It took me about five listens of this score to understand it, probably because I needed to memorize it, but I agree completely. Dream Country is a first rate track. I was expecting at least some minor similarities between The Force Awakens and this one in terms of JW's musical interpretation of sadness but I don't really see any. I'm not sure which score I like better. The main theme from Overture is so breezy, but couldn't it have been longer?

Saw the film today, I have to say it's a Williams score that might soon become one of my favorites and that it definitely gave so many scenes this magical feeling. I think hearing the score in context helped too. The scene at night by the tree in Dream Country was so magical with the music I was teary eyed at how special it was!

Very true. I remember there was a time when I thought David Arnold would be the "next John Williams." Forsooth, there will never be another John Williams, just as there will never be another Beethoven.

I feel like Giacchino should be composing the music for Star Wars Rogue One, not Desplat. Giacchino has paid his dues and is worthy of the job.

@loert. I can see Luke and Leia swinging over the chasm.
My CD of this has always skipped at 3:29. Funny to hear it correctly after 19 years. LOL!

Lesser Horner? I disagree. "Jenny's Theme" is one of the most romantic and beautiful cues he ever wrote, in my opinion. Too bad it was never presented as powerfully in the film as it appears on the album.

It is undeniably sad that David Arnold no longer scores the films of Roland Emmerich. His music from Independence Day was one of the best scores of the 1990s, in my opinion. I cannot imagine how many times I have listened to it.

I noted the similarity too. I have been a champion of "The Falcon" since day one. Williams' expertise at composing scherzos is only increasing with time.

I did not know that Danny Elfman wrote music for a Honda commercial, but I have always loved his dream-like music for Nissan.

I have always wanted to hear "My Friend, the Brachiosaurus" performed live. The most beautiful cue in the movie, in my opinion. Let's hope the french horns do not mess it up.

I agree. I also remember "Duel of the Fates" being popular among people who had never heard of John Williams. The video was shown on MTV, as I recall. This was back when MTV actually showed music videos.

EdwardHall got a reaction from Jilal in James Horner 1953-2015
James Horner was a brilliant composer. Over the years I think too many people, including me, were too hard on him for self-plagarizing. Yet all the while my Horner collection continued to grow. That is because Horner was a composer who always moved me emotionally. I used to watch the end credits of "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" on VHS repeatedly to hear his music. Horner often claimed that he never wanted the audience to be aware of the music in the film, but with a composer of his caliber that was simply not possible. Some of the most memorable film moments in the past 30 years have had his music underneath. The death and funeral of Spock, the final suicide attack in "Glory," the Southampton sequence from "Titanic" and Jake's First Flight from "Avatar" are examples of how his music could soar, uplift, frighten, embolden the audience, always while supporting the picture on the screen. Horner was a treasure- in these days when many popular films are scored with generic synthesizer beats, Horner's music becomes even more valuable. My goodness, just look at how warm and comforting a scene such as the "Rooftop Kiss" in "The Amazing Spider-Man" is because of his beautiful music. (that oboe!) And let us not forget his french horns! How wonderfully ironic that a man named Horner could write such powerful and majestic music for the French Horn. "Stealing the Enterprise" from "Star Trek III: The Search for Spock" has the most triumphant french horns I have ever heard. Ever. Conversely, it is ironic in a very sad way that Horner died while flying an airplane. His ability to express flight musically was remarkable. - The Rocketeer, Apollo 13, the concert piece "Write Your Soul." Horner deserves a special segment at the Academy Awards next year. I propose that we members of the John Williams Fan Network start a petition to send to the Academy. Thank you.

I applaud JW for writing concert suites, but in actuality I never listen to them. I prefer the music as it was heard in the film. The only exception might be the concert version of "Marion's Theme" from "Raiders of the Lost Ark" that he performed at Tanglewood a few years ago. I believe it is on YouTube.

"Valiant" was a good episode in my opinion. I remember watching it for the first time clearly. I haven't read this entire thread so this may have been mentioned, but the music in Season 5 "Call to Arms: Part I" is exceptional. I like the militaristic theme music when the Cardassians walk triumphantly into the station. (I haven't seen this episode since the 90s, though, so I don't remember the particulars)

I have always wanted to hear a more complete version of the Klingon opera that Worf listened to in "In the Cards."
There has never been an official release of the United Federation of Planets anthem that was played in "Take Me out to the Holosuite," either.
