Wow, thanks everyone!  Obviously, the most important question to address is how I got those italics. Simple! https://lingojam.com/FacebookFonts

As for the timeframe: I have over a year to hand in the finished manuscript, but my goal is to have it completed well before that. It's a big book, and publishing is a very slow process. But everything so far is proceeding as I have forseen...

It's not a guide to the scores really, but something more holistic, with each chapter looking at cues from all three trilogies from some angle: musical referentiality, thematic transformation, concert arrangements, and so on. There will be a ton of music examples (all my own annotated transcriptions as usu.), hopefully presented in an accessible way that draws in people who can't read sheet music. I know notation and music-theory jargon can be intimidating, and I'm hyper-aware of the potential gatekeeping effect it could on an already niche readership. But at the same time, I think we can all agree this music warrants deep and serious analysis! It's a balancing act for sure...

Alas, I don't have special access to recordings, and can't speak to official expanded album releases, as amazing as they would be!

Incidentally: I don't see it trumpeted nearly enough on these boards but Chloé Huvet came out with a book on SW music (mainly the OT and PT) a couple years ago that is absolutely brilliant and similarly synthetic in approach. The book is in French, which limits the audience, but it's worth getting your hands on if only for the fantastic music examples and charts.  The amount of insight in her prose is incredible too, and it's been a major source of inspriation to me.

    Roger says

Intrada announces an expanded edition of Danny Elfman's 1990 score to Clive Barker's Nightbreed, which provided Elfman with the perfect opportunity to indulge in his first outright, gore-filled horror feature. As Elfman himself described his experience, "Nightbreed was great fun, and I loved working with Clive Barker. But it was a real  difficult score, 75 minutes with a lot of different styles, very dense,  difficult music that was very challenging. But as always, the harder it  is the more I love it.” Not only did Nightbreed mark Elfman’s dive into a nightmarish fever dream, but it also marked his first significant use of world music in a film score. A South American pan flute, the shimmering beat of a Balinese gamelan  and heated drumming all feature in this large orchestral work that is  unique, but also clearly classic Danny Elfman.

At the time of the  film's release, a generous album was released on MCA Records. With the  generous cooperation of Universal Music Group, Morgan Creek and Danny Elfman's team, Intrada was able to greatly expand the album into a  2-CD set. The first disc features the complete 75-minute score. The  second features the original and carefully curated 46-minute album Elfman assembled back in 1990, as well as a suite of alternates.

The film is based on Clive Barker's novella Cabal, in which a graveyard necropolis named Midian provides sanctuary for creatures that have fled to hide from horrific persecution. Their shattered god, Baphomet  the Baptizer, calls out to an unlikely savior named Boone (Craig  Sheffer), a young man who thinks his visions of beckoning nightbreed are  proof of his insanity. Further convinced that he’s a murderer by his  psychiatrist, Decker (David Cronenberg), Boone is betrayed and shot down  by the police. But death is only the beginning of Boone’s journey as  he’s resurrected as the ravenous “Cabal.” Now he must accept his  Moses-like destiny to protect his newfound people and lead them from the  destruction of Midian at the hands of a bloodthirsty human militia.

The happy news I cryptically alluded to last week is now something I can make official: I just signed a book contract with OUP for 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘬𝘺𝘸𝘢𝘭𝘬𝘦𝘳 𝘚𝘺𝘮𝘱𝘩𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘦𝘴: 𝘔𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘭 𝘚𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘺𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘪𝘯 𝘚𝘵𝘢𝘳 𝘞𝘢𝘳𝘴!   It's a book it feels like I've been writing in my head for a long, long time -- since middle school, kinda? And unless Williams somehow returns to write another entry in the series, I'm treating it a chance to provide a properly 𝘴𝘺𝘯𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘵𝘪𝘤 investigation into these scores, all nine of them.   Even Rise of Skywalker?? 𝘌𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘤𝘪𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 Rise of Skywalker!   My hope is this book does some justice to the complexity, challenge, and sheer magic of this music.   Now, back to the grindstone!   https://www.facebook.com/Falstaft/posts/pfbid0L6wUjeDDxj6AmhwHh1f9obrVMJfYbPx4GJM8YaEWiZtqxwp37A88monPFVDxBQ26l

MI8 filmed in the UK from March 2022 to December 2022.  Starting in July 2023 they were filming in Italy, until everything shut down from the back to back strikes.  They didn't resume filming again until this month, which is why the film was delayed from 2024 to 2025.  So now we're getting news of cast members who presumably weren't part of the 2022 UK or 2023 Italy filming.

Bayesian reacted to Badzeee in What was your first encounter with Jerry Goldsmith?
I have a certain sympathy with this... where they definitely don't antagonise me, Goldsmith's scores rarely move me in quite the same deeply emotional way as, say, a John Williams, a John Barry, a Joe Hisaishi or an Ennio Morricone might. There are exceptions (Star Trek V, The Mountain being one, the Voyager theme another), but I think he's fantastic at action scores or terrifying you (The Omen and ALIEN being good examples). Which is when I figured it out - fear is not simply an emotion, it's a fight-or-flight response and this is what I think Goldsmith is extremely good at - subtextual scoring.

I'm not a musician myself (although most of my family are) but I love music and work to it most of the time. And what I've found is, a lot of Goldsmith stuff is often about the mental state of the characters onscreen, whereas all the others mentioned have a slightly different approach - less focused, more "widescreen," if you like. Williams is the uber-storyteller, matchless in deciding what approach to employ, whether thematic, emotional, action-led, whatever, to any given scene; he can use music to "zoom" you in or out of an emotional state.

Barry was often romantic. Arguably, he invented modern action music with his Bond scores, but he could never quite resist the emotional undertow of a scene, especially if there was a romantic, yearning quality to it. Both Hisaishi and Morricone are epic, vast, absolutely unrepentant in using orchestral colour to illustrate even small human emotions. (And I love that about them.)

Goldsmith, when he went epic, he'd do The Omen or his various Star Trek themes. They're huge, brilliant, but even when he's doing an action or military theme, there's always something incredibly centred and intense about the notes and instruments he chooses. He's more of an interpreter than the others (as opposed to an emotional accompanist). When he does scary or paranoid, he does it better than almost anyone - like in Seconds or Total Recall.

I dunno, I'm not using music terminology, just attempting to describe my impressions so I might not be making a lot of sense. But I too find him stylistically very different to all his contemporaries and peers... but maybe understanding the interpretive intensity that drives his scores is a way in. It certainly worked for me.
