I will say that this score is growing on me....but it's a far cry from Mr. Williams.
I still dislike having Krenic's march play when the Star Destroyer and Death Star is first revealed.

Yeah, as a last minute rescore.

Last minute or not it's canon.

The imperial march was used in attack of the clones. It did exist

I specified that they didn't have to blare the imperial march at us every time we see the empire. Something similar sounding to what John did in a new hope would have been appropriate. But what they did was very jarring on first viewing. The empire has an established theme I don't know it required a new theme that belongs in a lesser franchise.

Here is my unsophisticated fan girl opinion. I saw the movie two nights ago and I hated the score while watching the film. Listening to the score in ITunes seems to be a much better listen than hearing it in the film itself but it's still sub par. During the movie itself I found the score to be distracting. Especially when the empire is shown. I was seeingbeautiful images star destroyers and the Death Star and all could think was what is this I'm hearing? I'm not saying you have to blast the imperial march every time you see the empire but the sound of the imperials has been well established. Hearing what Gia did while seeing star destroyers just took me out of the movie. Maybe I'll learn to live with it but first viewing I was jarred by it.

I saw the movie last night. I'm on my way to work and don't have time for a proper review but I will say very quickly that I personally found the score to be incredibly distracting.

I want every single one of the Williams/Spielberg collection! And I want them yesterday ?
If i if I had to pick it would be Schindlers List. No film in the history of cinema has ever hit me on the emotional level quite the way Schindlers List did. In someways I think it is Williams best score. In some ways.

Regardless who is pulling the strings.....it is mid September and the release is in December. Isn't this cutting it kinda close?

David Arnold is very hit and miss for me. But when he is hitting he can do a really good job.

If you lined up 10 Hollywood executives and said, "We need a traditional John Williams Star Wars score but John doesn't want to do it," at least 9 of them would instantly recommend Giacchino. It's as simple as that.
I agree completely with this statement, however, it got me thinking. Who would you pick for Star Wars "stories" given Williams isn't going to do them and Desplat for whatever reason isn't scoring Rogue One. Going forward....What are our options out there? I can't think of anyone I would feel comftorable handing over the reins to. I thought Desplat was an interesting choice but I was still cautiously optimistic.

I know I don't post here that often but I do follow your posts and comment when I can. I am very upset by this news. It's not that I harbor a special hatred in my cold heart for Giacchino like a lot members of this site do. I actually enjoy some of his scores...specifically his first two Star Trek scores. I admit I haven't heard a single note from the third film. Having said that I can't help but shake the feeling that Rogue One will now sound and feel like a score that is trying desperately to sound like John Williams but falling very flat. Don't misunderstand I wish John Williams could take a special pill that would allow him to magically live forever and score every single Star Wars spinoff film from Rogue One until the end of time but seeing life is a cruel bitch and that's not possible adjustment must be made. I was genuinely but cautiously looking forward to Desplat. I don't fully remember his Godzilla score (although I have read many of you saying it was good) but his Harry Potter scores were solid scores in my opinion. However, what most impressed me and had me excited for Rogue One was his Grand Budapest score. I adore everything about that score. True the requirements from Grand Budapest to Rogue One are as different as Oscar Schindler to Salascious Crumb but Grand Budapest demonstrated an ability to show off hummable multi-character themes, a real sense of eccentricity, and provided a sense of identity to the film that so many hollywood productions lack in this age. I was really looking forward to Rogue One. I still am.....but a little less so now

She will always be Miss Mellie from Gone with the Wind for me. She had such beautiful eyes.

I don't know the story but I had no idea it was going to be CG.

This is not at all what I was expecting but I am still looking forward to it

Being a huge disney fan I know this score well. It is a magnificent score that I hope makes the legacy collection soon.

John williams, to the best of my knowledge, still hasn't been confirmed for episode 8. This really concerns me. I would have thought if it were going to happen it would be announced by now. I'm getting worried.

I have never been a fan of the marvel cinematic experiment. I find them to often be badly paced and badly shot disavowing any genuine and lasting payoff in the end. I have never thought comic books translate to film very well. Especially marvel. I just can't take at least half of their characters seriously. Whether it be the frost Giants in Thor or half the cast from the avengers. I somewhat enjoyed Nolans dark night series. I preferred Burton. The original superman is saved by its score.
I do think if the marvel universe had better scores it would help. I can't recall a memorable theme from any of them. I have always thought, as an exorcise, if someone were to remove Captain America's score and replace it with Goldsmiths score from the shadow it might be watchable.

It is a piece that has really grown on me too. I also was pretty underwhelmed on my first listen. The entire score and film has really grown on me since my first experiences with it. I hope that we are able to love episode 8 and it's score right off the bat.
My favorite John Williams scherzo is still from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.

And to be fair maybe he would of thought of that had he had more than three and a half weeks to complete an entire film.
Honestly I can't fathom how an entire film can be scored that quickly. But then again I can't fathom how to write a film score anyway ha.
