I bought this set in the fall of 1994, at the Tower records store downtown NY while on tour with the Montreal Symphony. It was a total surprise as I wasn’t following anything soundtrack related at the time. I couldn’t wait for the tour to be over so I could go home and listen to it.
    I love this set.

So I said I wasn't sure how I felt about the arrangement of 'The Asteroid Field' performed for Film Night...and put it down to just being surprised because I expected to hear the film version.

I tried listening to the radio broadcast online, and still couldn't get into it. It felt disjointed and like the original version was chopped up and shuffled around.

Well it seems it was just missing energy for me, and needed to be more uptempo, which I realized when I saw this performance:

Now this version might just be too uptempo, and on the frenetic side. But it at least doesn't feel disjointed, and the abrupt shifts in the music feel organic.

I guess what I'm saying is that I quite like the arrangement, if it's played with enough oomph!

Tintin is a great movie and a great score. That selection you pointed out is one of JW's trademark transitional segments. I've said it before, and I'll say it again, transitions are where the real geniuses excel. It's not enough to have great themes, but to move between them in a fluid manner. All the composers who we think of as Great are masters of this.

The likely explanation is that the 5th player was assisting the first one. And also probably covering other parts of the section. To give other people a break.

ricsim88 reacted to chrissiddall in James Horner's THE ROCKETEER in Full Score (Chris Siddall Music Publishing)
Dear Film Music Fans,   Chris Siddall Music Publishing is proud to announce that the Rocketeer study score is ready for pre-ordering.  Reuniting with director Joe Johnston, following 1989’s Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, James Horner finally achieves his goal of scoring a motion picture about flying. Until 1991’s The Rocketeer, Horner had always managed to “miss out” on projects relating to his passion for flight. The Rocketeer presented the perfect vehicle for him, and the resulting score is one of the finest he ever wrote. Bristling with energy and exuberance, the score is almost Wagnerian in its use of motifs.
As well as the orchestral score featuring exquisite orchestrations by John Neufeld, Elliot Kaplan and Conrad Pope, this edition also includes the unique opportunity to study five jazz standards which were specially arranged and orchestrated for The Rocketeer by the legendary Billy May.
Please visit ChrisSiddallMusic.com and be the first to own this classic masterpiece today.   390 pages, 9x12 inches. Paperbound, printed in the U.K.   $85.00   Available Worldwide   Note: Shipped from the UK. Please check with your country for import tax before ordering. This charge will be in addition to the item cost and shipping cost and varies by country.   THE ROCKETEER in Full Score (chrissiddallmusic.com)   Orders including The Rocketeer are expected to ship week commencing 2nd October 2023.

Finally got a chance to just sit and listen to this. Another great episode of the podcast and @Jay it was great to hear you and your insights added to the mix this time! Your work on this board over the years has proven that you would be great at working on these releases and I hope it continues.

I always enjoy the chats with Mike, @mahler3 & @TownerFan, and I always archive copies of these discussions along with my copies of the scores as I return to these episodes often, this will be no different.

I particularly liked what was said about how podcasts like this break down the barrier between us who love these releases and those who work on them... hearing all of the inside bits (at least what we are allowed to know ) on how these releases are made is always a gratitude inducing moment for me for as it was said, it's a small miracle these happen and I can't agree more.

It’s really cool that more recordings of the piece are being produced, but honestly I couldn’t be happier with the Hooten plays Williams recording. Especially that Williams himself is conducting.
I’m very glad that Tom pushed for it and raised money to make this happen.
