Cerebral Cortex reacted to Thor in What do we know about Esther Williams -- John's mom?
I'm reading some new information now, that Esther passed away in 1984 (one year prior to John sr.) due to breast cancer. But take it with a grain of salt. If memory serves, there are quotes from Williams himself that suggest she lived to the aforementioned year of 2006 (I've lost the quotes; I'll refind them at some point).
In any case, it's interesting to note these new pieces of information. For example, I now know that both of Willams' grandmothers were of Irish descent (Ada Hennessey and Helen O'Reilly Williams, respectively), so that gives a whole new perspective to FAR & AWAY.

I wonder when this album is finally coming out?

Cerebral Cortex reacted to artguy360 in 'Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny' wins Score of the Year and Best Adventure Score at the IFMCA Awards
I would have given it to Joe Hisaishi for The Boy and the Heron which did win for animated film score, but I think also deserves overall score of the year.

Cerebral Cortex reacted to Trope in New 20 minute audio interview: John Williams At The Movies
So awesome to hear Williams around 18:30 to praising Thomas Newman for his combination of orchestra with electronics and other elements when discussing the future of the orchestra in film music.
And my goodness, is Johnny still so sharp. And hearing all those musical excerpts throughout the interview got me hyped to listen to the score again. It's just such great music.

Yeah, I remember my parent's 30th anniversary party. You know, how people were coming up to them and telling them they would have preferred they married different people, and how there are other couples whose anniversary they would rather celebrate. Great memories, great party.

Cerebral Cortex reacted to Tom Guernsey in Happy 92nd Birthday Maestro John Williams!
To be fair, I think Beethoven's staffers run his account. He has a policy of never posting online himself. However, Brahms posts his own stuff and often copies what Beethoven wrote... cheeky.

Okay I love that John Williams and Warwick Davis party together

Cerebral Cortex reacted to JNHFan2000 in New Interview with John Williams reflects on the beginnings of his career, a lifetime in music, and his love for orchestras.
Love this bit!!
Even after so many years he remains so humble
"My feeling is that I can only put dots on a paper; it doesn’t become music until it’s interpreted by a great orchestra and has an audience to hear it. Then what’s written on the paper becomes music, becomes a communal act. The orchestra is part of the audience, and the audience surrenders itself to the orchestra for an hour or two or three. As a composer, I feel a great debt to interpreters and performers of my music. They’re partners in the creative process."

Cerebral Cortex reacted to Marian Schedenig in RIP Seiji Ozawa
Public news. But Williams seems to have been a personal friend, so he might well have been informed earlier.
It seems there should be several more videos of Ozawa with Williams (or conducting his music) that cannot be found on YouTube. But at least there's this:

Aaaaw, sorry to hear it. But he was in a very frail state last time I saw him, so I knew he didn't have long. It's somehow comforting to know that he and Williams managed to meet one last time, when he did the concerts in Japan last year.

Cerebral Cortex reacted to Ricard in JWFan turns 25!
JWFan was born 25 years ago today!
Hard to imagine back then that the site would still be up and running two and a half decades later, let alone that the Maestro would still be active after having composed nearly thirty more film scores and a similar number of concert works, as well as conducting over 200 concerts including Vienna, Berlin, Milan and Japan!
Dozens of his film scores have received perfect releases during all this time, providing fans with the confidence that many more will come in the future, while maintaining and further enhancing the collective appreciation and admiration for the music we all love and which will remain with us for the rest of our lives.
The analysis and discussion of his work has reached such level of comprehensiveness and detail, that our forums have become an essential reference for fans and scholars, while fomenting the creation of fascinating projects that expand and deepen the study of the Maestro’s oeuvre and contribute to increasing its appreciation by future generations who, without doubt, will continue to ensure that his name is in the place it deserves in the history of music and cinema.
Thank you, Mr. Williams, and thanks to all those who have contributed during this time to make the site such a wonderful place. Here’s to 25 more!
PS. The following quoted post, written for this thread 10 years ago, provides a short summary of the origins of the site:

Cerebral Cortex reacted to Edmilson in Predict your top-5 2024 Most Likely JW expanded releases
I did, yeah.
I made the most foolish bet possible: I bet against John Williams not being nominated for an Oscar. Now I have to use LB's face as my avatar until February 23rd, and if JW somehow wins, it'll be until 2025.

Cerebral Cortex reacted to mrbellamy in When did John Williams last shave his face fully?
Miguel had the only good answer in this thread lol:
So no later than 1966, at least as far as we've ever seen him. I think these are from the early 60s? Judging by him pictured with Mahalia Jackson.
Incidentally, Google turned up this rather bizarre commentary on his facial hair

Original Petition:
Link to petition: https://chng.it/M95VFmdPbv
We're gonna need to give this petition as much exposure as we possibly can. Share it anywhere you frequent where you talk about film music and Star Wars!
If we can get at least this much accomplished, it becomes much more likely that Disney will allow Matessino to do the rest of the Star Wars scores, as well as the Indy scores, too!

Cerebral Cortex reacted to Tydirium in John Williams receives 54th Oscar nomination for Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny!
Huh? Genuinely puzzled by this. The award isn’t for the composer who reaches/tops their previous work; it’s for the best score of a given year… It’s entirely possible for JW to write a score that “doesn’t reach the heights of his most classic works,” and for that score to still happen to be better than the other contenders...

Cerebral Cortex reacted to Bryant Burnette in John Williams receives 54th Oscar nomination for Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny!
I think Oppenheimer deserves this particular win, but I'd be happy for Williams to pick up another Oscar after an unforgivable drought. That said, he'd be winning for a score that would rank only somewhere in the middle-to-bottom among the scores he's put out since the last time he won an Oscar, and that would feel kind of odd.

Cerebral Cortex reacted to Edmilson in Joe Kraemer: “I haven’t scored a single mainstream Hollywood movie since ‘Rogue Nation’”
Indeed. Outside Hollywood, there's a lot of great music in movies/TV shows from Japan, China, Spain, France, etc.
Jon Broxton has made some posts about them in his website:
