dangerous times for freedom of expression - authors must now have the same lived experience, be a part of the same culture, religion, ethnicity etc. if they want to write about another culture, race etc. What's sad is the content isn't what's critiqued, you know - the literary value of a story, but instead the identity of the author and what they can and can't write.
  10. I'm wary of them trying to turn HP into something it's not just to cater to the hoardes of ex-GoT viewers. I can't see them doing something new either as they'll want to cash in on the nostalgia for the original characters. Like LotR and Star Wars before it, I fear HP is doomed to live in the past until Rowling commits to a proper sequel book series altogether.
  11. Apart from Eiza Gonzalez, this film looks like a travesty.
  12. Jesus, the credits list is longer the entire tracklist of the album!
  13. I'm not much a fan of this show so far, but I can acknowledge its success critically and through audience reception around the web. Is it slow-paced, though? Each episode feels relatively brusque, like it was over in five minutes with only a handful of things happening.
  14. @Bespin That brings up a great discussion around what scores could've been developed further had the composer been given more time/better spotting. Some of Williams' best themes are criminally underused.
  15. Caught WandaVision the other day - so far it's OK, if anything is praiseworthy, it's how faithful a reproduction it is to the sitcoms of the 50's, with the tropes, sets, effects all largely done in the same vein. Yet, beyond that - and I know it's only two episodes so far - they flew by without anything meaningful happening until the end of the second episode. Some elements reminded me of the film Pleasantville with colour returning with the growth of the characters beyond their scripted, B&W TV lives. Wanda and Vision are perhaps the least interesting MCU characters along with Hawkeye- woefully underdeveloped in their films to the point Thanos's quip in Endgame is kind of a meta jab at how bland and forgettable Wanda is. Hopefully this show can retroactively correct this and give these characters a fair go, and to be honest, how could they compete in an Avengers film with fifty characters all struggling for equal screen time?
  16. ESB - Just for the sheer inventiveness of the three major new themes! I also love the Rebel Fleet part with that tentative statement of the Force Theme and those gorgeous strings underneath @0:42-0:47 - so warm and nostalgic: TFA is a close second much for the same reasons - showcasing the major new themes and it has this energy to it that says 'Star Wars is back!'
  17. What's the difference between a CD and a CD-R?
  18. As a collector, the physical package, the design and phenomenological aspect of reading the liner notes and tracklist is why I prefer CDs. Nowadays, because of the decline of sales and manufacturing to be usurped by the backwards technology of vinyl, I'm forced to buy digital scores which is very disappointing. It's almost the equivalent of what Kindle and e-books are to real books.
  19. I think the BBC will play it safe, and return to what sells.
  20. Lethal Weapon: Help! I've Fallen and I Can't Get Up!
