Not reading that, but after TFA came out I went skimming through old spoilers and Making Star Wars had compiled basically the whole story before the summer. Just about everything they got their hands on was either dead accurate or on the right track so the spoiler-wary should probably (definitely) stay away from there. Seems like they check their sources more than others and are pretty straight up about what they do and don't know.

Yeah, Making Star Wars has an exceptionally good track record. I think I read once in an interview with the editor-in-chief, Jason Ward, that they only post info that's been confirmed by multiple sources. And even the stuff they post that doesn't end up in the movie isn't usually wrong, because it was an early idea that just didn't make it into the final film. Making Star Wars is not speculation. It's solid reporting.

  2. Not sure if people realized, but it's not that the AI bit I posted above generally sounded like the same type of stuff in the BFG premiere video; what I meant is it specifically sounded very similar to one of the BFG main themes, just for a few seconds.

Specifically, 11:19 of the AI YouTube clip corresponds to 0:44 of loert's piano playing of the BFG score found here:

is someone going to be able to record the airing of this on wgbh and upload it for download? I was there, and would love to be able to listen to it

Will Saturday night's broadcast be available as a podcast or only live?

Typically it is available on-demand on the WGBH website. But there's no guarantee that will be the case this year, although it seems likely.

Hmm probably because I have been rendering the videos without any actual visual content (and rendering at 1x1 resolution, 1% quality etc.)

Is there any way for you to make them the same file type as all the other cues you've posted in the past months (which open fine)? Thanks so much by the way for all the cues you've posted. Between Jason LeBlanc's analysis and your film and documentary rips, this is probably the thread of the year!

Now that I am listening more closely to the Target features, I'm hearing part of a cue that was probably written for one of Finn's saber fights, probably the one with the stormtrooper. And hot damn, is it good. Should have been on the OST.

Is this something Fennel Ka has posted in this thread? Your description makes me really want to hear that cue, but I didn't get the Target version of the film (I got the Amazon digital), and I couldn't find the Target extras on YouTube.

  5. THERE ARE MAJOR SPOILERS AT THE LINK BELOW. DO NOT CLICK IT IF YOU DO NOT WISH TO BE SPOILED!

    A MakingStarWars.net report

(I didn't use the actual link text because it might be considered a spoiler)

This sounds really cool! DON'T CLICK ON THE HIDDEN TEXT BELOW EITHER IF YOU DON'T WANT A MAJOR SPOILER.

    Spoiler

Really changes the way you think about the Force-back from TFA. I always thought the Knights of Ren shot from there was from the past, but it could actually have been a look at the future (the events of Episode 8).

(I'm being really cautious about spoilers here because I don't want to ruin the movie for anyone)

    Yup.

By the way, terrific "The Falcon" transcription. It has all the spirit of the full orchestra version. I wish I played piano... Action music sounds really cool on piano, particularly a rhythmic masterpiece like "The Falcon," which, I must add, is growing on me as a cue every day. When the score came out I wasn't a huge fan, now I have it running through my head quite often. Finn's theme (or whatever it is; some disagree) is so good!

  7. I've been listening to Giacchino's Trek scores for the first time (I know, I know, but I'm new to film score fandom, okay?:P) and I'm really impressed. He's no Williams, but his action scoring can really be fun to listen to at times, like, say, in the STID opening scene. Although, some of Giacchino's middle-grade action stuff has the issue of emulating Williams to a degree but lacking the Williams "spirit," making those cues kind of boring.

    Thanks!

In response to the discussion of the possible sample library cue:

That cue is just so good though, I'm having trouble coming to terms with it not being Williams... Hopefully we can get a definitive answer on whether this is him.

I tried to notate and play the piano melody from 10:41.

Thanks! I keep watching the red carpet videos because the music is so good, but it's kind of brutal to listen to people repeatedly yell "Steven!" while you're trying to focus on the score.

Certainly a refreshingly colourful palette by the look of things.

Yes! It looks absolutely gorgeous, rarely do films attempt to put such a bright explosion of varied color onto screen.

    Quote

Just noticed Big Ben in place of the Disney castle, with the time set at the "witching hour." Neat detail!

    Cool, I hadn't spotted that!

  10. Amen.

It's quite clever: The broad, lyrical cantilena actually spells out "B(b)-F-G", in that it emphasizes the tonic, fifth and major 6th.

Well, I'm not very knowledgeable about technical musical stuff so I have no idea what that means, but it sounds cool!

So far,I love the Hook-ish statement of the main theme that starts at 11:05 but don't really care for the Mickey-Mousing that follows.

I largely agree. The mickey-mousing is good, better than much of the non-Williams stuff these days, but it's nothing spectacular. But the long-lined statements that precede it...:music:Very powerful and beautiful.

Most of the music in Building BB-8 isn't Williams. Probably library music of some sort. The others use Williams music for the most part - the main possible exception being that cue we were talking about, which could be his...but I just don't think so. It's a little too harmonically simplistic.

Huh. I'll have to watch Building BB-8 again.

Hmm, the context of the other pieces sheds some doubt on it being Williams music.

Yes, it does, if it was the only piece they played I think I'd be a lot more confident in it being Williams. Seems strange that they'd just drop in a score cue in the middle of all that other stuff. Also, the possible Williams bit is very repetitive. Is it looping, or does the thing just meander along for almost 7 minutes? In any case, it is a beautiful emotional melody, no matter who wrote it.

  13. 14 minutes ago, mrbellamy said:

Yep, I think so! Reminds me a lot of Lincoln

Yes! That's actually the first thing I thought when I heard the solo piano melody.

Above is the full video of the BFG red carpet. Pop music and such is played until about 5:22, when it switches to "Carnival of the Animals" by Camille Saint-Saëns until about 6:07. Then the possible Williams music begins and continues until 12:49. It's not Carnival of the Animals, right? I clicked to a few points on that composition on YouTube, and none of them sounded like the possible Williams bit.
