Smaug The Iron reacted to Andy in NEW! THE SUGARLAND EXPRESS - World Premiere Original Motion Picture Soundtrack - La-La Land Records
First listen impressions:
This restoration is bloody brilliant. Absolutely remarkable sound quality. The assembly is delightful, telling a narrative that goes from carefree to desperate to clinging to hope to finale. I would’ve liked to have the source music as bonus tracks. But I can’t complain because the album ends on such a Jaws End Title style satisfying note.
You can really hear Toots Thielemans’ vocal sounds and it’s a blast.
I almost understand why Williams didn’t want it released. Not because it’s slight, or short, but because there are so many wild takes of long sustained tones with the Wrecking Crew doing their thing. I don’t want to use the word droning because that has a negative connotation associated with it. But this isn’t a Mickey Mouse synch point score.
But my god check out the desperation in Sealing the Bargain. The percussion in The Caravan Forms and To the Roadblock. Oh my God Pursuit is brilliant. Like ‘Lost World’ brilliant.
Amazing to start the score with the breezy, hicky Freedom at Last and The First Chase, and then move into the Police percussion stuff with some wild recorded Toots and the Wrecking Crew and then finally the Final Ride is almost the crescendo rivaling the Beatles’ Day in the Life. And then the End Title for denouement. Every version of The Theme blows the revision from 1990 out of the water, which never seems to resolve, with numerous false starts of the complete melody.
It’s probably a divisive score. Some people will fall in the middle and say “meh”. I absolutely love it. Personally, I find this no less bold and experimental than Images. I mentioned the Lost World earlier… I think it’s brilliant in similar ways. Naturally I prefer the Lost World, but this is similarly unconventional.
There’s a melancholic feeling about it, and yet there’s a joy for life threaded through. The sounds are evocative of memories of when I was very young (born in 1972) and that really speaks to me. I grew up with OG Sesame Street, so Toots was always a part of my life, as silly as that may sound.
I want to see the movie again now.
This was worth the wait and more.

Smaug The Iron reacted to enderdrag64 in The Official La-La Land Records Thread
I just bought my first batch of LLL CDs ever last week (well, my first ones from LLL anyway - I do have one or two I've gotten used before).
I just picked up AI, The Lost World, and Amistad in the most recent sale. I wanted to get Minority Report as well but it seems to have gone out of stock before I had a chance.
The shipping was a bit expensive but I can't wait to check these out! I've never actually listened to any of these three scores before so I'm pretty excited.

Smaug The Iron reacted to Jay in The Legacy of John Williams (Website & Podcast)
I was able to listen to the podcast episode this morning and it's a really good one!
I quite enjoyed all the talk of the Sugarland film, well as the score, and putting both in context of what Spielberg and Williams were doing before and after.
After the Sugarland talk, Mike gives a small update on Williams' health, which isn't really much more than what was said publicly already, but it still so nice to hear from a close collaborator talking as opposed to reading a press release.
And then he says another Williams title, that's already completely finished, should be coming out soon, and then another one should be out by the end of the year. Love to hear it!

Smaug The Iron reacted to artguy360 in Holdo's theme from TLJ deserves more
I just came across this simple edit on YouTube playing Holdo's theme when she and Leia say goodbye to each other and the big climatic Holdo's Resolve music. This reoccurring motif popped up unexpectedly for me as I watched TLJ for the first time, and I instantly wanted more of this little gem.
Unfortunately, I think the theme is very poorly represented in the OST although the big moment is edited into the end credits. From the way the motif is scored in the film, it kind of is the major musical propulsion for that whole middle segment of TLJ. I almost wish Holdo's Theme got the full concert arrangement treatment or at least better presentation on the OST. What do you, dearest JWfan reader, think?

I'm using Titus' square real title version for 1 and made "matching" Hogwarts-view covers using his borders and text for 2 and 3.
