DarthDementous reacted to Ray Barnsbury in The 2nd OFFICIAL Indy IV Score Thread
Well, I just finished listening and overall I think it's pretty great. There are some slower moments, but there are a lot of amazing, "Williams magic" parts that I wasn't expecting. The newly arranged end of the credits had me giddy, it's just what I was hoping for with the march and shows great inspiration on Williams' part (as opposed to all the rehash in RotS, for example). More thoughts to come later, though I will say that I think it's way too early to be ranking this as definitively better or worse the other scores. It takes time for something like this to sink into its place in the series, and no real judgments should be made anyhow until we hear it in the film.

what is everyone's favourite moments in the score?
I personally adore this part in Scrambling the Rebel Fleet:
I love this heroic treatment of Jyn's theme as it perfectly captures them marching off to war with a new-found inspiration (Jyn), and the overall tone is just so classic Star Wars, even with it being a new theme I could easily hear it being played during the lead-up to the Battle of Yavin or Battle of Endor.

People, people!
Let's remember that this is the internet - there is no modicum of respect or tact here, only the endless ramblings, musings and contrariness that anonymity brings.
That being said, I wouldn't change the internet (or this board) for anything - if I wanted civilized discussions I would talk to the boring rubes who surround me in my everyday life.

DarthDementous reacted to Incanus in The OFFICIAL Indy IV Score Thread
Even if the film is an homage of sorts to the film making style of Spielberg in the 80's, Williams' music should not be a carbon copy of that period's sound. And all three Indiana Jones films have their unique sound even if the style remains the same meaning that it is larger than life, fun, energetic and a bit over the top. Bad guys have dark dramatic chords for entrances, Indy's punches are followed by the orchestra with minute detail, traveling music is in the same way dramatic, love themes can be heard loud and clear as the hero kisses the leading lady. This is the style, the old style of Hollywood's Golden Age. The sound of all Indy films differs because Williams was in a different part of the decade and evolving as a composer all the time. So why shouldn't the new Indy score sound like the modern JW sound that works in the old Indiana Jones style?

Or perhaps it will sound like Williams' output of the past 10 years.
Some very good moments scattered thru out the score with the end credit suite probably being the hi-light with a new recording of the Raider's march and Marion's theme but in the end the listener realizes that Williams doesn't compose in the same style he did for the original films.

I for one I'm kinda glad how most things about this movie are being so well kept. Like Mikko said, it's like the days before the Internet. Everything about this Indy movie is nostalgi, even the soundtrack release.

Perhaps the slowness of the theme could depict a decrepit Indy The Geriatric's March!

Jay is pretty bad too! You can't do anything without him doing a search to see whether you're being consistent and then rubbing your nose in it if he catches you.

That would be a really lame plot idea. I generally dislike "memory loss" stories. They are a cheap soap opera story vehicle.

Damned if they did and if they didn't.

The line is self-referential and in a revering way which makes it swollen (made worse by J.J.''s bloated registration of the moment) but somehow Ford managed to limit the damage. A weaker persona/actor would have made the room laugh (just imagine if they ask Leia that question). What can I say, it's not my kinda Star Wars. My Han Solo would have never said that line. You can't teach an old dog new tricks. He's the counterweight that's necessary to prevent things from becoming self-important. I guess the movie is giving that task to other characters now (Finn).

I thought Ford probably gave the best performance of anybody, truly recreating the Han Solo I knew, but, yeah, that whole scene from the writing to the acting felt off.

Please do!

It's fun. Shits all over Giacchino's, but that doesn't sound too hard.

I've been listening to Don Davis' JP3 score lately and I'm surprised I don't hear more positive things about it on this forum. Its a pretty convincing JW imitation without sounding pastiche or off-kilter. Davis reuses a few motifs like the JP main theme and the carnivore motif and they sound appropriate, not rushed or out of place. Don Davis clearly put his JW hat on to write this score. Overall, the music is not amazing but I do find the fact that Don Davis so seamlessly worked in JW's musical language (without achieving the same heights) pretty remarkable.
Here's one example of the action music:

Anybody else joining me on going "full media blackout" with Episode VIII marketing?
It's obviously impossible not to see some images, like what appears on website front pages and magazine covers, but I'm not going to watch any of the trailers or read interviews or anything like that. I will look at posters, which I still think are the coolest way to market a movie if done right.

DarthDementous reacted to Not Mr. Big in The Force Awakens - Complete Score Breakdown & Chronological Order (Film Spoilers Allowed)
I wonder if the alternate Jedi Steps ending at 3:50 was Williams. This suite does take some liberties with the material but that particular moment just sounds right to me.

I saw the film before I heard the soundtrack and while I couldn't make it all out, I definitely noticed those familiar Vader "intervals" even through the sound effects.

That is one of my favorite moments in the whole score. I sounds like the Moog that John Barry used to use. (He used it on the Black Hole and I think The Persuaders.) The whole track has a bit of a Barry feel, to me.
OK, I’ve read this “The Hope Theme is The Imperial March in disguise” BS several times. It’s pissing me off.
The track title is “Hope”. It is not the Hope Theme, right?. The track “Jyn Erso & Hope Suite” has the Hope Theme. That’s what plays over the titles of the movie, isn't it? It’s only used twice (three times?) in the whole film. The title, and when Jyn is giving her Rousing Speech. Oh, and somewhere in The Big Battle at the end.
Yes, Hope starts out with a variation of The Imperial March. It’s what’s playing over Vader taking apart the Rebels. What did they expect to play? It's the last four notes of the End Titles of The Empire Strikes Back which is The Imperial March. Then when the Blockade Runner takes off and leaves Vader standing in fury and (momentary) defeat there is a much more straightforward statement of the March. Then they play the beginning of Imperial Attack from Star Wars and we all go nuts.
I mean... WE all knew this right?

I've gotten to the point where I actually love it. It's still a mile beneath the Williams scores, but you can take an awfully big step down from those and still have a very good score; and that's what I'd say is the case with this one.
Bring him back for the Han and Lando movie!

By the way, @Stefancos, you and @Fennel Ka seem to have the same (hilarious!) avatar.
Who stole it from whom?
No idea, but I kind of liked it too. Definitely wasn't bothered by it like a lot of people!
