I might have just found a bit of the score!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (or maybe not) Does anyone recognize the background music in that video from anywhere? Or is it safe to say it's new? It certainly sounds like it could be Williams, but it's hard to be sure.

What? Can you name some examples? I watched all the features and I thought it was all definitely Williams. By the way, I must credit Fennel Ka (aka Faleel) for the above Google Drive file of the cue (a rip from a documentary). Fennel Ka, the two above links no longer work. Would you be able to fix that? Thanks.

Basically, nearly identical music is heard during the Rey Meets BB-8 scene and the R2 Shows The Map scene. According to one of the Jason LeBlanc's posts in which he analyzed those two cues.... ... So this is a bit of a mess. Really, the reason I think the unknown cue could be a version of the opening music for the Rey meets BB-8 scene is that in the Secrets of TFA documentary it was heard during BTS footage of the filming of that scene. Also, it just seems to have the right tone for the scene.

Variety updated their review http://variety.com/2016/film/reviews/the-bfg-review-steven-spielberg-1201774476/ Sounds like maybe, like TFA, the score is very good but the themes may not be considered very memorable by the general public.

I'm really surprised how little discussion there's been about the TFA alternates/unused cues. This one - https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BxQSwI5aPja9ZG41dVRqaVlhLWs/view?pref=2&pli=1 - in particular I have found to be absolute gold. I've speculated that it's Williams' intended music for Rey Meets BB-8; does anyone else have any other ideas?

"Eerie silence" may well be better for a particular scene, but that doesn't mean Williams' music isn't terrific. Of course, there's always a chance that Williams' score actually isn't very good, but I remember lots of people were saying that for TFA and look what we got there... I don't really trust most film critics to give accurate takes on Williams scores these days. I even think much (although not all) of what he's doing nowadays is as good as what he did 30 years ago. Not better, but just as good.

Another review (doesn't mention the score): http://www.irishtimes.com/culture/film/the-bfg-review-undeniably-warm-hearted-but-lacks-sparkle-1.2648477 Ooooooh! UPDATE: Huh. https://thefilmstage.com/reviews/cannes-review-the-bfg/ I do recall that TFA's score was greeted similarly by many. And that was an absolute masterpiece.

So... this premiered a couple hours ago, I believe. I'll look online to see if I can find any early reactions to the film or score. UPDATE: Review of the film! https://www.thewrap.com/the-bfg-cannes-review-steven-spielberg-roald-dahl-have-a-great-character-not-a-great-movie/ Information about the dedication to Melissa Mathison included in the film: http://www.usatoday.com/story/life/movies/2016/05/14/pielbergs-bfg-dedicated-to-screenwriter-melissa-mathison/84367484/ Another film review! http://variety.com/2016/film/reviews/the-bfg-review-steven-spielberg-1201774476/ Unfortunately, this is literally the only thing I could find about the score: UPDATE #2: Another review: http://www.indiewire.com/article/the-bfg-review-cannes-2016-steven-spielberg-mark-rylance?utm_source=Facebook&utm_medium=Social&utm_campaign=IW_post

Here's how the conversation should go: "Mr. Williams, could you sign this?" "Sure, angel. Do you have a Sharpie?" "Yep, here you go." "Baby, you need a better Sharpie than this. It barely works!" "I know, I had some others, but they're all dead."

Uh oh, I don't think I can watch this.

Someone posted (Bad quality, but still awesome) video of Williams conducting "Star Wars Main Title" to kick off the second half of the program 26 minutes ago: https://www.periscope.tv/IndieRevolver/1lPKqlERBrAxb --------- And a picture of the hard copy program for those of you who care: One of the replies to the above tweet is pretty funny: I mean, if you're calling 'em songs, how much of a Williams fan can you really be? ---------------- Okay, I guess I'll keep posting stuff from the concert. Wish I were there. Also FYI I believe this will be broadcasted on the Boston radio (is it WGBH?) on Saturday. EDIT: Sorry this post is so long, all my replies are merging!

Favorite short musical moments in Williams scores?
Will replied to Balahkay's topic in JOHN WILLIAMS
1:51-1:55, 6:53-7:02, 7:52-7:59, 8:49-9:05, 9:45-10:00 One of my all-time favorite Williams cues. I'm not very knowledgeable in the technical aspects of music, but some of the chords here are just so great (best examples = 6:53-7:02, 7:52-7:59, 9:54-9:59). -
Gosh, can't believe this thing premieres this weekend. Such an exciting time, the lead-up to the release of a Williams score*. Hopefully we get some good reports on it. We're counting on you, Thor! (also, I like Spielberg, so even aside from the score I am very interested in the film) *I know, us regular folk won't see the movie till July, but we should be getting reviews and such shortly, which is still pretty exciting.

Absolutely. The man's music is far better than "mediocre." Giacchino should get any Star Wars film Williams isn't doing.

John Williams' 10 Best Concert Suites post 2000?
Will replied to TheUlyssesian's topic in JOHN WILLIAMS
I can't get over how Dark Side the end of the piece sounds. It almost seems as if Williams was given info saying Luke and/or Rey are going to/already have turned to the Dark... But I'm mystified because that seems like a hint the maestro would have put in the film itself; a concert arrangement released later seems a strange place to do that. Maybe what I think sounds evil actually is just representative of the mystery and "the scariness of the unknown" (as Rey does not know what Luke will be like)? -
The recording sessions from TFA have not leaked, nor has there been a comprehensive official release, but you can find some music that was not on the original soundtrack CD on the Disney Awards site's "For Your Consideration" tracks, as well as in the "The Force Awakens - Complete Score Breakdown & Chronological Order (Film Spoilers Allowed)" thread on these forums, where the poster Faleel has posted rips from the film as well as various documentaries. The following threads offer information on finding more TFA music: The Force theme quote you mention that was directly tracked in from A New Hope can be heard on the "Burning Homestead" track from the A New Hope soundtrack. I think someone on YouTube already posted an edit of "The Ways of the Force" TFA OST track with the "Burning Homestead" quote inserted where it is heard in the TFA film (the "The Ways of the Force" OST track includes the Force theme statement that Williams newly composed specifically for that scene in TFA, which the filmmakers decided to replace in the final film with the tracked bit from A New Hope).

They posted a similar photo.... .... in September when he was working on TFA. This photo is new, though (in fact, you can see that Williams has been moved to a new parking space). Also, TFA was recorded at Sony, and I believe The BFG is, too, so since these photos show Fox Studios it may indicate work on mixing and/or editing rather than the actual recording.

John Williams to Score Kobe Bryant short film "Dear Basketball"
Will replied to pete's topic in JOHN WILLIAMS
This news certainly brightened my Thursday. So awesome to have something totally out-of-the-blue like this. Sure, it's only a short film, but I feel that if Williams takes a non-Spielberg or Star Wars project at this point, he must be really inspired by it. And sports have produced some of his best pieces ever (including the Olympic Fanfare and Theme, which was actually the first Williams piece I ever heard, my introduction to the man would become my favorite composer). Can't wait for this.... and in the meantime we'll have The BFG to enjoy and dissect. -

A couple of those TFA alternate/unused bits were pretty awesome -- the mellow string/flute one (unknown cue) was absolutely gorgeous (could it have been the original "Rey Meets BB-8," since the belief is that the music heard in the film there was tracked?), and the "Torn Apart" alternate with the dramatic Force theme was incredibly, stunningly powerful.

John Williams Conducts the Philadelphia Orchestra - May 4 2016
Will replied to Joe Brausam's topic in JOHN WILLIAMS
Make sure to give us a report! I so wish I could be there. Having just become a John Williams fan recently, I have never seen the maestro live. I sure hope I'll get that chance sometime. Pretty cool that this concert is on Star Wars Day -- May the 4th Be With You! -

Been running through my head on repeat in the last few hours: That transition from Leia's theme to Luke's is perfect. -
