The literal purpose of a film score is to enhance the film in whichever way the director envisions. Everyone judging the score without seeing the film is doing so as a listening experience, something that the score isn’t meant to be listened as. Are you saying you read screenplays like books?
No, it shouldn’t.
Film score nerd double standard: Get pissed when a score release is 30 minutes and complain about it for 10 years until an expansion is released. When the first release is the complete score, bitch and moan about it being a bad listening experience.
Composers don't “cash in” on album sales.
Completely right. No composer makes any money from album sales. And I always prefer a long album. I like having as much music as possible.

So much dislike for HGW... I really love his scores for Narnia, Kingdom is Heaven, Spy Game and all the Shrek scores among others. The Martian is also good...

Picasso is one of the few scores by Balfe so far that I haven’t turned off lol

I am going to avoid listening to the score before I see the movie. This seems like a score to hear in context for the first time.

Ah so the mix is the issue

I really liked Kraemer's work on MI5 and Giacchino's work on MI4 (hated his MI3 score though) and I was a bit bummed that Kraemer didn't return for MI6 but I give Balfe the benefit of the doubt. I have yet to listen to the samples but he was clearly asked to score the movie in a certain way.
Btw check out his Genius: Picasso score... it's really good and the opposite of his horrible actions cores.

Check out the genius season 1 score as well. It has a main title theme by zimmer and score by balfe. It’s good.

Braveheart and especially Titanic are both better scores than Jurassic Park and Lost World in my opinion...

I think there’s too much focus on that she’s a woman. She’s just a composer.
-
She has worked with great composers and done some interesting scores so this Will hopefully be great!

Powell worked on Knight and Day which was directed by Mangold.

I hope JNH doesn't choose to do a Star Wars movie instead of one of the Beasts sequels...

I was wondering whether it appeared in the film! It's total absence from the OST wasn't a negative for me, but I was surprised it didn't at least appear in Reminiscence Therapy.
I still think Giacchino deserves a huge amount of credit for achieving what he did in the time he had, but you're right. The two scores are what they are, and Solo is far superior.I don't think the time argument is good because great scores have been written in that amount of time. JNH's King Kong and Desplat's Imitation game to name a few...

PS - I apologize for dragging Star Wars into this thread. Back to the subject at hand - as reported earlier, Joe Kraemer was not replaced by Balfe on MI6. Joe Kraemer was never hired for MI6. Apparently, McQuarrie stopped talking to him after MI5 came out, until he emailed Kraemer to tell him he wasn't hiring him for Fallout earlier this year.
So in this case, Balfe is not replacing Kraemer in the way that he usually replaces composers.
He stopped talking to him? That's a bit extreme considering that they have worked together for so many years. They must have had a really big falling out on MI5...

I really would have liked a Desplat non star wars sounding score for Rogue One! Too bad we got Giacchino's poor attempt.

Desplat left because he decided to focus on Valerian instead of rewriting RO to fit the new edit. Different situation.
That’s the official story. He might have been fired.

If you get asked to score a movie, you do it, no matter who scored the last one. It’s like saying Kraemer shouldn’t have taken the job on MI5 because Ghost Protocol was a great giacchino score (which it was)...
-
Balfe was not a replacement composer on MI6... Kraemer was never hired. Balfe has been working on this score for months.

The interviewer who does all interviews at Film Music Media is really great. Unlike many other interviewers he really knows what he's talking about and asks relevant questions! I would like him to interview JW, Zimmer and JNH in the future!

Chicken Run would have been better as a solo effort IMO. The Powell sections stand far above the Gregson-Williams ones.
They both wrote some amazing music for that movie.

Lol, Balfe doesn’t own the rights and what he makes from album sales is maybe less than 1% of what he makes from his straight up fee and his royalty earnings from movie showings or when it is shown on TV.
