  1. I encountered this nice little tune today. Co-written by Joe Williams.
  2. Ralph Vaughn Williams wrote nothing as good as The Planets, but he was still a better composer than Holst.
  3. This is a valid criticism. Perhaps the cropping up of this sort of thing in modern sequels it is reflective of how modern societies have lost a lot of their sense of meaning and purpose, so people look to myth, in this case the cinema of the 70s and 80s, and instinctively want those myths to be made more overarching in an obvious way. I have very mixed feelings on 2049. Can't help but feel it missed out on the most interesting and provoking possibilities of its story.
  4. Shore is not close enough to Hermann in talent to make this comparison, sorry to say.
  5. I don't think we ever had a thread with a concept like, I hope I'm not wrong. The idea for this thread is for information and discussion to be in one place, as some members have expressed their interest in approaching JWs concert work in a format like that.
  6. I was going to make a thread that would serve as an ultimate guide to all of JWs concert works where, in one big post, I would give piece details, recording details and the like. I have not been able to find the time to really sit down and do that, and the end result may be a bit overwhelming. So I decided to go for a different format instead, and do a chronological listening and discussion thread for all of John's concert pieces. Every few days in this thread, I will make an main post about one of JWs concert works, and the discussion will go from there as we all listen to the piece and share our impressions and any additional information y'all have. Of course, some pieces won't have any recordings that I can share here, or any recordings at all, but we can still discuss those pieces when we get to them. I will continuously edit this post to serve as a sort of glossary as we go along, with links to the individual discussions. I hope many of you will discover JWs rich body of concert work for the first time or gain a greater appreciation for it. We'll start properly on Monday. Prelude and Fugue (1965) Essay for Strings (1965) Symphony No. 1 (1966) Sinfonietta for Wind Ensemble (1968) Flute Concerto (1969) A Nostalgic Jazz Odyssey (1971) Violin Concerto No. 1 (1974-1976) Fanfare for a Festive Occasion(1980) Jubilee 350 Fanfare(1980) Pops On The March(1981) America, The Dream Goes On(1982) Esplanade Overture(1983) Olympic Fanfare and Theme(1984) (The Mission) (1985) Tuba Concerto (1985) Liberty Fanfare (1986) Celebration Fanfare (1986) & A Hymn To New England (1987) We're Looking Good! 7. Always is a lovely score, I think I'm gonna have to splurge on this one.
  8. You're not alone. It's just too much, too obviously trying to be a great film. The five best Bonds are, chronologically, From Russia With Love Thunderball (or Goldfinger, I can't decide) On Her Majesty's Secret Service The Spy Who Loved Me GoldenEye
  9. Hackman is utterly incredible in that. One of the great playing against type performances. And he was not even nominated for an Oscar. For shame.
  10. Just the one. Single ticket purchases opened at 10am. I had to wait in a queue for awhile before they let me choose and buy. The Saturday show seems to be filling up. I got a seat in section D, close enough to the stage.
  11. Is creating a three concert package the only way to get tickets for this, or will an individual option be available soon?
  12. Yeah, that's a significant weak point. But it is a well put together flick still.
  13. I think it is mostly because people don't care so much to venture beyond the big name scores for big name movies, movies they may not care for anyway.
  14. Tough, tough one. 1. Leaving Home 2. Remembrances 3. The Book Thief 4. Cadillac of the Skies 5. Love Theme from Superman
  15. Too many movies nowadays feel like this. I mean, you had stuff like that in the studio system, but I guess those were more inspired committees. No overall artistic focus as of late. A pity maybe in this case. The visual of Stone hamming it up as Cruella seems ripe with potential. The whole thing is rapidly being consigned to the meme pile.
  16. Hot take: none of the sequels really feel like Star Wars movies. TLJ is at least a well made movie. TFA starts promising but does not deliver. And TROS is a bad fanfiction given millions of dollars. The scores are all nice, though.
  17. This is a salty thread. To add some more salt: I've seen parts of Alien (will watch the whole thing at some point), all of Aliens, and parts of the 90s sequels. I'm sorry to say I have no real interest in watching anything that came after Aliens front to back. The franchise should have ended at Aliens, that's all the ending you need.
  18. I'm a contrarian who likes Magical Mystery Tour Abbey Road is a very close second.
  19. As I mentioned in the previous thread about this, I like to separate Williams's work into these periods: The Early Period: -1960 to 1974 The Heroic Period: 1975-1986 The Reflective Period: 1987-1993 The Experimental Period: 1994-2009 The Late Period: 2010- present
