I sort of feel you on this.
The greatest thing about Williams's output in film is that it doesn't seem like film music; it's allowed to breathe and take its time and develop. That isn't to say other composers didn't (Goldsmith, Herrmann, Rozsa especially) but the nature of film often abuses music and chips away at it and really doesn't do it justice (see: How Ridley Scott treated Jerry's music on Alien).
But somehow Johnny's seems to thrive and sound more like concert work that just happens to work in a film instead of the other way around. Something about his approach changed around the first Harry Potter or The Patriot where he stopped writing so "broadly" and started writing "to the edits", which I imagine is why we have over two dozen short cues on this new album, which, though will certainly have IMMENSE quality to them, will lack that wide sweep of "scenery meets music" that even the prequels had.
The days of a Star Wars film having a cue like "Binary Sunset" are over, I'm afraid.

Will Tasker got a reaction from curlytoot in Why don't John Williams' orchestrators get credited in the soundtrack releases?
Let's not forget some things. Firstly, John was disrespected by a name orchestra (Boston Symphony?) and he literally folded up his conductors sheet and walked off stage during practice. He's just as human as the next person, so he has his moments as do we all. (I am reminded of what Mr Rogers said: that no one can tell a phony as well as a child can. Having seen Williams my entire life, I can safely say that the "wise old gentle grandfather" thing isn't an act.)

Secondly, an interview a few years back with the former Timpani player on the LSO described John Williams as "a steel fist inside a velvet glove". Meaning the man is entirely professional and expects the best from his others when it comes to the work. It's an ethic that came from his parents generation, who struggled to make ends meet through the Great Depression and never turned down work (though this is more exemplified by Jerry Goldsmith.)

Excellent observations!! I also think the falling semitone and minor third structure has roots in Anakin's Theme itself (especially the B-part of the theme where it has the sequence of three falling lines followed by Vader's motif).

People are shaken from this dreadful loss, confidence is gone, the embarrassment is too great, and it's unlikely that Williams will be asked back for further installments.  Future expanded projects will be buried and he will fall into obscurity.

Its probably my favorite part of the new score - but is it the best? Not by a country mile.

Yes, "Across the Stars" sounds very similar to Jane Eyre.

Leia's Theme doesnt fit the bratty, annoying Princess at all. But it's works nicely as Luke's image of her.

Oh, no. I feared this could happen.
Who wants a picture booklet in a day when you can easily access to thousands of pictures through the internet? I don't mind for some pretty ones, but a full booklet of them in such an anticipated score is really a waste.
I still cannot wait to have it in my hands! Although I really don't know when that will be.

My main problem was basically the second and third acts. They just didn't deliver. Why give us another A New Hope and Return of the Jedi!!? The first act was beautifully done. I loved everything about it and then boom here's the past films again. I firmly believe the plot of the prequels is the best, being that the evil, cunning, brutal plot of Palpatine to rise to power and manipulate everyone into his plan was gorgeously executed. Minus all the CGI and annoying characters, the prequels had the most engaging plots. This just had no plot. ANOTHER deathstar. Another droid with secret plans. Another meet up with the rebellion, another black masked dark side villain serving another evil, dark, grey, pale skinned emperor figure, another x wing vs tie fighter battle, another action scene of the falcon flying through a tight space. Another ice planet battle. Another opening on a desert planet. Another finale action set piece of a main good guy talking with another main bad guy about how he's his father. Another destruction of a super evil planet sized base. Another celebration of the resistance winning. Another bored and disappointed fan.

I don't hate it. I'm disappointed. I'm a big Star Wars fan, I don't want to spread hate for the film, I am merely stating my opinion on why it lacked any new ideas.
Did anyone at any point think "WOW!" at anything? Or did anything make you think Man that's cool? Because it didn't for me and that is a huge negative. Even the preqiels made me think Wow, Phantom Menace was clearly the podrace and the duel with maul. I even thought the hundreds of Jedi vs droid army was a wow moment in AOTC and revenge of the sith really made me impressed with the final lightsaber duel and Anakin marching towards the temple and the entire sequence of the jedi being wiped out throughout the galaxy. This film didn't have a single wow or ooo that's cool moment for me. That is really saddening as a fan. I'm not hating. I'm quite shocked I didn't really enjoy it.
Speaking of moments that make me think this is cool, I didn't once think any piece of music was impressive. That is mightily depressing to me. As I've said on the music threads, I can't remember a single note or a single impressive moment music wise.

I just watched his Tavis Smiley interview and he seemed so happy and enthusiastic about this whole thing...I didn't really get any sense at all that he was ready to call it quits, but who knows.

Recent footage indicates to me he appears delighted and capable of continuing, and he has said in past interviews he can't imagine ever stopping. I mean, he's still going, relatively healthy at 83. Don't see any particular reason he won't keep going, unless of course there are unforeseen medical difficulties, but again that seems like needless speculation. At this stage I'm pretty sure he fully intends to at least do Ep 8 and will surely want to finish all 9: an epic career achievement, a life's work, a masterpiece.

So, based on what I have read here and in some basic reviews, the whole movie is a nostalgia fest made by a fan for fans, where every character has a
corresponding character in the OT, and where every situation has a corresponding situation in the OT. What about originality? Another Death Star. The one in
ROTJ was redundant enough already. And what about the First Order? Just sprang out of nothing? If so, that is a very lost opportunity for political and historical
commentary. Perhaps the next two films will rectify this somewhat.

    Saw the film tonight.
I didn't like it. For me, what killed it is the overall approach of remaking ANH (with elements of TESB and ROTJ thrown in). It truly has most, if not all, of the same plot elements and story beats to the point it becomes embarrassing, very much like Abrams did in the last Star Trek film with Wrath of Khan.
Overall, I think it's an enjoyable action/adventure film done with humor and wit, with the best technical prowess Hollywood can offer. It has some nice classic SW elements that will probably make you feel very nostalgic, but overall the magic is really long gone, sorry. Nothing can replicate that genius spark from 1977. Better accept it and move on.
