RICHARDSTRAUSS68 got a reaction from crumbs in James Horner's TITANIC (2017 4CD expanded edition from La-La Land Records)
Okay so you guys are probably going to think what the hell about this but hear me out haha.
Up until today days ago I literally gave no fucks about Titanic's score I had seen the movie once and thought it was okay. Also never bought or listened to the music let alone "My Heart will go on'. I heard about this release because of Close Encounters and bought that.
But as an early christmas gift someone got me the 4 CD set and today I stuck it in and I have been addicted it 2-1/2 miles down, rose, Lovejoy chases Jack and Rose , and many others I love. I felt so stupid for never giving this score a proper chance. I Have it on repeat like my god I was dumb

Nice! I am starting to get tired of Star Wars re issues though maybe if we got a good sounding ROTJ.
I hope it is CLose Encounters he is talking about, I was listening to the SACD today and was thinking about it again haha.

Rose's theme makes more sense once you see the film. Her character is super optimistic and lovey so the theme fits her.

RICHARDSTRAUSS68 reacted to Ludwig in John Williams's most transcending/sophisticated harmonies?
In honor of the upcoming E.T. release, I'll suggest the film's opening chord, a reduction of which shown in the box below. While this is a chord of only four different notes, I'd say it still qualifies as a sophisticated harmony. The top three notes of the box make up a major chord - there's certainly nothing special about that. But that major chord is pitted against a bass of C naturals, which are entirely foreign to the chord. In such a low register, these C naturals demand to be heard as something stable. In other words, even though it totally disagrees with the major chord above it, the fact that it's in the deep bass makes it sound like an eerie tonic, or home base if you will, rather than a dissonance.
At the same time, the E.T. motif, which appears overtop the chord in the example, has already sounded once all alone and clearly makes A the tonic. So once the chord enters, we have a tug-of-war between two different tonics - A and C. The C is so unexpected that is sounds like it's literally "from another world" and the conflict brings an immediate sense of tension and mystery to the scene.
Interestingly, the original score shows that the chord was to enter simultaneously with the second statement of the E.T. motif, where the melody would have agreed with the major chord. The soundtrack and film, however, have it enter three beats later, on the motif's second bar. What this does is adds even more of a clash in the harmony since the second bar gives us notes that are not part of the A major chord, but are from the A Lydian scale (Lydian scales are often used to depict wonder, magic, and otherworldly qualities in film). The overall effect is this wonderful concoction of innocence, otherworldliness, mystery, fear, and tension that draws us right into the film before we've even laid eyes on the aliens or their ship.

RICHARDSTRAUSS68 reacted to Disco Stu in Johnny Williams Sr.
I've been sampling some of the hit recordings of the Raymond Scott Quintet from the late 1930s.
I love seeing the name Johnny Williams at the bottom of these record labels!
Williams' dad must have been one real cool jazz cat.
This one shows off Williams Sr's drumming skills really well
This one of course I already knew from a thousand Looney Tunes cartoons.
Damn fine brushwork from Williams.

Also the STAR WARS Anthology set had a few wrong takes of the 'Main Title' from A NEW HOPE which Matessino was quick to identify and rectify in the RCA Victor set.

Not my favourite soundtrack to "just" listen to but it works amazingly well in the movie - it'd have to since it's so essential to the plot!
But *sigh* I guess I'll buy it again in spite of knowing better. The Finale will have to bare the cost. Who could resist?

RICHARDSTRAUSS68 reacted to Manakin Skywalker in Which would you be more happy about? SW vs HP.
Star Wars mostly because the recording sessions have never leaked. We have everything from HP 1 & 2 so I'd mostly just be interested in PoA. But, as you said also, by a small margin. I'd love to have both!

I like it, To me I can hear differences in something the mixing is a tad diffrent and must have been done for this set. I wish I could find more on who did it exactly for this release.

The new poster for the re-release indicates this about a soundtrack re-release:
Original Soundtrack on Arista / Legacy Recordings.
Arista released the original soundtrack and also the expanded version in 1997. Legacy Recordings appears to be Sony's own label for re-releasing their music catalog. Sony owns the score.

This is true. At the 35th anniversary screening, they had many people involved in the TMP and the blaster beam player, David Newman (who played violin in the sessions), etc. Star Trek was green lit to a big budget theatrical release BECAUSE of Star Wars. There was tremendous pressure and hope from Paramount to get the success of SW with one of their properties so they gave it a budget twice as big, hired a classic director, etc. Goldsmith struggled to make the music as thematic as Star Wars and asked to be fired when being very frustrated that none of his ideas were getting approved. He scored the first reel or two and recorded it but Bob Wise hated it and the sessions stopped for him to restart the process. So in a way, the need for these motific themes like the Enterprise or Iliea owe a lot to Leia and the sound of Star Wars but Goldsmith was such a substantial composer that he kept that style firmly his own and found the soul of the film too. Interesting trivia...David Newman recalls a lanky young boy in the booth during the sessions. That was a young James Horner who hadn't yet scored any film but would coincidentally score the sequel and not use any of Goldsmith's material.

Plus the fact that CE3K was written 18 months earlier!
I'd say that ST:TMP is Goldsmith's CE3K.
