I'm a trumpet player for a living. We actually played Adventures on Earth and the SW suite (both official JW versions)this weekend with my orchestra. JW is literally the reason why I play trumpet. Saw SW in 1977 when I was 7. When it was time to pick an instrument in high school, the choice was easy...
that being said, I'm not a fan of those brass arrangements. JW said many times that he considers the orchestra the instrument he writes for. Rearranging his stuff to me is very bizarre. It never sounds right.

Anybody can confirm if the new Marion theme recording is the version from the Signature suite published just after KOCS came out? I'm guessing the Lincoln material is from the Signature edition suite. That would definitely make me want to get those scores. Also, any info on who is playing the trumpet solo?i would assume it would be Chris Martin since he played it before.

Holy crap! I didn't see that one coming. I'll be at one of the ESB concerts. I've been looking for an excuse to take my wife to NY. This is as good as it gets. Always loved the NY phil, but hearing them playing the whole ESB score is a dream come true.

My guess is that this version will be one of the tracks, with the string version as the other. Both pieces are titles "With Malice Toward None" in the Hal Leonard Signature Edition published suite.
I was just at sheetmusicplus to check out the list of pieces in the Signature suite, and to order the trumpet/piano version. I totally agree with you. I bet both versions were recorded. Now I'll have to get the score. Are the other pieces from that suite the same as the OST recording?

I played emperor waltz almost every year for the past 20...never noticed the Across the star reference. If I was to compare every piece by every composer to another composer I would go crazy. Every composer has been influenced by another. Doesn't matter what century.
Oh yeah, just finished playing 12 Nutcrackers. The similarities between Tchaikovsky's Trepak and JW Home Alone are minimal at best. Both fast and in 2/4 time. Pretty much it.
JW is definitely influenced but doesn't steal has blatantly as others. He's an incredibly crafty composer.

Playing the suite tonight. We're not doing the concert arrangement of Jedi steps, we're playing the end credits version. I have to say it feels a bit weird to repeat Rey's theme and March of the Resistance so close after playing their respective movements. Of well, pretty fun to play as a lead trumpet player. Ensign Kim (Garrett Wang) is the host. Obviously we're playing a Star Trek medley
-
Williams definitely orchestrates his own music. No doubt that. The orchestrator saves him time. I guess since he had lots of time for TFA, he's even listed as orchestrator.
-
In JW's case the word "orchestrator" might not be the best one. For having studied some of his sketches, the (pretty much full) orchestration is there on this 16 stave sheet. But for some other composer, it's definitely an appropriate word.

At the end of the end credits I'd advise against using the concert ending, it's really abrupt and doesn't quite fit the winding down flow of the piece. The film ending, which is included as an option, is definitely superior.
Definitely my preference too. Should be a fun concert, can't wait to play the suite. I'm not sure of the rest of the program yet, but I know Elfman's Suite from Batman is on there. Plus some Star Trek stuff. Should be a busy concert for sure.

Really awesome info. We're playing the suite in Oct and this is going to come handy to decide which Jedi steps to perform. Although it's a cool piece I think we'll go with the one that includes the finale as it's probably going to end the concert.

That's cool.
I've actually visited to your beatiful city in 1997.

p.s. I think I have seen the picture of you before, maybe it once was your profile picture...
Very nice. What brought you to Halifax? In 1997 I was either finishing my first season or starting my 2nd. Finishing 20th in 6 weeks. Time flies.

May I ask which orchestra are playing with?
I play principal trumpet with Symphony Nova Scotia in Halifax, Canada

I was lucky enough to play some. Trumpet is my instrument. Over the years my orchestra played the Signature versions of Adventures on Earth, The Cowboys, Superman March and the Star Wars suite. Next year we'll be performing the suite from TFA at a sci fi concert, then later in the season adventures on earth and SW suite again. Part of a space concert with astronaut Chris Hadfield. He'll play his stuff as well, and surely Bowie's Space oddity. On that concert we'll be playing a suite from Apollo 13. Looking forward to perform the trumpet solo.
Also played arrangements of HP, JP, Jaws and Olympic fanfare. Probably forgetting some.

Apparently those guys wanted $60k for us to do Home alone...and that was before paying the orchestra and other production costs...not cheap
-
That's really neat. Our orchestra is looking into those, but they're expensive as we would need to hire many extras to play any of them. We're only a "classical" size orchestra, so we would need to hire a lot of extra people. One can dream though.

I decided to follow up my email to the BSO with a question about the John Williams' concerts. He is the reply:
"The Film Night concerts with John Williams are scheduled for May 12th and May 13th."
These are Thursday and Friday. No Saturday concert.
This is horrible news. The only Thursday and Friday I have gigs in May. I guess the radio broadcast will have to do.

It will be performed by my orchestra next season sometimes in October during our annual scifi/comic concert. I guess I shouldn't be saying this yet as next season hasn't been officially announced yet....
Last October we performed 2 Signature edition selections, Superman march and the whole SW suite. As lead trumpet that made for a pretty incredible concert. Really looking forward to play March of the resistance and Scherzo for X-wing. Hopefully we play the Jedi steps and finale as well.

I have the part for this. Trumpet part. It is unbelievably difficult to play. He's definitely one of the best player ever. No wonder JW always wanted him to play lead on his scores.
-
I would have loved to hear Malcolm McNab play on a SW score. He played lead trumpet on so many JW scores, dating to The Man who loved cat dancing I believe.
Jon Lewis and the rest of the section did a great job though. Pretty busy score for trumpets As usual.
-
Hard to put against other scores as it's so different. But for that reason it's worth getting.

I've been breaking it down, comparing it, organizing it, and listining to it since the early hours of this morning. The more I listen to the digital remasters for the original trilogy the more I fall in love with it. It's like rediscovering something I didn't know I really really missed.
I feel the same way. I listened to ESB and heard tiny inner voice details I've never heard before, and I've been listening to this since 1980. Even if the PT stuff is the same, it was definitely worth $50 (Canadian) to me. Definitely the best release since the anthology in my opinion.

That sounds pretty accurate to me.

Thanks for reminding me of that version. Will have to load it on iPad.
