  1. I've already booked my flight ticket from Milan to Washington DC ;-) Hm, the Imperial March signed by Stéphane Denève? I think I'll just go for the cocktail reception... I think John Williams is too modest to attend such a show without feeling embarrassed.
  2. Lenny never knew too much about jazz. His references to jazz were sometimes a bit academic and stiff. - John Williams Does this explain why Jump in track 7 was arranged to sound like the Modal Nodes? From 2:29 onwards:
  3. Any take on John's liner notes in this thread?
  4. The black Berlin vinyl design still features the Musikvereinssaal Wien.
  5. RM: Nice meeting you, Maestro Morricone. I really enjoyed all these Italo-Westerns.
  6. RM: You quit La Scala when I'm not invited to the 40th Anniversary of the Filarmonica in 2022. JW: Riccardo, I can't do that. RM: Allora, then it is up to you.
  7. At that time (January 2020) more likely to read: RM: The Corona virus is a problem of the Chinaman. We Italians are immune because we were raised on olive oil and Amarone. JW: In LA, no one ever seems to be really concerned about public health issues, not even in Chinatown. RM: Si, Obama-care, etc., etc.... So may I invite you to Chicago? JW: That would indeed be a great honour and pleasure to stand once again in front of what is possibly the greatest orchestra in Northern America. You know, Steven and I did Lincoln there, a couple of years ago. RM: But I have one condition...
  8. Here are some suggestions...celebrity gossip, I suppose: Latest: The Muti shitstorm continues - Slipped DiscSlipped Disc | The inside track on classical music and related cultures, by Norman Lebrecht (slippedisc.com) We know that JW attended Verdi's Requiem played by the CSO under Muti in Vienna just before his own debut with the VPO (see above photo).
  9. I hope this isn't causally linked to La Scala and the two Riccardos. Riccardo Muti faces ban for life at La Scala - Slipped DiscSlipped Disc | The inside track on classical music and related cultures, by Norman Lebrecht (slippedisc.com)
  10. Just catching up on this West Side Story thingy. Has it already been noted that music consultant and Hollywood legend JW has written the liner notes for the CD/vinyl release?
  11. Like with Vienna, not a single second "wasted" on atmospheric scenes, e.g. JW's first entry, sequences from rehearsals, some shots of Berlin Phil during these nice autumnal days. There are so many possibilities with drones etc.
  12. Streaming here: John Williams dirigiert John Williams | rbb (rbb-online.de) without E.T., Nimbus 2000, Superman, CEOTTK, Princess Leia...
  13. Confirmed: JP timp flub repaired. Source: rbb broadcast just now. A Heliodor Production...
  14. And there is historical evidence for snobbery, i.e. VPO and BPO successfully avoiding to perform any kind of film music for decades - while Strauß and Lincke were taken seriously. Luckily, times have changed.
  15. And it can't be changed now anyway. And John Williams was happy with the orchestra as such and their excellent soloists, too. No one is able to prove that well-known stars are generally better than newcomers, because all stars were newcomers themselves when they were discovered. I think that flute player was exceptionally good. A flawless flautist.
  16. The woodwind section is undergoing quite a transformation. Some players are rather occupied with themselves. We just have to accept that they are busy and can't play on every occasion.
